Hear hear.

Generally speaking, I'm of the belief that when recruiting through any avenue, character should be a part of the equation.

Not that "he comes from a good family", anglo saxon private school crap, but factors like work ethic, team first attitude, sacrifice and integrity are the kinds of traits that help build a group's culture, and lead to sustained success.

I know that some people will say who cares, I just want flags and I get that perspective.

I think there's enough talent out there that you can build a flag winning side with players you can be proud of and that represent themselves and the club well both on and off the field.
I believe it is.
And it’s also why Stephenson and Ginnivan got jettisoned.
We have a good culture.

Agree entirely with all that. Flags don't come at the expense of club culture. I don't think its achievable in that sense.

Hard to make the observation for young players in how they impact club culture, but i guess the sports that professional nowadays you do see the occasional players that were perceived to go high, drop quite low. Due to off field.

Work ethic and team first attitude are absolutely paramount.

The Dayne Beams of the world are the ones that can really divide a good club culture quite quick with the way he presents and talks in and around the media whilst at a club. Glad we have made more astute pick ups through mature players in Lipinski, Houston, Perryman, Mitchell, McStay, Markov & Hill in recent years

Fly cant be left undervalued either. His mentality and approach has lifted this club from the Buckley days

Imagine deciding to steal something and out of all the people you run into, it’s Sav Rocca😂 Deserved Bad luck
The best ending to that story would have been the kid running away just over the horizon, Sav grabs a full water bottle and launches it into a torp that follows the kid over the horizon. Then there's a small fiery flash, a distant yelp and a puff of smoke and he pays for his stuff and walks out.

It's how Sir Alex Ferguson built Man U from the ground up.

And he was ruthless with it. Proof was in the pudding, wasn't it? The way Roy Keane speaks about their dressing rooms is really insightful. The players ran that place like clockwork and had zero tolerance for selfishness. And as soon as Sir Alex left, it all fell apart.

Same for Klopp at Liverpool. Anyone with the right mentality was embraced, but anyone who put themselves first or refused to do the hard, unglamorous work was not welcome.

Yep. I think we probably cut Jordy a bit more slack due to his prodigious talent. But I think it's also very evident that many of his problems stemmed from his undiagnosed ADHD. Look at him since the work he's done with Jacqui Louder, and the things his teammates say about him - they all love him. It all points to a good bloke who really needed help, rather than character flaws. Which again points to a good culture.

You can see why players like Houston and Perryman are happy to come to the club and play for Fly. We don't tolerate BS (see my last post!) but we also see the difference between a fundamental character flaw and someone who needs help.

Amen! I think we all hold out heads a little higher too, when our club is represented by good men and women. When you see a gem of a human like Bobby do well, it's all the sweeter.

I was at a pre-season function in 2018 that included a tour of the facilities etc and it was just after Jordy got in trouble for the drink driving incident. He had been suspended (if I recall correctly) by the club and had only just come back that day. Anyway, the players clearly liked him a lot and were rapt to see him back. It was very genuine too.

Former Collingwood running machine Jay Rantall has become the latest ex-Pie to join Geelong’s VFL side.
The Cats have confirmed the signing of Rantall, 23, for the 2025 season.

It comes after this masthead revealed on Monday that Geelong had secured former Collingwood key forward Nathan Kreuger.

Rantall, 23, played five senior games for the Magpies in 2021 before being delisted at the end of that year after being taken with pick 40 in the 2019 draft.

Geelong VFL coach Mark Corrigan expects the midfielder to add to their engine room.

“Jay Rantall brings some AFL experience and he is an elite runner,” Corrigan said.

“He is a really nice ball user, someone who will complement our inside midfielders, he is going to complement that group really well, and again he is another mature body coming in.”

A talented dual sportsman who represented Australia at junior level, Rantall signed with Geelong United’s NBL1 side in March this year.

But Rantall went on to play four games with Werribee’s VFL side and had a further 10 appearances for his local club South Warrnambool in the Hampden league in 2024.

He spent a year in the SANFL with Norwood in 2022 in his first year out of the AFL system and played five games for Footscray VFL in 2023.

The endurance specialist boasts the fourth best 2km time trial of all-time at the AFL draft combine, running it in a blistering 5 minutes and 50 seconds.
