When you drive through the Trinity Playing Field gates off Bulleen Rd, you are just gob smacked. In 16 rounds of football, we have not seen an oval in this condition – it was picture perfect. It looked like carpet, beautiful, lush green carpet. The change rooms were not too shabby either, a little on the dark side, you know, gloomy but nothing Trinity can’t alter when they next upgrade the facilities, just put in larger windows.
There was a bit of excitement for some pre-game when some Aussie sporting royalty was spotted in the car park in the form of John Aloisi – the man who scored the decisive penalty against Uruguay in 2006 to send the Socceroos to Germany. Legend!
Enough of these distractions though, the Roys were here to ensure the home final was theirs and to obliterate the memory of the “almost” loss to Mazenod. It may not be easy though. Old Trinity had started the season well but fallen into some sort of form slump. They are the only other side to beat Werribee, besides us. Watching them warm up, they looked big. Not big as in Werribee-big, but big nonetheless. This game could not be taken lightly, we had to make a statement.
By quarter time, the job was done. Of course, we didn’t know it at the time. We did not get complacent. That observation is purely hindsight. Fitzroy kicked 7. 3 45 to nothing in the first and Old Trinity never recovered. It was a seamless display and an even contribution across the team but, as it is in football, some players contributed more evenly than others! Kai Menzies was on fire from the first bounce and never dimmed. Joe Hill, despite some kind of hand problem was great. He added 4 more goals to his season haul and still leads the competition. Baker, the younger was back in the team and was very useful. (Playing him down a little for the sake of the team!!) The captain, Daz, was seriously finding form again. Dalts was sensational. He thoroughly enjoyed his time forward but, as is the lot of the “go-to” player, he had to move back to defence when McAdam injured his shoulder again. Best on ground though was Dylan Leech. All year Dylan has been outstanding, his skills and his physicality make him a crucial member of this side.
No mercy was shown. The boys relished the conditions and used the big ground to showcase their abilities running out 89 point winners. Home final all ours!!! Still, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Collegians, at home, next week. They will be looking for redemption after the night game when we beat them with 17 players. No shortage of revenge fodder for them! Our injury list grew again this week but maybe a couple could be ready to return.
Go Roys.
