Has anyone noticed how awful Triple J has gradually become over the last year or so? Admittedly, it hasn't been that great for a few years, but ever since King Richard has taken over as there main man, all you hear now is abstract dance music and backpacker rap. About the only thing good about Triple J now is the weekdaily aussie music show that pushes Australian Talent, but the rest is basically rubbish.

BRING BACK THE ROCK!

Get onto the Sound Lab. Its all abstract dance music :D

All I've noticed of this new direction is that there's an absolute ****load of Australian hip hop on there these days. Its funny as a novelty but I think its getting a bit tired now.

What do you mean not enough rock?
Rock is back! It's the new black!!!

BRMC, Strokes, Dandys, Vines, Rocket Science, Jet, Powderfinger are back and rocking it again!!!
In my eyes, Triple J is playing more rock than it has in the past five years where any novelty dance track would make its way onto high rotation. Not that dance music is bad, but they were playing some tripe.

Sadly, however, Triple J aint as good as it was when I first started listening to it in the early 90s. When I first started listening, Triple J didnt give a stuff if songs it was playing were heading to the charts. Now, it seems its important to find the next big thing in the charts -its something thats happened ever since Nirvana broke through.

The good thing about Triple J, is that I can listen to it in the country. I wouldn't still be living here if there was no Triple J - couldn't handle listening to the local FM station.

I still listen to JJJ and agree that it isn't as good as the early 90's when it first came to Adelaide.

But I think that is the point, JJJ is a YOUTH station. It is aimed at younger people.

JJJ still has some decent stuff of there, but it's natural not to like all of the same music that younger people like when you get a bit older.

I don't think JJJ has a 'new direction', it's on the same path it has always been.

Good call. I didn't mind 'Fridays' but enough's enough.

cant stand aussie hip-hop...

cant stand mel & charlie... their sh*t remotely funny??

It was sounding pretty tired long before Kingsmill took over. What he has tried to do is diversify. There are a lot more tracks added each week than what there were previously. He's adding 15 to 20 tracks some weeks and in the past it was 5 to 10. This means less repitition which I guess results in less familiarity in the short term but is surely going to make it more interesting in the long term. I think they are deliberately aiming to be more like 2JJ. The Sydney station they were before going national.

JJJ lost me as a listener

It's a youth station, and the programming is aimed at that market.

I just plain outgrew it.

Nova is now my station of choice.

Actually another thing I've noticed of late is that there are a lot more songs from back in the early 90s and 80s being palyed. Triple J seemed to forget abut older songs that werent on their hottest 100 compilations for a while there.
I heard Stone Temple Pilots' Interstate Love Song the other day and Buffalo Tom's Summer. it was cool.

Agree with a previous poster that JJJ have usually gone with more diversity than others. IMHO it's the hardest to listen to, but most fulfilling in the long run because you get to know a lot more music.

Though these days I tend to work myself into a nice comfortable rut with Triple M or something - Not as much work required on my part ;)

None of those bands highlighted know how to rock (except Dandies in one or two songs). Triple J is rubbish and I agree with your second paragraph.

I think that as of late, there has been a huge lack of speculation towards the Heavy Metal / Hard Rock industry. Some of the greatest music of all time is heard through these styles, but it seems to be somewhat ignored. And seeing as Hot FM won't go anywhere near the shouting vocals, or punishing guitar riffs, I am relying on JJJ to take over that role, but they don't seem to be making any changes.
I suppose that's why my radio hasn't been used for a few months.

BRING BACK THE ROCK!

Totally agreed. Triple J has lost the plot. I still listen to it though because in Adelaide there really isn't any alternatives that wont make me want to commit suicide.

Used to listen to Triple J non stop around 5 years ago. Some of the rarities Richard Kingsmill used to play on J Files made it well worth staying up till 1am chopping and changing blank tapes over trying to catch it all. Few of the Live at The Wireless sessions were well worth taping, still got a classic Fear Factory one from around 98ish?

Got all the radio stations pre set and rarely go as far as JJJ now it's full of hippy trancey type tunes. I'll blame Silverchair for ever making it onto the Fox!

You could say that about any music genre. Emphasis on "some of".

My sentiments exactly. Mel and Charlie are not funny, clever or remotely interesting.

The old JJJ could be listened to by young and older people alike. It had some cleverness about it that bridged age gaps. Now they mainly have un-funny, ****-for-brains presenters.

KJJ think Aussie hip-hop is the new youth-anthem source and are milking it for all it is worth, but apart from one or two really novelty songs none of it will make it big on commercial (or should I say, "profit making"? There is so little difference now.) radio. I stab blindly at the presets on my car radio when Australian crap-hop starts up.

I cringed years ago when Mike Robbins said "Anything good you hear on Triple J is picked up by commercial radio three months later." That signified the end. They reconised that they were trend-setters and chased that goal, ending up being just a test-market for profit-making radio.

They will no doubt claim victory when a couple of the vapid hip-hop novelty songs crack into profit-making stations but it will be a pyrrhic victory as they have laid waste to their own station just to get the attention of the big boys in the school yard.

I have to agree on the presenters. Until this thread started, I thought they were just crap, but now I realise that they've been recruited for the youth angle, which is why they're mostly patronising and don't even have the wit of Hey Hey Its Saturday.

I don't know how well that works - when I was a kid, I hated it when people put on their `Talking To Kids' voice, but Rosie seems to do this all the time. Bizarre.

Still, the music continues to **** on commercial radio.
