I'm one Swans supporter who isn't particularly sad to lose Tom Mitchell. There was good reason for Horse keeping him in the NEAFL for so long. The Swans have invested heavily in him.

If you're expecting him to lead in the midfield you'll have to wait. He has long benefitted from having guys like Kennedy, Parker and Jack do the real heavy lifting while he's still very much a work in progress and may not live up to the hype.

Positives :
Good inside mid with potential
He could play as a small forward as he's a quick kick for goal but lacks the speed to put pressure on defenders.
Good at getting his hands on the ball in a pack. Quick hands. Quick reactions
Gets himself front & centre.
Hard to tackle and usually gets his hands free.
Good tackle if he can catch a player (player is not running)
Can negate another inside mid.

Negatives
Not a good ball user. The high possession count masks the fact that his disposals often go to our opponents, a stationary teammate or at best a 50:50 contest. Too often it's 'hot potato, pass it on' with Tom.
Sometimes wrestles his own team mates for the ball.
His kicking is shite. Inaccurate, up and under and his entries inside 50 mostly random.
He can't take a contested mark.
He doesn't chase
He can't run.
Performs best when the team is on fire. The 2016 final series was the first where he had a decent impact but he still went missing in the first quarter of the GF.

Whether Tom fulfills his much-vaunted potential with the Hawks, who knows ? Fixing his disposal would be a big win, particularly his kicking. Hawks have a reputation for accurate disposal so maybe it will rub off. Good luck with him.

For the Swans it's no big loss. We have excellent stocks of inside mids, most notably Kennedy. Perhaps one day we too will have a dynasty of Kennedys

Ah yes the heavy lifters Parker and Jack who led so well in 14 and against some inexperienced pups from the Bulldogs (who I like). Yes I remember Jack kicking goals and winning lots of possessions or not. Kennedy was equal to or may be better than Mitchell in the 16 GF as he should have been with the limited time Mitchell got. I wonder why oh why the previous coach of the year would do that?

Come on you're not hurting that bad are you? Of course he has deficiencies but if as bad as you're saying well he should be playing snap or monopoly. It's just as easy to find similar and more faults with Parker, Jack and Hanners. Good players but they'll be disappointed in themselves not gloating how much better they are. They'll work hard times 2 to fix their gaps.

The Kennedys, a great clan indeed and hopefully the love of AFL continues but for all we know the family could develop a love of ballet in the harbour city and swap short tights for long ones. Meanwhile you gave us Spangers for little with so many alleged faults yet he wasn't so bad in 14, was he?

Swans fans now that Mitchell has left:

I do not miss Tom at all.

I am glad he is gone.

As am I.

B'oh!

Love the $wines fan talking down an accumulating midfielder who is there to help us win the clearances etc because his weakness of not taking contested marks. Oh drat, there goes making him a KPF!

It's spooky how similar this situation is to when we lost Kennedy because he was surplus to our requirements.

Except Mitchell has shown far more than Kennedy had before he left. But we did pay more for him than they did.

And also both father/son picks for their respective clubs.

Would be great for us if he could at least become as good as Kennedy has been at the Swans. He wasn't far off him in the finals this year. But hard to know if he was able to look so good because he wasn't the main man, or if he was so good despite not being the main man. We'll soon find out.

My biggest fear watching the GF was that Tom was going to challenge Joey for the NS making it harder for the Swans to let him leave. Fortunately Horse helped us out by preferring Jack and Hannerbery in his midfield rotations after 1/2 time

I thought Jack was particularly effective.

Bwahahahahahahaha.

Not sure if this is a troll nuanced for the perception of legitimacy or for real, but disposal efficiency is not a swans strong point in general. From what I've seen, his disposal is every bit as effective as that one really good player of yours (#12).

Yes a difficult diagnosis to make but based on evident traces of disposal anxiety disorder and lost marbles syndrome I believe it is a case of wishful thinking. A not too uncommon condition most evident on the JOM thread on the drafts board. Anyway my diagnosis based on one semester of psychology.

