Read the How Few Remain series by Harry Turtledove...research the order of the titles carefully, because the sequence isn't obvious from the names of the books. It's about half a dozen books starting from the Civil War going past WW2, all starting from a single sliding door moment where a Union soldier loses some orders which are recovered by the Confederates, changing the result of the Civil War and everything which stems from that...fascinating...!

No chance. France had abolished slavery, and its own revolution was diametrically opposed to the concept of it.

Also, the north was always going to win. Like Russia and Germany in ww2. Despite whatever military advantage may have existed on the south/german sides they couldn’t compete once the industrial base of the north/russia kicked in (and there’s a fair argument they north had better generals anyway). The advantage was just too great.
