"It's the start of the 1900's and Port Adelaide are facing a crisis with their jumpers. The Magenta pigment was in short supply and was difficult to maintain in this era, until news broke that a ship washed ashore near North Haven. Police examined the wreckage and found that the ship came from France and inside were stockpiles of chemical dyes. The majority of them came from the Rafard factory in Lyon, France where the magenta dye originated. Port Adelaide officials caught wind of this and made the trip up north to acquire the dye and their issue was sorted. Faced with the possibility of switching to a more manageable black and white, the magenta pigment saw a boom in production all over the world in the coming years, even inside the clubs HQ! So they decided to keep the magenta to this day and even carrying it over into their switch to the AFL"

"The 1900s were a difficult time for many. Surprisingly however, an unexpected boom in the economy of the South Australian capital injected vital funding into the South Australian Football Association. The Port Adelaide Football Club, facing a shortage of magenta dye, had drawn up plans for a backup guernsey should they fail to obtain their desired colour. The much needed cash allowed the club to purchase a stockpile of the valuable resource. However, players liked the 'prison bar' design that had been created, pressuring the club to adopt a magenta version, becoming an instant classic. Ever since, barring a short period during the second world war, the Mariners, as they came to be known, have always worn magenta and blue prison bars. The gold made a return in the mid seventies with the advent of early colour TV. The sustained success of the Mariners made them the obvious choice for a first Adelaide based team in the VFL, officially joining in 1991 after a short dispute with Fitzroy over similar colours."
