A couple of 9's...when this was posted on X, there were of course some derogatory comments, including - "Correction, a 9 and an 8 ball!"
I suggested it was time to move on and let Ben move on...
It's been 18 yrs ffs! Some people just can't let go, like when watching WC play Pies a few rounds ago, and the crowd booed Sheed everytime he got the ball - that was so funny - 6 years ago and a premiership and they're still seething! ((;
(arguably we're seething about Sheed for different reasons?)

I agree people should move on, but to be fair, it is only a few years since he was released from jail.

He was a great footy player, but a bit of a shit person on many levels for a long time. So typically not the kind of guy you want as a mentor.

Seeing him hanging out with the Reid and other young guys at the club, doesn’t actually fill me with excitement.

Benny has been putting in some hard yards getting his act together and love that the club are getting him around the club in some, even at a minimal capacity. You dont discard people because they have had a hard run at it.. even if it is self-inflicted.

As for mentor, this would be the likes of shuey etc to the younger mids.

Harley looks pretty buff in that pic with Cuz. Pretty amazing for a 19 uesr old to be in that condition. He must work hard at it.

Was thinking the same thing - either they've caught him mid-workout for the photo opportunity or he's been hitting the weights hard over his few weeks off. Or both.

If anything Cuz is the best person to speak to the dangers of hype and attention.
He's completely lived being 100% in the spotlight regardless if it's negative or positive.
Reid is a different person with a different group of people surrounding him but those dangers do still exist and having someone around who can say, mate this wasn't great for me probably be a bit careful isn't a bad thing.

The Ben Cousins today is not the same Ben Cousins of 5, 10 15 years ago. Giving people the chance to change and learn is important and just as important is to acknowledge when they are actually making that effort. He's getting that acknowledgement now, it doesn't erase anything he's done in the past but it does help to allow him to move on from it rather than forever dwell in it.

Sack Brockman too?

Unrelated but I hope we don’t go in the way of building Harls to be like a trac. At 18 he already has immense strength and natural will get stronger but I don’t want him to lose some of his pace and. Also building that tank is probably the main priority over anything really.

I like Harley but in the SOO side after 3 or 4 good games.

I don't think so.

“On June 26, it’s Victoria versus whoever, Harley Reid would be playing for Victoria, Nick Daicos would be playing for Victoria, Zak Butters would be playing for Victoria,” he told SEN.

“Tell me why we don’t have that in our game? It is a disgrace!"

Good to see that Garry has given up on Harley leaving West Coast.

Anyone got a source for this. Found on north board

"Ralph saying that Harley Reid’s management wants $2m for his 4th season from West Coast as compensation for unders for the first 3 for a single year extension.

Ralph also said Essendon will offer $18m over 10 years to his management."

First off Jon Ralph is shit stirring. He knows we can redraw his third year. So this whole 2 mill for Year 4 is a wash. In fact you could go 700k Year 3 and 1.3 mill Year 4.

Nothing changes from this news. Our stance shouldn't really change 1 year contract extention just to reward him with a redrawn third year is not an incentive. Just continue to give Harley time to think about future and no need to rush.

I'll say Harley Reid manager is smart.

That makes zero sense.

Either you extend, or you leave. Why would you extend for one year, then leave, when Essendon could just offer him the same amount in year 4?

Ralph full of shit as usual, it seems.

Because no other club can redraw his third year contract. That's our point of leverage.

But I agree Ralph is embezzling the story.

What's really going down IMO is Harley Management early in the year said they are ready to sign a year extention. But in return management wants his third redrawn. he redrawn contract leads to 2 mill because his third takes up 700k and 1.3 million in fourth.

And Ralph has spun the story to 2 million one year.

But I can't find the source anywhere on social media. Could be the norf board making shit up.

It was just on MWT. Absolutely nothing segment on Harley I disregarded it faster than Ralph could talk. Totally ignore it.

Yeah, I get that we're the only club. Who can redraw, I think, in Ralph's logic's that he'd just simply leave after year 3. He isn't going to pick bones over a few hundred K when he'll earn around $20mil over his career.

Anyways these are facts we know (nothing has changed)

1. Harley is happy to sign for a 1 year immediately (said Jon Ralph earlier in year)

2. We can deduce Harley manager wants a redrawn 3rd year contract in return (I mean who wouldn't)
3. We can deduce Wce hold leverage in that Harley can't have his third year redrawn anywhere else by another club
4. We can deduce Harley manager wants a year extention not Harley himself. Harley himself is still making his mind on his future at wce. Harley manager likely advised him to take a year as a redrawn third is free money. Harley wouldn't have agreed to a year extention yet if his manager didn't push that idea to him

5. Pyke/Wce want Harley to not rush and think about his future rather then rush to sign him for one year extention.
6. Wce want Harley to have a 3 year extention
7. A redrawn 3rd and 4th year is in total 2 million due to year 3 likely costing $700k and year 4 $1.3 million

This is never going to end for the rest of his career is it.

Good grief.
Nah speculation is going to end soon I don't see a Judd. Lol at all the wce nuffies who thought Harley would be Judd (obeanie).

I've said all along Harley will either leave after his 3 years is done or he's a wce for life. He doesn't give off the vibe he will leave when he's free agent and finish his career elsewhere.

He's a loyal one club player. Which I hope he picks wce to be that club.

Which is it mate?

When I typed that I knew it didn't make sense/made the second part redundant

The club he picks not necessarily assigned at the draft he's going to be loyal to. If he picks us he will stay loyal to wce.

What I said doesn't make much sense but just think is JHF loyal to port? He bleeds power

Let's get real here - he's not sitting there encouraging the boys to try a bit of methamphetamine and domestic violence, is he.

He's busted his backside having to prove his way into a lot of the flash roles he finds himself in today - labouring and doing other shit jobs just to get by after his prison days. I also know that he is an excellent father to his kids.

Not only does he bring ridiculous amounts of footy knowledge being the best player in the comp for a number of years, it is clear in his turnaround that he still has that work ethic he was always known for. The personal stuff aside - he was the absolute model trainer back in his day. 18 year old kids, particularly those in the spotlight like Harley with a lifetime of wealth and fame ahead of him, need to learn street smarts and how to make the right decisions on and off the field.

I feel he's exactly who you want around as a mentor, not just at a footy club.. he has a lot of priceless knowledge and wisdom that's only gained through living that life on both sides.
