List Mgmt. Welcome Harley Reid (Pick 1, 2023 National Draft)

McKercher was very highly rated pre-draft. He has had two or three games getting 30 touches in a bad north team. He is certainly not as good as Reid but the combined output of McKercher and Duursma has been above Reid alone.
Reid's averaging 3 less touches then the defender Mckercher and has kicked 1 more goal (7) then the forward Zane "The Bust" Duursma.

Reid's output so far has those two covered by a mile even with the slow start to the season.

Seriously?
Not even close.

Pretty sure Duursma has been dropped already.
McKercher has been pretty good.
It's a lot easier getting cheapies on a half back flank though.

A lot has been made about North winning that game against Gold Coast costing them a Harley

What has been forgotten is the AFL handed them the keys to unlock Reid but they chose to keep picks 2 and 3

We’d likely have done that deal but they didn’t put it in the table

Dumb. Just dumb. Saved us from ourselves
100% this and also going back last year how frustrating it was to see us beat the Bulldogs the week before after being last on the ladder all season. We almost screwed up Reid pick by that alone. Lucky Kangas saved us and won the week after.

Lucky Kangas saved us and won the week after not to mention the urgent need for a contested midfielder

Having a few hours to reflect on this, I was one of those that wasn't unhappy with the Dogs win, and also that if North offered us 2 and 3 that we should take it. Fortunately their best offer wasn't even close and I was onboard with about 99% of the board who laughed off the offers of say pick 3, 16, 17 and trash.

1 - The Dogs win last year did help instil a good winning culture in the team and I like to think I was consistent in my belief that I'd rather we don't tank and if we finished last on merit to earn pick 1, so be it. A tanking culture is worse than a winning culture (look at Melbourne and Carlton as recent examples of that). In the end, I am glad of course we finished last on merit and that we didn't tank, and Reid joined a club that wanted to win, from the CEO and coach down to the bootstudder instead of whatever they have at the Arden St tinpot club.
2 - Even if North decided to do the trade (gave us McKercher, Duursma and another pick or so in exchange for Reid), there is no guarantee Reid would be performing like this or that McKercher and Duursma would be the same - look at how much Reid is enjoying playing in front of big parochial crowds and surrounded by premiership players to mentor him
3 - And of course, I will happily admit I got it wrong when I wasn't sure that we should reject any offer for pick 1 because in the end it's just one player and we need many players to contend again and it's better to not have all your eggs in one basket, but Jesus f*** what an egg this one is. Someone on the main board said he was basically the best of Fyfe, Dusty, Danger and Judd without their weaknesses and at 19 it's scary to think he still has improvement left in him

For the first time since trade/draft time i visited the North board. Oh my. The copium is strong. They are repeating some lines like mantras. If they say them enough it will be true!

1. Tanking is illegal so they couldn't tank against GC. (forgetting that sending players to have surgery/rest/trying in different positions gets the job done, without being tanking. It's basically what GC did).
2. McKercher and Duursma will be good so winning was better (forgetting they could have had 1 and 2 if the McKay compo remained).
3. Winning instils a good culture (as they get thrahed each game this year).
4. McKercher and Duursma will be good and not worth trading for pick 1 anyway.
5. Wardlaw!

Now to be fair there are some who have seen the light and are mumbling about instilling a winning culture by winning only works if you know there's noticebale improvement this year which hasn't happened.

The 10 fans north have will enjoy life much more when they are folded as a club and they can pick another club to support.

Eh I don't see the joy in rubbing it in the face of North fans. They haven't done us wrong. We got who we got, that's enough for me.
Are these the same north fans who told us that 3, 17 and 18 were fair and we’d be foolish not to take it as Harley would leave us anyway?

4. McKercher and Duursma will be good and not worth trading for pick 1 anyway.
Isn't the point (regarding the last round) that if they had lost they would've had Reid + McKercher.
So really the difference between Reid and Duursma is the question at hand in this scenario, as they would've taken McKercher regardless.

Lots of new Harley's coming through - they just wanna see Harley "where's Harley?"

Would have absolutely made those kids week.

It's the little things like that which I hope these players don't take for granted how big an impact they can have on those kids. They'll be telling everyone one of their friends about it at school today.

There it is again, that term used in a Harley narrative (from MP) -

'Harley Reid has come into the AFL with a huge reputation, but it has been his character, his ability to absorb the heat, and his incredible hunger for the contest that has established him, and his Eagles as must-watch TV in the 2024 AFL season...'

There would be commentators and journalists right now tearing our list management team apart had we proceeded with a trade like that last year.

It's the same core element that are the campaigners. We know who they are. One has been banned about a dozen times from BigFooty.

The majority of North fans know what's what. That trade was never going to happen.
