That is such a shock. A true legend of the Port Adelaide Football Club.

9 premierships, 4 best and fairests, a Magarey Medal, a career that you couldn't even imagine.

Vale Geof Motley.

Thought he was invincible, this is such a shock.

9 Premierships as player and coach, a Magarey Medallist when it actually meant something.

One of the greatest people of the greatest club in the land, hard to say gone too soon when he was 88 but will always live on in our hearts.

There aren't many of the 1950s and 60s premiership players left. Even less who won a flag in both decades.

I was told a few months ago Geof was in a nursing home and couldn't talk anymore.

Born in 1935 was a contemporary of Barassi at state level footy who was born in 1936. Like Barassi, Geof was a fierce and successful competitor on the field and both played in lots of GFs and won many flags. Geof got 9 Ronald Dale 6.

They would have played against each other in pre season and post season gamea as Fos and Norm Smith had a great relationship and would regularly organise games between Port and Melbourne.

The fall out as chairman of selectors in 1977 or might have been 1976 was dramatic but Geof came back into the bosom of the club especially after Peter's serious accident. It was great to see him so involved in club events from 1996 onward after questioning Bruce Weber and the club''s push to enter the AFL in 1990.

Vale Geof Motley.

And with the passing of each of these legends, these stalwarts, the milquetoasts who now run our once great team continue to dilute that very essence that was Motley's, Ebert's, Elleway"s et al Port Adelaide.
Vale great man. You may be gone but many of us will remember you and the Port Adelaide you presented

Geof Motley was one of my favourite players from the Maggie's golden era, even though a wayward kick from him on a very wet day at Adelaide oval in the mid 1950's hit a 7 or 8 year old 1954 flush on the beak and knocked me over the back of the seat resulting in a very bloody nose.

I haven't had a mid week lunch at Alberton for about 5 years now, but I occasionally saw Geoff sitting on his own at one of those small tables on the eastern wall under the team photos, and I would have liked to have spoken to him but I didn't want to interrupt his lunch.

RIP Geof Motley you absolute champion!

Edit
I always thought he had 2 f's in his name, but that isn't correct and his given name was Geof.
Apparently Geof Motley and Warren Tredrea were 2nd cousins.

Sad to see the passing of another of the all time club greats. I remember him asking tough questions at the first emergency members meeting following he afl bid announcement in 1990. He was part of the culture of keeping people accountable that made our club so great, and his playing record of premiership excellence will never be matched.

I remember reading a story about Geof, that after playing a losing state game against Victoria at Adelaide Oval he was so angry he grabbed his gear and went straight to the car park to get his car and go home. He looked in the car and saw his car keys still in the ignition and the car locked up. It was one of those big old American numbers and he put his elbow to good use to smash the front window quarter vent, reach in and grab the keys, unlock the car and drive off.

Motley, born a drop punt from Alberton Oval, made his League debut with the club in 1953 after being promoted directly from the senior colts.

Motley holds the distinction of never being dropped after his League debut.

By the end of his playing career in 1966 Motley amassed 250 games, kicking 156 goals.

Motley holds the rare honour of being the only player to take part in all nine of the club's premierships during its golden era between 1954 and 1965.

Motley's contribution to football as a player and coach has seen him awarded life membership of both Port Adelaide and the SANFL.

He was named on a half-back flank in Port's 'Greatest Team of All Time' and is a member of the Australian Football Hall of Fame, the South Australian Football Hall of Fame and the Port Adelaide Football Club Hall of Fame.

Port Adelaide statement - Vale Geof Motley

After his retirement Motley said: “We played on the basis that we could not possibly let down the followers of the Port Adelaide Football Club - the greatest gift we could give them was a premiership.”
It's a common trait with the real Port men.

Gosh imagine letting that attitude wane.
