Welcome to Hawthorn - Tom Mitchell - 2018 Brownlow medalist

Good luck Tommy. That Brownlow season was incredible. One of the best individual seasons in the Hawthorn colours I've seen. Hope success finds you elsewhere.

Just wasn't the right fit for our system at the end of the day but I think he will kill it at the Pies.

Love ya Tommy, been an awesome ride, some awesome highs and some tough lows, has been an awesome time supporting you at the club, no doubt i will continue to do so at Collingwood and watching you succeed there, hopefully.

Have loved the work you've done off field, and on field. It's been a treat :moustache:
You gonna be okay Dom? We’ve been worried about you 🤭

Hahaha, tbf alot of the action was in a thread i couldn't post in but now that's been locked tis go time.

But nah, loved the bloke, on field and off field, copped so much flak which was alot undeserving.

Keen to see how he goes at Collingwood and keen to see how we go in 2023 with a very, very, very, very young midfield group.

Am i your son?
My son.....Soon you will take over...

Hey guys, genuine question, not trolling. Has anyone heard whether or how much of Mitchell's salary might be covered in your cap?
According to gm of footy McCartney not much at all (and only first year?), nothing like what was mentioned heading into any trade by the media.

Its funny how we have had a significant amount of posters have a pretty decent crack at Tom's ability on these forums the last couple of years (plodder, cant kick, etc, etc)

But does anyone honestly believe he wont absolutely kill it at the Pies next year? I mean he averaged 28 possessions being played off the ball for a weak midfield this year and still finished 5th in our B&F.

Surround him with the likes of Pendles, Sidebottom, DeGoey, etc let him play as a pure inside mid and honestly he could make AA again averaging 35+ possessions a game.

Pies have got an absolute steal of a deal here for a couple of 40 round picks. Daylight robbery in fact.

Not a lot, if any.

Rob McCartney was on SEN yesterday explaining it.

Perhaps if you hadn't got rid of Grundy, we would have paid next year...but we definitely would have wanted pick 25 if we were doing that.

We did not need to dump salary at all. The ability to pay would have been in exchange for a better pick.

But it was a three way trade...you have to look at what EVERY team gained and lost.

They lost those two picks AND Henry...for Mitchell and pick 25

So they lost a sulky teenager who doesn't work hard and two 40 round picks (junk picks in other words) for a Brownlow Medalist and pick 25.

That's even more of a steal!

So we got rid of burned-out 30 year old for a 21 year old big bodied first round mid AND two picks???

Wow, we won that trade big time!!

(I'm being facetious...just showing anyone can play that game)

I am not personally against the Mitchell trade given where we are at the sides development phase.

And I don't think we got totally screwed in the deal (I would describe it as boderline acceptable/ meh kind of deal)

But bloody hell the Pies did well out of this trade.

Tom Mitchell will (and I mean 100% odds on certainty) play excellent footy for them the next three years. We know what Tom is like, no one will doubt that.

And they get pick 25?

I can't spin that as anything else but a massive win for the Pies. Very shrewd trading.

I would call the Pies a little ahead on the deal...but my Collingwood friends (at work at least) are absolutely spewing about losing Henry, and wanted a top 10 pick for him... so value is very subjective, and prone to personal judgements and biases

I would question how good Henry actually is if Ash Johnston (who from what I have seen is the very definition of a fringe/battler type player) was keeping him out of the senior side this year.

You are right of course value is very subjective but Tom Mitchell could get the Pies over the line to make a GF next year and they basically paid a couple of 40 round picks for him (if we say Oliver and pick 25 cancel each other out).

Of course the proof of the pudding will be evident next year and I for one will be watching Tom's performance at the Pies with quite a bit of interest.

I think it’s highly likely he will rack up an absolute ton of possessions next year. Especially as I expect the oppositions focus to be on other players next year.

The big question mark is how much damage he will inflict with those possessions. If he can get it into the hands of Daicos and Pendles at every opportunity he will be extremely damaging. If he blind kicks around the corner it like he did for us he won’t be.

Toms insta videos anything to go by he is pretty pumped to be out of Hawthorn.lol
Collingwood fans are as one-eyed as they come (both in a literal and figurative sense). He's just warming himself up to them.

It was his defensive side that kept Henry out of the side, not Johnston. It can be hard for very offensively minded players to find the balance and also they lack the training years to run both ways just as hard. But make no mistake, he is a match winner.

Yeah, it's a thing alright. I've loved watching Tom going about it for us. But I'd be lying if I said he hasn't frustrated me at times since returning from injury. Given where we are, I think we had to trade him, but I would've loved that pick 25.

Another angle, if a 3rd rounder sans salary coverage was such a steal, why wasn't there more interest from other clubs?

I reckon I'll definitely watch a few Pies games next season though. I can foresee scenarios like those described above with Tom distributing it out to a much more potent midfield 40 odd times means the Pies could be quite the handful. But I can also foresee scenarios where possibly the Pies midfield becomes a bit more "Hawthorn-like"*. So I'll definitely watch a few games. Our midfield has had a few "tics" the last few years. Curious to see whether they decrease on our side and increase on Pies side. Huge potential for confirmations bias notwithstanding.

* Along the lines of the old joke: "My brother in law might be coming the other way" for those that know it.
