Dawson across half back as Hodge would do at times is fine. Direct traffic, control the game.

Trouble was that when he played defence for us we allowed his man to drag him to the last line of defence and out of the play, as far away from being able to launch attacks as possible.

A coach with any semblance of a clue changes things. For now he has to stay midfield though
It was only because we allowed it to happen. Good coaching would mean switching so he never ends up there. Hell, he should be able to do it on field. We have enough flexibility in talls/smalls in defence for him to never have to end up at full back.

When the other team has a run on, it makes sense to move Dawson back to settle things... but he should be mainly used in the midfield.

Is he actually best 22 and in the midfield mix when we have a fully fit list?

Does he come off the bench, play forward, or is he legitimately one of our first choice midfielders now along with soligo and rankine?
I would be surprised if any of the players traded in are seen internally as depth at this point.

I would have our primarly mids as: Dawson, Rankine (70/30), Soligo, Peatling, Laird. That leaves only two spots in the 22 for ABN, Curtin, Pedlar and pick 4 to fight over. Whoever makes up those positions will rotate through the midfield too depending on which players make the side. Maybe Rachelle too if Curtin and pick 4 don't play.

Laird over Crouch?

I would. Laird wasn't at his best in 2024 and maybe won't be again, but he is still a better player than Crouch in my opinion.
Yet Crouch made an AA as a midfielder admitedly some time ago and Laird hasn't come close as a mid?

You'd sooner Laird distributing and kicking the ball in the midfield ?

I wouldn't.

Not sure anyone could make an argument for laird currently being a better player than crouch.

Crouch brings other players into the game better imo, particularly if we have quicker types around him.

For us, not them and that’s why it hasn’t happened. They give us their F3 and it’s a deal
Using the draft points index and assuming next years' finishes are the same (both flawed), their F3 would value Peatling at pick 20 whereas F2 is pick 31. Given he's out of contract, can walk to PSD, nominated us, sub 7 times, etc. I think the F2 is reasonable.

They are probably hoping we finish bottom 4 again and they finish top 4. Hopefully we can finish top 8 and we have essentially got peatling for 46. Great deal for us if that happens
You can see why they don’t like it, all the risk is on them.

I reckon you used to thumbs down a lot of my 'Laird isn't an elite midfielder' posts two years back.

Ha that's possible, but then again I give almost all your posts a thumbs down or a hearts emoji.

Let's face it you don't like me and the feelings mutal.

I don't dislike you, I see your 'pro scout' persona more as a court fool role. Good for a laugh every now and then. Shake your fist at him when he stumbles into the waiting staff. Nothing to hold any real animus over.

For instance, what sort of serious person would admit that they disagree with opinions based upon who's expressing them, rather than whether or not they're correct. :tearsofjoy:
