I was just wondering whether anyone from here had been to Vietnam? I ask because next Summer I have the chance to go to Vietnam through some program (I forget the name) that's coming to my school. It sounds really exciting. Basically there is a group of 15 students (from years 9-11) and 2 teachers. The teachers are basically there to just follow you around, make sure you're OK etc. Us students have to do all of the work, organise everything, the itinery (sp?) food, accomodation etc. It goes for about a month, maybe abit more. There are 3 "stages" to the trip. 1)You get used to the weather, food etc. Go on afew little hikes, stuff like that. 2)You could do something like climb a moutain with your group, go rtecking in the forest for 5 nights where you sleep in hammocks and things like that and then 3)a "project" stage where you do something for one of the villages eg. teaching the kids English, conservation, maybe even build a hut or something for the village.
I thought it sounds really exciting. Will be going along to the infomation evening next week. What do you think? Have you ever been before? What was it like?

Being half-Viet, I've been there. Saigon predominantly. A very corrupted sh*thole that is. Oh, and the people are very superstitious it's not funny.

I went to Vietnam for 3 weeks in 1996.

It was absolutely spectacular and very cheap.

Started in Saigon for a couple of days, then did a tour down the Mekong for three days.

Then went by bus to Dalat. A nice town in the highlands, with a lot of French influence.

Then by bus to Na Trang and Da Nang. I get them mixed up, but one is a coastal town with a nice beach and the other has a great market (IIRC).

Then onto Hue, which has some nice ruins that were once the imperial city.

From there a train to Hanoi for a few days, which is a nice city and quite different to Saigon.

A day trip to Perfume Pagoda, which is great, and then a couple of days in Halong Bay, which is spectacular.

Overall a really enjoyable trip.

Organising everything is (was, I asume it is still the same) is amazingly easy. It is all set up for backpackers and you can organise everything through cafes once you get there.
