I don't see why Harley wouldn't want to stay to carry the club on his back and get smashed and mauled by the opposition without umpire protection for the rest of his career. Give all that up to be a pinch hitting 4th or 5th mid in a permanent premiership contender playing in front of 90,000 every week?
There's one club that seem to be in perennial contention and they probably have a 35k average attendance and there's not a single club that averages even close to 90k.

Have a spell champion

So WCE, winner of four flags, a list of retired gun players, ex coaches and a current midfield coaching unit, along with Yeo, is not enough guidance and support for Harley?
Apparently Harley needs Dusty to ring him up once a week and guide him (this from vic media). Why Dusty? Because he does the fend off? Because he's Victorian?
Such parochial flogs.

Plus got in a couple of 2 time premiership players this off season who apparently are all about leadership and setting standards…….

Wouldnt mind getting Cripps across for a few years if Carlton really stuff up this year but not just to be a mentor to Reid lmao

We have mentors, just because they dont have the Vic fame doesnt mean they arent good mentors

Hodgey isn't the only person who questions west coasts leadership at the club.

It's been a constant focus for fans since basically Hurn and Kennedy left. Even we have questioned club leadership on this board.

Last year Harley had Yeo, and played far better with him in the team. This year the only guys that have shown any leadership is Baker and Graham, given Yeo is injured. Thank god we brought them across.

It is true that there's a lack of strong, credible leaders at the club, particularly on the field.

I'm sure Hurn, Taylor, and Shuey are good mentors, but it's game day leadership we lack, particularly with Yeo out

We have Duggan who's a good on field leader but form was poor on the weekend
Then there Oscar who's a great player but shit on field leader
Yeo's injured Waterman's injured
Next best is Reuben, who is our best trainer maybe rubes needs to get closer to Harley and bring him
along

To be honest, Yeo was a perfect leader. The above list shows why it has been so important to bring Baker and Graham. One of our captains would probably not make the team in a top 8 side based on current form the last 12 months, and the other is out of contract, and holding the club over a barrel to get more years on his deal ie. prioritising himself over the team.

I'd also add that Jake's really improved his leadership. He's been great in the pre-season and also this week.

Think a lot of people on this board underestimate how elite a lot of GC’s mids are.
They're so elite they never won a game away from home last year and haven't made finals....ever...and lost to us last year...
Scary stuff

Glen Jakovich said the same thing on 6PR last night; nobody at the Eagles challenged Harley about his reactionary issues last year./ They were too afraid to upset him in case he decided to leave.

If true, that is not good for Harley's development or for our club. If true, what a weak, pathetic club we have become.

I don't know why Cripps is on that list.

For years we talked about blues lack of defensive intent and poor standards. That's the reason they burnt through 4-5 coaches. Cripps was there, and captain for a fair chunk of that time.

Cripps has not shown his ability to set standards or lead a club out of being a rabble.

Last I checked he was the captain when they shat the bed last Thursday.

I dont think its entirely because Cripps isn't any good as a leader, theyve recruited slow players for years, and they have a very top heavy list with no depth.
The bottom 10 players named the other day would struggle to get games even on ours or Richmonds lists.

Even from a coaching standpoint while it hadn't been great they just have a very awkward list profile imo.

Yes, this is my point.

When Carlton were in a similar position to us in 2018, it's not like Cripps had the boys buying in in 2019-2020. There was negative vision of Carlton players every week not buying in defensively etc etc etc.

Yes he did have a good relationship with Walsh, but Walsh is a self starter and didn't really need Cripps. And if you recall, it was people talking about how Walsh was setting standards in his first year etc etc, despite the fact that Cripps was captain.

I just think Cripps' leadership gets well overblown.

He leads by example, he individually performs basically every week and like Hodgey says in that clip he has that aura.

Even if he brought nothing than an example for Harley, Hewett, Hall, gross, etc to follow thatd still be a win.
For young vic players, having Cripps to follow around vs Yeo who theyve never heard of growing up as hes been injured most of their teenage years, there would be a difference there imo.

Ideal player to help younger players and H.Reid would have been Matty Priddis, the king of the contested footy....
Not stirring the pot so don't retaliate .
Would have be the perfect proctector .
For some reason Karl interview Priddis before the game on Sunday.

Dude still looks in ripping shape.

It's was year 1. He had 100 things to improve on you don't drop 100 mistakes on him and expect him to fix all 100 in first year. It's spaced out for a reason

He's got a development plan year on year.

It's being addressed in year 2.

Who cares what 'Hodgey' thinks??
You mean Hodgey - ' I heard from someone in the eagles camp there's not enough leadership' ..wow, really.
There's an entire club that has been rebuilding and replacing with presumably better staff and they can't find anyone apart from Yeo to mentor and guide him? Waterman said he spoke briefly to him onfield about focusing on the ball. Everyone's got each others backs, there are other experienced players apart from the captains and Graham and Baker. Harley has to learn himself to be responsible for himself and his actions. He has a coach, a midfield coach and counsellors etc, a whole raft of options to call on.
He and Yeo have a certain synergy but Harley's a big boy, he can play without Yeo for a few weeks. He might even take ownership.
It's one game in...a storm in a teacup...relax, there'll be new dramas next week, and the week after. In fact there'll never-ending dramas all season, especially if you tune into the footy media..
