"Fresh off their 1975 VFA Premiership, the VFL extended an invitation to West Geelong to compete in their competition in 1976. To avoid clashes with South Melbourne, they adopted a striped kit and red number panel to alleviate the issue"

"It was decided by the VFL at the end of 1974 to let University Blacks back into the competition starting from the 1976 season.
They needed 14 teams and also invited VFA powerhouse Port Melbourne into the competition starting season 1976.
The VFA fearing losing their biggest draw card went to the courts
It was determined in the end that the 1975 VFA Premiership gets the VFL spot.
To everyone surprise it was Geelong West Roosters who stood up to the challenge.
Not to clash with South Melbourne, the Roosters mixed red and and white to get their third and main colour pink."
