I'm one Swans supporter who isn't particularly sad to lose Tom Mitchell. There was good reason for Horse keeping him in the NEAFL for so long. The Swans have invested heavily in him.
If you're expecting him to lead in the midfield you'll have to wait. He has long benefitted from having guys like Kennedy, Parker and Jack do the real heavy lifting while he's still very much a work in progress and may not live up to the hype.
Positives :
Good inside mid with potential
He could play as a small forward as he's a quick kick for goal but lacks the speed to put pressure on defenders.
Good at getting his hands on the ball in a pack. Quick hands. Quick reactions
Gets himself front & centre.
Hard to tackle and usually gets his hands free.
Good tackle if he can catch a player (player is not running)
Can negate another inside mid.
Negatives
Not a good ball user. The high possession count masks the fact that his disposals often go to our opponents, a stationary teammate or at best a 50:50 contest. Too often it's 'hot potato, pass it on' with Tom.
Sometimes wrestles his own team mates for the ball.
His kicking is shite. Inaccurate, up and under and his entries inside 50 mostly random.
He can't take a contested mark.
He doesn't chase
He can't run.
Performs best when the team is on fire. The 2016 final series was the first where he had a decent impact but he still went missing in the first quarter of the GF.
Whether Tom fulfills his much-vaunted potential with the Hawks, who knows ? Fixing his disposal would be a big win, particularly his kicking. Hawks have a reputation for accurate disposal so maybe it will rub off. Good luck with him.
For the Swans it's no big loss. We have excellent stocks of inside mids, most notably Kennedy. Perhaps one day we too will have a dynasty of Kennedys

That's strange - I would never have expected that from them.Swans fans now that Mitchell has left:
I do not miss Tom at all.
I am glad he is gone.
As am I.
B'oh!
My biggest fear watching the GF was that Tom was going to challenge Joey for the NS making it harder for the Swans to let him leave. Fortunately Horse helped us out by preferring Jack and Hannerbery in his midfield rotations after 1/2 time
I thought Jack was particularly effective.
Bwahahahahahahaha.

Yes a difficult diagnosis to make but based on evident traces of disposal anxiety disorder and lost marbles syndrome I believe it is a case of wishful thinking. A not too uncommon condition most evident on the JOM thread on the drafts board. Anyway my diagnosis based on one semester of psychology. Not sure if this is a troll nuanced for the perception of legitimacy or for real, but disposal efficiency is not a swans strong point in general. From what I've seen, his disposal is every bit as effective as that one really good player of yours (#12).

Well, they did make the Grannie 3 out of the last 5, for 1 win. Just a minor difference that we made it 4 times over that same period, for 3 wins.Weren't we reliably informed by a Swans visitor that, though he was 6th in line at the Swans, and they couldn't afford to pay him much above average wage, that he would be the best player at the Hawks?
So awesome, those Swans...awesome...

It's a battle on two fronts. Sooky Swans over here and Jade in that WC/Hawthorn thread.Jade likes this.
