List Mgmt. Welcome Zane Trew (Pick 20, 2023 Rookie Draft)

I think the point is that any mid tends to look a million bucks when NN is rucking that well. He was brilliant yesterday.

Trew looked a bit Cripps-like with some of his ball handling, but one thing that’s good about him is that he doesn’t look flat footed in the contest unlike a Sheed.

Trew was playing his first game. What do you expect?

Give him another year, If no good we will have heap of youngsters coming thru from 2021 and 2022 draft.
Did Soldo get fined for trip?
Soldo got fined twice, one for tripping Trew and the second for wrestling with Naitanui

I think your criticism/observation is overly severe. Cripps has played 200 + games for the club, was outstanding in the game against Richmond and will go down as one of the greats of the club. He’s not without his flaws and can be fumbly before he regains his touch but he is without doubt a net positive despite some hating on him.

I think the jury is out on Trew and I am not saying his debut was great and that he should be retained. I am saying that he showed some ability in the third quarter despite Naitanui’s dominance. He has some weapons e.g - movement through traffic, vision, creative handball that I have not seen in other young mids that we have played over the last few years (e.g. O’Neill, Ainsworth, West, Clark even Foley, Duggan, Cole, Nelson who have all been consigned to the hbf because they couldn’t make it in the midfield).

When assessing Trew’s game surely it has to be borne in mind that the guy was playing his very first game and hasn’t come off really solid WAFL form. I don’t see it as realistic or fair to expect Shuey or Judd levels of ball handling and performance from such a novice. Most of us (all?) are rightly enthusiastic about the performances of Bazzo and Hough but they are both making some horrible mistakes. Everybody understands that this goes with the territory, you can’t expect a ripe fruit from a green one. I think Trew should be given the same leeway, a product in progress is not the finished article. One thing holding Trew back is the number of injuries he gets, I hope he makes it, we really need young midfielders coming through.

You’re extrapolating a fair bit there. I just meant he was a bit fumbly at times. Cripps is fumbly. Objectively speaking, Cripps has a case of the butterfingers. Doesn’t mean he’s crap and hasn’t been an excellent player for us - he has a heap of other capabilities that most other players don’t.

Trew was most likely only fumbly because he was nervous, but pointing out that he was does not equal a ‘severe criticism’

As I read it, with all due respect, your comment came across to me rather negatively. I understood you as either stating or implying the following -

1. Any mid could/should get touches with Naitanui - hence it was no big deal that Trew in his first game was involved in six score chains and kicked a goal. He only played to par in his first game if that.
2. He was fumbly like Cripps which is a downer on both Trew and Cripps. You didn’t mention in your first comment that perhaps he fumbled because he was nervous which may well have been the case. Who wouldn’t be nervous playing their first game in an Eagles jumper at the MCG?
3. Your last comment that “at least he wasn’t flat-footed like Sheed” was a kind of backhanded compliment to Trew and a dump on Sheed, who was second in the f & b last year.

So you made one grudging positive comment and four negative comments about Trew and two established members of the teams best 22. Consequently your comment came across as pretty negative to me. A number of people in better positions to know than us have made positive comments about Trew, unfortunately he has been rather tarred by Peter Sumich’s public comment that he was a ‘sook’ although that did enable us to pick him up (a little like Darling).

I don’t know whether he will be any good, I thought he showed some promising signs in his first game just as he did in the pre-season game against Fremantle at the beginning of last season. I am allowing myself to hope a little bit that he may be able to stay injury free and turn out at least an okay player. We definitely need to rebuild our midfield with Shuey and Redden near the end and possibly Gaff also who seems to have fallen off a cliff plus Yeo moving to the backline when he is fit.

Looking at his output on paper this year it kind of almost justifies an extension. Regularly the best in the WAFL and has contributed in the few opportunities he’s gotten at AFL, and was particularly damaging yesterday against the Dogs.

I don’t have a strong view either way on Trew but given what I’ve seen of him, and our impending list hole in the 21-24 year old bracket, I’m half hoping he gets another year now.

He and Winder can't be any worse than the other blokes who are keeping them out. Foley, O'Niell, LEdwards etc.

Trew is super slow. He looked good coming on in the 4th when both teams were gassed and he was fresh. Has looked terrible in his other games when he came on early.

I'd keep him over O'Neil as we haven't seen all his potential, but if we need more list spots, he's definitely on the delist pile.

Really liked what I saw from Trew yesterday. 7 disposals, a clearance, a goal and a couple of tackles plus good pressure applied in only 23% game time is a good return.
One thing I did notice was towards the end of the quarter he was chasing a player but was obviously absolutely gassed. Good on him for still trying his guts out but that may be the thing keeping him out of the team. He had the freshest legs on the ground so should have been full of running. If he gets another year on the list, a big pre-season to get the fitness up to scratch would be his focus.
