AFL Club
North Melbourne
My 7 year old and I have been playing a lot of FC24 lately. I'm starting to think that I should diversify the monopoly North have on the sports zone of my brain and find a soccer team to follow.

Which one taps into the North mindset the best? My first instinct is Leicester, just for the underdog thing. But truthfully, I know bugger all about the histories to have an informed opinion.

And while you're here... are there obvious similarities between North and teams in the NBA, NHL, MLB, and so on?

I think that we're the Detroit Pistons in the NBA.

Historical reputations of playing hard and tough.
Had successful teams a little while ago (Carey era roos and the early 00s Pistons), but followed it up with long stretches of mediocrity, then attempts to knock down and rebuild that have led to being stuck on the bottom.

The Pistons had the biggest losing streak in NBA history last season. They've finished bottom 2 in the east in the last 4 seasons.

Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga have given me many North like frustrations over the past decade, whether it be their inability to put games to bed or just outright choking.

They have had their glory years however much like North in the 70's and 90's. But they pretty much have the perennial underdog tag which is why I adopted them in the first place.

Have had financial difficulties in the past too, only being saved from bankruptcy by arch rivals Bayern in the early 2000's.

Toronto “Make Believes”.
Interesting. Why? Just the lack of recent success?

My old man was raised in northern Alberta, so he's always been pretty hardcore into the Oilers.

Had a great run from '84-90, but seem to have only come back to relevance in the past several years.

Manchester United went to the well so many times wasted so much money, sacked a few managers on the journey and just when you think they have turned the corner put on shitful performance after shitful performance that will surelysee another manager sacked.

Except when Man U put on a shitful performance I'm extremely happy. :)

Second the Pistons. Bit of transposing required (we were probably one of the dirtier teams in the league at one point, but it was about thirty-five/forty years before the Bad Boys came along), but the small fanbases and general historic record of highs and lows more or less match up. Particularly with the bookended dire early and modern-day struggles. Throw in the industrial/urban grit element too

Sheesh what a frustrating thread, up there with attending funerals and preparing tax returns....

I wont even mention the recent woes of following West Brom. Oh crap i just did.

I wish we were as good as my Serie A club!

Similar colours, both clubs had the GOAT (both goats liked a bit of marching powder and hung around gangsters), similar success, North have 4 flags, they have 3 titles and 1 UEFA Cup.

That’s a great comparison.

Cincinnati Bengals
  • Always lose Rd/Week 1 after offering much hope
  • Burn top draft picks
  • Horrendous free agency signings
  • Overrated players
  • Lost all 3 Superbowl appearances after leading in the last quarter
  • Lost 2 Superbowls after leading the majority of the game in the last 30 seconds
  • Range between offering hope to go all the way, to the worst team in the league
  • Can have the league MVP, or best players in certain positions but never dominate
  • Will find a way to lose an inexplicable game late in the season to completely screw up the seedings and home ground advantage for the entire playoff series
  • Always seem to have an achilles heel that no amount of trading, drafting, or free agency signings seem to address
  • Will invent tactics like the West Coast Offence and No Huddle Offence that is then perfected by other teams
  • Once lost a Super Bowl where the full back didn't play due to being caught doing cocaine in his hotel room the night before the game, the best defensive player broke his leg in 2 places in the first quarter and a cornerback dropped a would be game winning interception in the last quarter. The next play resulted in a touchdown with 34 seconds to go blowing the lead and cemented the legend of Joe Montana.

I'm gonna be honest, there are a few AFL fanbases that would lay claim to mirroring this. Everyone thinks their team's unique in its ability to do much of the above, and it's not really the case. Also, we've actually won a few

Definitely the Pistons (NBA)

Honestly not a terrible shout.

My basic criteria for finding a comparable team to NMFC in another league is;
  • Won championship/s 20~ years ago but been a bit no-mans-land ever since
  • Proud club but can't be one of the top tier/rich clubs (no ManU/Dallas Cowboys/Yankees etc)
  • Have had some incredible individual talent
  • Have been crucial in furthering the sport in some way (ala Friday Night Footy, or a specific type of playstyle such as Pagan's Paddock)
Detroit fits all these criteria reasonably well.

My nominee was gonna be the Toronto Blue Jays - they won the World Series 2x in the 90s, aren't the biggest club, have had some incredibly talented and important players etc
