I wonder if we all sound exactly like the Norf board did with JHF back in 2021...

Like his temperament, seems like a really relaxed, really confident kid.

But now that he's on board I hope everyone, club management included, take a giant chill pill, dial back the expectations and give him time to find his feet.

He's not going to turn the club around on day 1, he's very unlikely to start racking up multiple BOGs this year, he's probably not going to be a guaranteed best 22 player this year. Hes not a natural endurance athlete and the stuff that looks most impressive about his game, his core strength, and contested ability in packs are way way harder to do against fully grown footballers with multiple AFL preseasons under their belt than against juniors. There's also a huge number of uncertainties- whether his body can stand up to that style of play week in week out, whether he can still get effective kicks off under pressure in a faster league, how he handles being isolated from his family etc etc etc. Being pick 1 doesn't automatically make you win the rising star medal or say anything conclusive about how quickly you'll adapt to the AFL environment compared to other top 10 picks. You look at this year- one of the reasons Sheezel won the rising star medal is because the thing that his game are built around, ie elite foot skills, great endurance and footy IQ, are things that a 19yo can immediately use to have an impact. I dunno if that's Reid, I doubt we will actually see him looking like he did in the juniors until he has had several preseasons under his belt.

So great, we got him, now I hope the club's puts up some media walls around him, make sure he has good coaches and mentors and not trot him out to flog memberships or pump up our chances of turning it around next year, because the hype and attention will quickly turn brutal if he doesn't perform to expectations from day dot. You look at the way Melbourne completely destroyed Jack Watts by marketing him as the club's saviour from the day he was drafted, West Coast don't have to do that given their financial position and its probably going to be better for his development if we don't.

Protect him from the media, work on his game, hose down short term expectations and let him make his own way as a footballer.

Can’t like this post enough

The media scrum when he arrives in Perth is going to be embarrassing along with what I suspect will be a few hundred over eager supporters waving welcome signs

It’ll be a cringe fest

The sooner the club can get past that initial euphoria and let Reid settle in to what he needs to do as an AFL footballer the better

Let's hope The West give him a bit more breathing room than Luke Jackson was afforded 😬

The club is going way over the top. Free 9s when you buy a jumper, pushing memberships across both AFL and AFLW (BE LIKE HARLEY AND JOIN US!), the memes. Wild.

Wish they’d give it a break now.
Though, on the flip side, we'd all be on here complaining we the club hadn't put out content on our latest draftees, especially one as hyped as Harley.

I can see the complaints now...
"Club can't even put out game highlights, not even a post acknowledging we drafted them, Pathetic"
"Every other club can post things about their kids within 24hrs but our club is garbage, fold the club"
etc...

While I agree i hope Harley gets space to learn and play without too much internal noise I'm not going to complain that the club is finally giving us content and player access that we'd usually be crying that we don't get.

See you at training Monday? Might have to park at the Casino and catch the train. Won't be a parking spot within 5kms of Lathlain.

Yeah, it’s not advertised as an open session which will keep a few away but still expect there’ll be a crowd

Wednesday is an open session so it’ll be packed. Might stay away

There’s a middle ground. Happy with the memes and video content etc. But using it to advertise memberships is Norf territory

So true, Ginbey looked like he was going to tear things up then he got sore and came right back to the pack.

They are kids.

That is getting to the point where the football department needs to step up and pull the idiots at the club promoting this into line.

Its not smart for a bunch of reasons. He's 18, he's been dealing with hype all year, and it has the potential to create friction between him and teammates not getting the recognition. And the more hype they build the more pressure he is going to be under, the more unrealistic expectations are going to be that he'll immediately perform- and the nastier the media are going to turn if it gets ugly.

Promoting the club off a guy who hasn't played a game yet is something penniless clubs desperate for members do. It has every chance of blowing up in our faces and its all the more frustrating because west coast aren't remotely in a financial position where we need to be doing it. There's just no ****ing need for us to be doing this. Let him play first.

I'm trying to imagine Malthouse or Worsfold's reaction if the club did this with a draftee during their time before he'd even played.
