Critical response has been positive with newcomer Hailee Steinfeld drawing much praise, Jeff Bridges work with the Coens again is good to see as well.

Whilst I admired some aspects of 'A Serious Man' it left me cold and I thought it was one of their lessor efforts. This looks to be a lot better and am looking forward to it.

Saw it when I was in the states last week. Simply incredible, the craft the Coens show through every scene is incredible. I sat there wanting the film never to end. These guys refuse to pull out a bad film. Can't wait for it to come out on Bluray.

9.0/10

im not the biggest coens fan

but its a top flick

bridges, damon and the young girl are simply brilliant

brolin has a great cameo as well

The orignal with John Wayne was outstanding in my view, "Feel your hands you son of a b*tch"...yep, love it...I hope the remake does it justice :thumbsu:
I thought it was pretty weak. The book is excellent and all signs point to a more faithful and better adaptation of it by the Coens.

was underwhelmed by it. Bridges & Damon were wooden and their forced accents were horrible. The young girls precociousness lacked humor. The best role in the movie was the bad guy, not the one they were chasing, but the Boss of the gang. He was very good.

overall 5.5/10

Bridges is brave knowing his performance will be compared to "the Duke''
Really.
Bridges is a better actor in every possible way. All I have seen is the shorts and can see his performance superior.

Wayne was a ham actor, and just his view's on the Native Americans makes him offscreen yank arsole number 1.

Wayne was not a good actor. He did his thing and he did it very well but he is no where near the calibre of actor that Bridges is.

EDIT- What sherrinorburley said

Wayne was, however, ideally suited to the role of Rooster Cogburn.

Sir Alec Guinness was an infinitely better actor than John Wayne, but i'm not interested in seeing him portray Rooster Cogburn.

It's a western, it isn't "The Merchant of Venice".

Bridges own it, so the point is moot.

Well I am. But I do agree that Rooster Cogburn was tailor made for John Wayne. I'm not sure what you're getting at with that last comment though. Some of the greatest movies of all time are westerns.

Hated the Coen's remake of the Ladykillers so a bit unsure about this one, especially considering this is probably my old boy's favourite film.

Still, will give it a crack when it's out.

That is a discussion for another time, but it is totally wrong.

Will watch this on blu-ray when it comes out. Being a massive Duke fan im skeptical but not closed-minded like some are being with this film (who rubbish it without even seeing it). And I do understand they are saying its more true to the book than a remake but you can't escape the comparisons.

Take the blinkers off the donkey-

That doesn't need a reply, it's self-evident.
You can't even get mad at it; it's so insane that there's just nothing to say about it.
He would be, according to his point of view, someone not disposed to returning any of the colonial possessions in Africa or Asia to their rightful owners. He would be sharing a perspective with Vorster if he were is South Africa. He would be on the side of Ian Smith.

He would have shot down Gandhi, called him a rabble rouser. The only freedom fighters he would recognize would be those who were fighting Communists; if they were fighting to get out from under colonial rule, he'd call them terrorists.

The Indians today he'd call agitators, terrorists, who knows? If John Wayne ran for President, he would get a great following ... I think he's been enormously instrumental in perpetuating this view of the Indian as a savage, ferocious, destructive force. He's made us believe things about the Indian that were never true and perpetuated the myth about how wonderful the frontiersmen were and how decent and honorable we all were.- On John Wayne's 1971 interview with Playboy magazine

John Wayne took roles Brando would not even consider ie The Conqueror, Waynes acting limitations exposed. The comparisons to the new True Grit compliment Wayne enormously.

Brilliant movie. Jeff Bridges was, as always, fantastic. Thought Matt Damon was really good too. Would've liked to see him with more of a role, but I suppose that's the way the book was written.

Hailee Steinfeld was brilliant as well. Incredibly performance for someone so young. And I really enjoyed Josh Brolins brief appearance, he never disappoints.
