Sources confirmed the Hawks would pay about $500,000 of O’Meara’s salary next year and about $250,000 of Mitchell’s.

WOW if true, the Hawks seem to have traded their way to next years #1 draft pick.

And a piece of kitchen equipment for the trophy cabinet

The JOM trade looks better every day. 500k is awesome, that's 500k we can set aside to help keep a young player or bring in one more gun
Works in well with 2023 being the last year for Fyfe's existing contract, as his next contract he will be getting a substantial pay cut.

Either way it's a great result even it it just comes to the bottom line of the club but unless they spend that $500k on someone for next season it doesn't help in retaining anyone.

It doesn't help attract anyone, too late for that as the trading period is done and by the time we can attract someone next year the Hawks have completed the obligation.

Basically we just get a high grade asset at a heavy discount for 2023.

With the way you can move salary around, it can affect future years. The Jackson contract you can pay an extra 500k this year if we want and add space down the track. The per year amount is less meaningful than the total remuneration these days.

Use it on Serong, we need his extension now.
Under no circumstances should we want him to leave. If he did though, we could probably still make it work with what we have. I wonder why he is waiting to sign. No one should be concerned quite yet as he did buy the house in East Fremantle. We should start panicking in March?

That's true of contracts but not of cash. The only way Hawthorn's money affects anything in terms of another player is if we spend it next year.

Jackson's contract is done so unless we re-structure it it won't impact that. He's already here and that was all agreed before JOM landed so it didn't help us attract him.

The only way we can say the Hawks money helped us with a contract is if we bring some money forward on a deal we do with one of our guys that includes next year in the extension. This is certainly possible. So yeah, we can front load a Caleb extension with the $500k they give us but it still has to fit under the salary cap.

I have no doubt in every contract there’s a clause that allows the club to approach the player (and their mgmt.) to engage in bring forward payments for future years

The club would simply declare they have money in the cap now and want to get ahead to free up future monies

Obviously both parties need to agree, but the net result is the same. If anything, the player might be half smart and bank it, take the paltry interest rates we are getting

I heard that Sam likes to play with others “property”.

It's a very good question and I don't know the answer other than to guess that they've committed to a deep rebuild.

Is there still a salary cap minimum? If you look at their wooden spoon quality list, it is very hard to see how they can actually meet a minimum unless they are paying Sicily millions per year or something stupid like that.

Even if they rework contracts for many players to move future years into next year, it would be a huge amount of shuffling and ridiculous front ending of contracts and so forth. If they take any half decent young player and pay them all their money now, some chance they then lose a few with the old Colin Young trick of moving clubs when the low paying years kick in.

I’ve always assumed they would re negotiate deals - like Luke Ryan for example they would bump up 2023 even though he was technically already contracted. Pay him more in 2023 and maybe 2024 then a couple of lower years with the final year back at pretty good money to avoid the Lobb / BHill effect
