Or picked up. One of those rare, rare players who you can say both for
For a bloke picked in the 50s nelson played 8 seasons and almost 100 games during dominant period for the club .

100% a win and successful draft pick

He played 10 games for 8 wins in 2018 so he helped us win the flag too.

Emergency for both grand finals iirc.

There are four emergencies for the big dance mind you.

Just as good (damning with faint praise perhaps) as Duggan or Cole IMO. Certainly better than spuddy Rothdawg.

That broken arm vs hawthorn was the sliding door moment for him I think. Both his best career game and a momentum stopper that he never managed to regroup from.

Nah, it was the decision to go to Hip E club during Covid that really did him in.

This is what did him in and he was the example but his career had already stalled and was falling away. At his best I still think he was a better, more useful team player than Cole.

History and the club will remember Cole as a premiership player and a great club man but before Nelson started to fall away I think he was a better player than Cole. He had more ability up the ground, was being groomed as a midfield tagger to replace Hutch (which I think he could have been great at) and could still go back to defence.

His kicking wasn't as reliable and he had a penchant to pick off more than he could chew (which players generally tone back as they get more certain in the game) and he wasn't as much of a team man as Cole.

Mind you in the 18 grand final I think if Nelson plays and Cole doesn't we probably lose. Cole covered for Jetts injuries his calf from about 5 or so minutes into the first quarter. As a supporter you will always take the premiership, the above is just how I saw them as players and their peak ability as well as a little bit around the club.

Interesting takes on Nelson. I think most of us saw a dour/niggly lockdown player without any attacking instinct, who couldn't keep his arms free in a tackle and was susceptible to being caught holding the ball, and who was prone to poor decisions and execution.

And while he was never going to be a world beater, I'd say Cole's career has been far more impacted by injury.

Was a bit tongue in cheek that, agree. Was a real effort guy and I know fans loved that as per McGinnity. Not the best disposal but stingy lockdown team guy ✌🏻

Cole is the far superior player . Pace , defending and kicking all a much better level than Nelson.

Nelson still a better player than both rotham and witherden

McGinnity. My word I can't believe it's been almost ten years since he was on the Eagles list. He was actually good in 2011 but he and Masten had to try and replace Nico and Lecca in 2012.

2012 is a massive "what if" year and still burns that we didn't make it to top 4 (I lost $100 to my Dockers supporting mate on a bet over it too). Sydney was a super weak team (forwardline KPF of Reid and Goodes) and we could have been right up there if we didn't lose our top 3 goal scorers (Lecca, Nico and JK injured for large periods). Imagine how good another Syd vs Eagles GF would have been?

What I'll remember most about Nelson is that he looked like a baby bird, falling over, and getting wrapped up in millions of tackles and shaking his body pretending he's trying to dispose of the ball
