If Aussie Rules was an Olympic sport, which players would be representing our country right now?

This is not the same as an AA team as consistency over all 22 rounds is not as important. The team would be picked purely on who is most likely to bring us a gold medal (in form players and 50/50 decisions decided by strategy or through who 'deserves' the honour more).

Who would you pick to represent us in the Olympics if the Gold Medal match was this weekend?

You would have to mould it around Geelong because they already have such a good structure. Just plug little holes here and there. Fev at FF, Brown at CHF, Cox in the Ruck etc etc.

Just send Fremantle. Every country in soccer just sends in their dropkick team we might as well do the same for footy. Not sure about the gold medal though...

Given the standard of AFL worldwide. I'd say a secondary school side should get the job done comfortably. And I'll even tip the Irish for silver & PNG for bronze.

I would take a bet with you that New Zealand would take the silver. They have won the last couple of international challenge series comfortably.

Correct.

I wouldn't have Fev in the cats team...would change the way they play which atm is as a total team. Fev would make them somewhat one dimensional. Maybe throw in Richo and Deledio just to get a couple of Tige's in there :thumbsu:

Why the hell would you throw Richo and Deledio in, what are they going to offer. Putting Fev in there would not make the cats one dimensional, as unlike Carlton, Geelong have many other options. It is Fev who would have to adapt.

AFL players who might have been Olympians

Quite a number of current AFL players gave up another sport in order to play AFL.

It made me wonder which ones would have made it in their other sport at the Olympics?

Athletics - sprint and long distance - think there would be a couple.

Volleyball - probably a couple (I'd even suggest Mitch Clark from Brisbane Lions)

Athletics - high jump - definitely

Rowing - probably

Re: AFL players who might have been Olympians

Lance Franklin could have made it in athletics.

Re: AFL players who might have been Olympians

David Hille was originally a gun volleyball player before converting to AFL at age 18. Was on a AIS (or VIS, I can't remember) scholarship before switching to AFL.

There was a big article on him in the Footy Record a month or so ago mentioning how he was happy to have chosen AFL, but was a little envious now that some of his former team-mates were in the Australian Olympic volleyball team.

Happy we got him though:thumbsu::thumbsu:

Re: AFL players who might have been Olympians

Tom Hawkins, high jump and shotput.

Yeah maybe not olympics, but he was APS champ at both. Pretty interesting combo too...

James Sellar is meant to be a gun volleyballer too.
