I rewatched a few of the games where Nash was in the centre and there were a few reasons why those games coincided with better midfield performances. As a midfield unit we were drawn less to the contest, we had more people occupying the outside of the contest which didn't allow easy clearances against us, and with guys like Nash and Newcombe we also had players who provided significant on ball pressure and didn't allow the ball to leak out to more damaging opposition players on the outside.

The set-up change was the key part, that said, it was the change up in players that allowed it to happen.

Like early days Sam Mitchell who went so much better with his mate Sewell at his side

Nash as a midfielder would be closed to elite too.
Exciting times ahead.
Yikes cmon.. I’m all for Nash, but he’s played 3 goodish games in the midfield to date and is hardly a lock for round 1. Have a look at the midfielders considered “elite”….

3 games in which he rated well.
Let him have 10 there so he is eligible for elite status.
Don't forget George Michael, you gotta have faith.

Will Langford had a similar amount of games at the back end of 2014 that would have been rated as elite or close to it - all at the right time of the year. Would you call Will Langford an elite midfielder on the weight of his career? No. Nash’s midfield games last year showed exciting potential - but calling him elite, or anything in that vicinity, is pretty daft.

Spot on.

I for one thought Nash was not up to it, but I hope he proves me wrong.

I spent 3 years desperately hoping and thinking he could be something, a point of difference, and a valuable contributor. Just his speed, height, athleticism...I always thought it had a place.

Finally, in the middle of last year, I was willing to go with the consensus that he wouldn't find a place in the sun...and then he got that run of games, and showed what he showed.

Long may it continue.

I wouldn't say the Bulldogs game was an excellent game for him.
I would say one excellent game. The others, he did his job and justified his place. The reason I am hopeful is that he showed a level of game awareness and ability to work in congested spaces that surprised me. He just seems to be getting the hang of the game and all the key skills - kicking, marking, handball - are developing. I think that the trajectory is very encouraging. However, as has already been pointed out, there are plenty who show a bit but fail to progress.

Lol it's getting a bit out of control, isn't it.

He has shown positive signs that he can have an AFL career, though. I'm not sure that was locked in mid way through last year.

Fun fact : The secret to Will's late season form was him not washing his hair for the entirety of the 2014 finals series.

What's the point of being elite, if your not doing it at the right time.

If they're gunna have a whinge about you, you hope they get the name right.

I invest in all hawk players and wish them well. The disparaging crapping on your own players means one has to point out the facts and defend them.

Anyone who ups sticks and moves half way around the world to play our game deserves some respect.

There's apparently a decent article on Nash from the Herald Sun offshoot - codesports. Does anyone have access and could provide a summary?

Great read…

If you open it on a browser click x before it loads their paid part and you will have a bit more of the article to read🙂

Didn't work for me :(

Would love some dot points on it if possible!
Quick summary:

  • Thinks Connor McKenna may return in the mid season says he doesn’t really like pre seasons haha.
  • Loves the current dynamic for pre season, Sam and the freedom he got to go home.
  • Trained with the new Irish lad 3/4 times a week in the lead up to Christmas.
  • Commented on clarko and Sam and the changeover basically saying it was strange times.
  • Commented about the new push to flatten the leadership at the club.
If you can be bothered to download Firefox might work better their it’s a really good article, which you don’t normally see.

And a good little snippet from Nash on his new found performance last year;

“Mitch said, ‘How do you want to get into the team? He said, ‘Let’s just try something new,’ between himself and Andy Collins, ‘Let‘s put you in the middle. We can use your run, we can use your size’. It’s a real contested situation, which is what I really like. Going back to my rugby days.

“I was getting stagnant. The change of position has really rejuvenated me.”

Now the job is to go on with it. To delay that tap on the shoulder for at least a few years yet.

But one day, Nash swears he will play again for Meath.

“Australia’s a great country. It isn’t home. As much as I do love it, it isn’t home.”
