Other SANFL watchers, where do you recall Welsh being played this Year? I definitely recall him up on the wing a fair bit. He was also definite deep forward at times. Reckon he was half forward sometimes to. No mid, no defense. Wing was surprising but he did well there from what I can remember.

If he was still managing his back issues from last year, that would have impacted his ability to train and recover etc which would contribute to his lack of conditioning.

Back issues especially in young people can take ages to recover from and are tricky to manage.

I would be surprised if money is an incentive. He lives at home and the club will reward him quickly if he starts performing.
Moneys an incentive for most people. Even the rich

Nah. He was deeper forward. Came up to the wing on the odd occasion. I’d be interested in his TOG stat for the sanfl. I reckon it was pretty low for a sanfl player

I also recall him on the wing a fair bit. He is a natural 3rd tall in my opinion and will do best in that role considering we have Fog and TT.

Not only is there no incentive for him to tank - there would have been massive incentive for him to climb the draft ladder and be a pick inside the top 20.

At minimum - the pay scale for rookies is about 105k for players in the top 20 compared to 90k for players taken after 40. Also top 20 players (pretty sure) are guaranteed 3 years in the system whilst picks 21 onwards are only given 2 year contracts.

Slipping in the draft this far could potentially cost him $135k.

He's likely getting more than 2 years, has more talent than our previous F/S selections. This straight away eliminates 90k of the 135k you say.

It's a nothing point.

Nothing in life is guaranteed except for guaranteed dollars. Nobody can predict the future. Could have a horrendous injury. Could spend too much time with our sponsor (hungry jacks).

The difference between a pick in the top 20 and a pick after 40 is $135k guaranteed at a minimum. Which is nothing to sneeze at.

Unpopular opinion incoming.

I reckon he gets delisted having never played an AFL game.

Unpopular but also just a bit silly and shows you don't know a lot about him. Clearly has the ability. If ned McHenry can play 70 games at afl level, then Welsh will definetly play.

Once you're in that environment (that welsh has been in this year), how is it possible to let yourself go without it being noticed very early on? Why has it taken a whole year for us to realise and give him a kick up the ass? Has it all been overblown?
I'd suggest, the Club wanted to see how Tyler self-managed himself this year .....rather than helicoptering him

Have no fears, Tyler is very much aware of his shortcomings .....hell, "have to get fit" has come up in almost every interview with him & about him

If you watch the SANFL Showdown late in the season you can see he has a lot of talent. Applied pressure on the opponent which he has no issue with as he is an excellent team mate, quick across the ground, kick goals from strong mark and on the lead and one way outside 50. It's just he let himself go end of the season which physically showed so unsurprisingly tested very poorly in 2km at the state combine.

He can football. Fogarty is the perfect mentor for him. Hopefully he (or T.Murray) might get to dip their toes in this year when Tex is managed* and then most likely the 3rd tall position is open for 2026, if he's good enough.

*Can we please get one season of Thilthorpe, Fogarty, Tex all fit and firing 🙏

Pure guesswork.

Has the talent.

But clearly needs to get fitter, but he knows it.

Hell yeah. Hopefully them sitting up the front of a very varied midfield now, including a good dose of speed and skill means we might get a decent weight of A grade delivery into them as well. "I'd like to see that".

Welsh seems like a footballers footballer. Can clunk a grab, nice kicking action, good on the lead, some forward smarts.

Hopefully part of his 2024 involved working on the other stuff. Defensive action, what you do when you don't have the ball. All the stuff that might prevent a raw newbie from playing in his first season or two.

Welsh isn't that raw. It's even in his highlights, the kid can be quite aggressive on the defensive side of things.

The big things are a) what does being AFL fit do to Welsh? and b) Do we even want a third tall in the post-Tex world?