Weren't we reliably informed by a Swans visitor that, though he was 6th in line at the Swans, and they couldn't afford to pay him much above average wage, that he would be the best player at the Hawks?

So awesome, those Swans...awesome...

Alright. Seems to me you under estimate his value. He will come into hawthorn and do a lot of heavy lifting in the midfield, where he is meant to play. He will be the player that gets the ball out and get clearances for us. To be honest i found it a bit crazy to hear he has been carried....JPK is the only midfielder better than him at the swans in my opinion.
Grandfinal: T-Mitch was your second best player, no doubt about it. 26 disposals, 2 goals, 2 clearances (came in off the wing a fair bit) and 13 tackles. Carried the midfield with JPK.
Prelim: T-Mitch again probably in the top 5 for that game. 27 disposals, 4 clearances and 6 tackles. Played a great game inside and got the hard ball gets. I was at the game and you would always see him getting the ball out of congestion and then to players like hannebery and parker.
Semi-Final: This just another example of tom playing a great finals game. 32 disposals, 9 marks, 1 tackle and 6 clearances. Again a top 5 player in a final.
Qualifying Final: 24 disposals, 3 tackles and 6 clearances. Again a good game and would be close top 5 again. Seems to me he is a big game player and will be sorely missed by the swans.

As for negatives:
Not a good ball user. The high possession count masks the fact that his disposals often go to our opponents, a stationary teammate or at best a 50:50 contest. Too often it's 'hot potato, pass it on' with Tom. Usually inside mids don't have the best disposal efficiency. Mitchell is the one giving the ball to parker and hannebery because they are the runners and by hot potato i think you mean get the ball to a team mate who can run and carry as that is what his job is to do.
Sometimes wrestles his own team mates for the ball. Yes he does, i agree with this. But doesn't that just show determination and his willingness to get the ball and get it out? Also a lot of inside/grunt midfielders to this as-well
His kicking is shite. Inaccurate, up and under and his entries inside 50 mostly random. Usually inside mids don't have the best disposal efficiency. A certain player who comes to mind is dangerfield....does the same thing and look at all the praise he gets :O
He can't take a contested mark. Surely this is a joke? 1.81cm taking contested marks? o_Oo_Oo_O
He doesn't chase/He can't run.: This is something that could be worked into his game, but again he is doing all the inside work which would be tiring and the outside players should be chasing. As for running, i think every footy player can run....:huh:
Performs best when the team is on fire. The 2016 final series was the first where he had a decent impact but he still went missing in the first quarter of the GF. He performed on the grandest stage when barely no turned up....also pretty much every player was missing.....Jack, Hannebery and Parker the guys that so could 'carry mitchell' where were they? Yes hannebery got injured but i believe that was last quarter when it was over? These are the same suspects that went missing in 2014.

Whether Tom fulfills his much-vaunted potential with the Hawks, who knows ? Fixing his disposal would be a big win, particularly his kicking. Hawks have a reputation for accurate disposal so maybe it will rub off. Good luck with him. If Mitchell plays like he did in 2016 for the rest of his career i think every hawks fan would be very happy with that and considering he will get more time in the centre and not come out from a flank or wing i think he will be a very good player.

For the Swans it's no big loss. We have excellent stocks of inside mids, most notably Kennedy. Perhaps one day we too will have a dynasty of Kennedys: Never know how much of a loss he will be till the next season, think swans fans may get a little shock as to what they will be missing. Yes Kennedy is great but he doesn't have his robin anymore to help with standing up in big games.

Have you ever tried so hard to convince yourself of something, that you decided that you needed to say it out aloud in the hope that someone would hear you and agree?

It's great that he's such an average player. According to most here on BF we managed to win three consecutive premierships with a team full of average players.

Well, they did make the Grannie 3 out of the last 5, for 1 win. Just a minor difference that we made it 4 times over that same period, for 3 wins.

With a completely inferior side, apparently...
