Round 18. The last home and away game of a long season. No excuses though. The u19s were handed their behinds on a platter by Collegians at Brunswick St. Collegians were up and about. Sitting safely at 4th on the ladder, Collegians are the ‘form side’ of the competition and that is a direct quote from their website, so it must be true and after the thrashing they gave us, I completely agree.
The first quarter was all oneway traffic. Collegians were brash, loud and spectacular. We seemed to stem the flow slightly late in the first and into the second but the killer blow was the third where we did not score….at all. There was nowhere to hide anymore. We started with less players and were now two more down. Garcia’s hamstring did not pass the test. Thank goodness this wasn’t the final. Ryan also suffered an ankle. Collegians had full rotations through the midfield, their fresh legs were just killing us.
The final quarter saw some fight shown by the Roys, but that is expected, it is in the song – “in defeat, we always try”. That means something. There were some signs of life late in the game. A heartbeat. A pulse. These young Lions have been a joy to watch all year and nothing that happens from now on will change that. Nothing will take away from the great wins, the way they have stood up when needed. They deserve success in this finals series, they have earned it and it is there for them to take.
Next week we meet Werribee in the first final. Get around us, we need the strength of the Fitzroy faithful. Check the website for the venue and time (there appears to be some confusion about it tonight).
Congratulations to the Colts team at the FJFC on their heart stopping win in the Grand Final today!! Fantastic effort!!
