Off the top of my head! Probably missed a few out.
Eddie Mercx, Bolt and Flo Jo probably deserve a gig. Flo Jo's records are still standing, and she set them in the 80s (whether they were clean or not...)

He also played with bats skinny then his arms, on green as decks with long boundaries and long out fields, I think his average goes up not down
Era comparisons are difficult but his average during bodyline which is just a run of the mill tactic to players with a weakness to short pitched bowling these days was 56, rarely played on dustbowls, never faced a four prong bouncer barrage from a peak WI etc. I just highly doubt he averages near 99.

I’ve seen guys like Garry Sobers,Viv Richards, Barry Richards, Graeme Pollick at there best.
All those players would still be greats in today’s game.
Russ Ebert would be a top player in today’s AFL.
He would have easily been able to have the fitness level required.
I seen him play in a fun game when he was in his mid 40s and he still looked fit as a fiddle.
The ones with special talent will always be good enough no matter what era they’re from.

Of course they would all I'm saying is Bradman's average wouldn't be as superhuman, averaging 60 or slightly more would still have you well above Lara, Tendulkar, Ponting, Kohli, Smith etc. etc.

Get that and my wife's the same.

One thing I loved about The Wire (and like everyone else I watched it via Box Sets long after the last episode aired in the US) was the way it unintentionally documented the rapid transformation of telephony over the early 2000s from fixed phones/payphones, to pagers to mobiles/burners. All through the eyes of a street drug trafficking network- with most of the characters based on real life.

Had to watched it through a couple of times to 'get it' and then wanted more. Went looking for this old cop show made from 1993-1999 written by the same guys as The Wire and also set in Baltimore called Homicide: Life on the Street - found all the episodes in mostly SD quality on the ok.ru and dailymotion websites. Just like The Wire it rated poorly but was loved by critics for its script and acting.

And then Breaking Bad came along.
David Simon's book Homicide is also good. It's a shame he is the most annoying man in the world.

For those who can survive through to Christmas over this way, it should be quite pleasant...

I’m overseas at the moment, have been checking the weather occasionally back in Perth.
A couple of belters coming up but that’s summer in Perth.
I’d rather that than the shit humid Brisbane weather they’re getting for the cricket.

Just checked. He isn't on the list for our Christmas lunch and can't imagine any scenario I'd bump into him so all good.

Which reminds me. Flew return from Melbourne to LA in Qantas First for my first time just before covid. Was all excited who I might meet in the bars and in flight.

Turns out they were all boring fat fek nobodies like me. Who knew.

Have you tried the Port book written by the pedo?

Once you’ve been in first class it’s hard to go back to cattle class.
Only other way I find it ok is booking the extra legroom spots.
Exit row and Bulkhead, poor man’s first class.

Heh.

The missus' boss has/had a father with dementia who was up and down for some time before finally being put into palliative care about a week ago. He unfortunately passed away shortly after a few days ago.

What my missus didn't know until today was that he was one of a pair of identical twins. They both had dementia and were in the same home.

The night after the father twin died, the second one became very agitated and needed to be walked around the home repeating that his twin brother was "calling for him" and in the end he got tired and gave up and said I just want to go to bed. So off he goes to bed. Dies peacefully in his sleep.

Less than 24 hours apart. Spooky!

I would have Pele miles above Jordan honestly. Just my opinion.
On pure ability Pele (and Bradman) were better proponents of their sports. Jordan was the first world superstar though IMO. In the top handful, if not best, at a sport that was/is either followed or at least known about casually everywhere in the world. Soccer, it's only competition, is too fragmented, where as basketball has always been the best go to the NBA. Jordan hit his peak just as salaries ramped up to (the average person) crazy levels and players became mass marketed, including having the power to have control of their image and marketing. It ensured that even though others have since tried to repeat selling themselves as a global brand, Jordan was the first to do it. So outside any question of his sporting ability, he'll always be the first to truly market themselves on a global scale, that players of any sports before that couldn't dream of.

I think it's also when you talk greatest, that team sports, the best players can stand out that step further, if they are not just great players, but great leaders. MJ was a hard taskmaster, who trashed anyone who wasn't super serious, but he didn't expect anything more of others than he demanded of himself. The success he had at the Bulls vindicates that, even if some of his ex-teammates have a love/hate relationship with him for his pushing them that hard. Tennis stars, F1 drivers, swimmers etc. can be great, but it's just they've gotten the best out of themselves, not both themselves and others. That just doesn't seem (at least to me) as much as an achievement.

That's a good list, I would personally have Lindrum and Phelps closer to the top.

I also think Nadia Comăneci would be in there, as would Jim Thorpe.

Perhaps Zátopek too.

And as good as Stephen Williams was for us in the 1980s, I would probably go with Fos or Choco in his place ☺️

Not trying to be picky, but Dawn Fraser isn't even close to being on this list. Chamberlain either. No to Palmer too. Who is S Matthews? Which Erving are you referring to: Dr J?

The best sportsman ever debate is very much a personal thing and will go on ad infinitum.

Bradman's 99.94 ave was achieved in an era when the game was often played on suspect pitches with bats the size of tooth picks compared to what is available today, and with little to no protective gear particularly for the batsman's head, and is unlikely to ever be beaten so he will always be my number 1.

As a comparison too many players are now getting hit flush on the helmet or the grill, including at least one top order Indian player in this current series, so one can only wonder how they would have fared against the likes of Larwood or Voce on a bouncy pitch with nothing more than a cloth cap for protection.

My number 2 is Jordan, that video of his highlights where he takes off from outside the three point line with the ball in his right hand, puts it in his left and then back into his right before slam dunking it, all done in seconds while he was in mid air and parallel to the floor was breath taking stuff.

My number 3 is Pele, number 4 Ali, and 5 is Wayne Gretzky.
