Fitzroy vs Marcellin
Marcellin beat Fitzroy in Round 6 and it stung. Everyone was off their game that day, from Coach to Team Manager and most people in between. This round 12 game was about redemption.
The team was suffering from the same issues as last week though – low numbers. There was a big call put out for help and fortunately two registered players who had chosen to not play this season, offered to help out so the team welcomed Dieter and Eddie back to the fold. That took our numbers to 20.
It was grey and drizzly at Ramsden St. Marcellin thought they saw a ray of light when Joe Hill emerged from the change room in the water carrier’s top but they were wrong.
It started evenly enough with only 8 points in it at half time. Fitzroy slightly frustrated again by Marcellin’s game plan of playing loose men in the back line. Despite instruction not to bomb it long into the forward line, the boys struggled a little early. The third quarter was different though. With 13 scoring shots to 1, even with inaccurate kicking, Fitzroy took the game well out of Marcellin’s grasp. The final margin at then end of the day was 45 points.
Mike Matters was all class again. It has been a similar story every week. His work rate is to be admired. He was the worthy recipient of the Provans Home Hardware Player of the Week ward. Luke Baker is simply too good, too often, He is smart and can make something from nothing. McCormack was fantastic. The fitness level he has attained thanks to the Cannons is a real asset, especially with low numbers. Ligris was great again and even better once he started following the coach’s instructions. Leech is amazing. His ruck work integral to the team’s success. He takes much of the physical work and his body is punished. Edwards was instrumental in the last term and his intercept and goal at the start of the third was the beginning of the end for Marcellin. Otto Ishak was valuable up forward kicking 3 goals. Fraser was good and did not engage in any wrestling this time around…well done! The new boys were great and we hope they enjoyed it…we may need them again next week.
Fitzroy is back at Ramo next week playing Parkdale, the other team to have beaten us this season. We should welcome back the captain, Daz but have suffered another ankle injury, losing Oscar. I propose opening a moon boot store somewhere near this team…want a share? It will be huge.
