Ok, I have been hearing many pro's & con's regarding vista and am callling a plebicide on this issue.

I now have had Vista for almost a year and despite the best attempts at sabotage, I have had no real problems. Actually...remove "real".....I have had none whatsoever, no BSOD's, no security, no compatibility issues........nothing!!!!

I just would like to get some feedback from other Vista users to gauge whether I am simply experiencing a dream patch or am deluding myself??

I was told that Vista is a nightmare from a security point of view BUT I have run many test with IP port scanners both from within a LAN and also WAN's (such as Sheilds Up etc) and the system seems by all means "accountable" though I would hate to be quoted on that

An introspective of the new "demonic" O/S would be good from those who are currently using it,,Ploise!!!!!!!!

P.S. I have been road testing OS X leopard & Ubuntu linux.........verdict???
OS X very easy & accomodating to many PCirgins, Ubuntu, a great step forward, BUT still a long way to go (I guess they will never understand the concept of user friendlyness!)

Views Please??

Few bugs to iron out, but no real issues at the moment. I presume alot of the problems some people have been having will be ironed out in Service Pack 1. I've been it using it a for a while now and find it great.

Had it on 2 PCs for 12 months one older hardware, one newer. No problems at all other than HP's refusal to release a scanner driver & creatives refusal to release a decent sound card driver (eventually flipped them the bird and went to onboard)

Quite like it - prefer it to XP. Very stable, not sure what all the fuss is about really

Just on Ubuntu, I agree that it has a long way to go before it can really be an alternative for your average dumb punter, but I wouldn't say it is not user friendly and in some ways is easier than Windows. For example, most open source software can be installed by doing a simple search on the synaptic package manager and clicking install. Nothing like that on Windows as far as I know (I don't have Vista). My two year happily uses Ubuntu.

Aside from a few networking issues from time to time - I have no problems at all with Vista.

And on a side note - The DVD creation program in Ultimate is an excellent addition.

Poor mans OSX

I ran it for a few weeks, thought I should see what I'm bagging and it is shocking.
Slow (I was running it on bootcamp on a MBP, then macpro).

Bugs everywhere
Still have issues with Viruses & spyware.

likeI said poor mans OSX

I agree. Software developers hate it as well, and when software developers don't like an operating system you might as well jump. Everything I've been hearing is that XP would have been fine if they just ironed out it's issues instead of reinventing the wheel with Vista.

Lol - no chance anyone is seriously going to jump. The minnows in the OS world are not going to catch up any time soon.

Well, just over a year and I still can't blue screen (or is it green screen I've been told) Vista yet. I haven't even had it freeze on me yet :thumbsu:

To the Mac guys, is there a version of Leopard I can download and install on my PC (using naughty methods of course:eek:). I have downloaded a few versions from bitorrent but just keep getting errors particularly on bootup.

M$ are already hyping Windows 7 and intend to roll back all support for XP by this time next year - despite the fact that something like 60% of all PC users still, run XP.

Vista sucks, it's ME all over again

Yeah, search OSX86 on The Pirate Bay or something. It can be an absolute bitch to get working depending on your hardware, but it can be done.

Vista is not as good for gaming as XP is. On average you get lower frame rates, and if you have a nivida graphics card driver then you will most likely experience some pain.

In fact, I think Vista is a piece of shit. What does it offer you that XP doesn't? If you already have a copy of XP, why should I spend $120 odd on an OS that arguably doesn't perform as well as XP SP3? For the shiny new UI?

When people see "new", they instantly assume "better". The greatest suck-in for consumers. I have run both Vista and XP on my new system, so don't use the "but you need a decent rig to run Vista" line on me thanks... Vista is more buggy, slower and doesn't like certain drivers. Most of the recent problems stem from some graphic card issues. That said, if Vista runs well on your system without a hitch then more power to you... but the fact that a *lot* of people and businesses have experienced problems with it says a lot.

I'll stick to XP and wait for Windows 7.

As a gamer and PC enthusiast I have gone back to XP after 4 months with Vista Ultimate. XP with Service Pack 3 is absolutely rock solid. Vista would hang every so often or just chug along and not feel anywhere as sprightly as XP. For instance copying a simple file from a disk to disk would bring up a dialog and nice GUI but just take a too long to complete, too long for what it should take anyway. In my eyes it was a bloated, slow, system resource hog. And I'm running a FAST machine - talking Quad Core @ 3.6Ghz and SLI video cards.

Running XP, the system is awesome. It just works. Copying files is fast, explorer is intutive. Sure it lacks the flash and overhead of a fancy looking GUI, but a bit of tweaking and you can get everything Vista has in terms of eye candy and more. Not only that but my 3DMark06 score is almost 1000 points higher, making XP FAR better for games. Overall it just feels more responsive, stable and kicks arse for games. And as an enthusiast it suits me down the ground.

I'll never go back to Vista with my XP build running this well. I cant see one possible advantage it would give me.

just bought a lap top so have finally got to test out vista properly and haven't had any problems with it but i'm only a week into it so we'll see how it goes 6 months down the track.

a few problems getting used to some of the new features but that'll come quick enough.

But bit pattern, it's IT! It flys at a rate of knots and if they can improve something, then by all means do it.

Minwin sounds like it will make Vista kinda like a stripped down car. I am happy with it now, but if it can run even faster, then sweet.

Footnote; The intent of this thread was to gauge an opinion on Vista, not comparisons between OS's.

Yes I did mention OSX & Ubuntu in my original post but was asking for a view on each one on their own merit as I am relatively new to the latest versions.

If anyone wants to do a comparison, start your own thread titled perhaps, "Compare the OS's" or something like that ;)
