No doubt Harry Potter fans will be saddened to hear of his passing but for me, The Singing Detective was his greatest work.

Dennis Potter was a damned genius.

Oh this hurts, I was quite a fan. He’d retired from stage recently given ageing memory but still popped up in some films (saw him glorified cameo in Cordelia just the other day, which coincidentally appears his last screen credit). At his best he was formidable.

It was more of an autobiography of Potter and Gambon had the skill to pull it off to such an amazing level.

The show still rates up there with the best.
