"1986 saw the continued expansion of the VFL eventually turning into a national competition. The early days of the newly formed West Coast Eagles proved to be quite the challenge being furthest away from the rest of the competition. It's 1991 and to combat dwindling numbers, jet lag and the possibility of folding, they had their sights on a more closer competition, the SANFL. They reached out asking for a league transfer, the SANFL accepted their proposal under one condition. At this time, Woodville and West Torrens had just merged and kept the Eagles moniker, so West Coast would have to enter under a different nickname. They chose the native Koala as their mascot and kept their current colours of Blue and Gold in the style of a Koalas chest with the Vee shape. In later years, they adopted an inverse variant to prevent jumper clashes and swapped the gold base for the blue base as their home jumper"

I’m a big believer that in an ideal world they would’ve gone down the same path as the Crows and been called the Perth Swans wearing a black jumper with a yellow sash. Of course the existence of Richmond, Sydney and Perth prevented this. With Richmond and Sydney taken out of the equation, but Glenelg and West Torrens existing, there’s a bit more freedom existing here. As such, despite all entries being quite strong, I had to go with Mac Ropod’s design. Something about it feels very parallel to what they did wear in 1987, maybe the mascot being so prominent and the design being top heavy, whatever it is though I love it.
