Interesting fact on On The Couch last night was that every premiership side since 2002 had 5 or more players that kicked 20+ goals in their premiership year. Last year Geelong had 9 players that did it.

Last year we had only 3.

With our forward restructure, I now ask the question to you; who will be the players that kick the goals for us?

I'm gonna go with:

Setanta
Eddie
Yazz
Murph
Hendo

Solid contributions should also come from:

Waite
Judd
Kroooooz
Gibbs
Simpson
Carrots
Robbo

All in all, I reckon that this restructure, once we work our way through the short term pain, will be fantastic for our future premiership chances! :thumbsu::thumbsu:

I'd say we'll have more than 5.

Setanta
Eddie
Yarran
Henderson

All 4 of them, I'd suggest, are certainties. All of them should play close to every game, and they are all getting sufficient opportunities to easily pass the 20 goal mark.

Then comes the contribution from the midfield:

There is no reason why Murphy can't produce the same amount of goals this year as he did last year. Expect him to easily pass 20 goals.

Gibbs kicked 15 goals last season but seems to be getting himself into goal-kicking positions far more this year than he did last year. There will be some games where he doesn't impact the scoreboard but some games where he pops up with 2 or even 3. I expect him to improve on last season and get to 20.

If McLean can help Judd go back to his natural running game then there is no reason why he can't reach 20 goals, either. Judd is a natural goalkicking midfielder, who hasn't been able to show us that over the last few seasons because of a change in role. Now that we have someone to get the ball out to him rather than relying on him to get the ball out, I expect him to impact the scoreboard more than last season. He kicked 15 goals in 2009, and I think he'll be able to improve on that.

Simmo is also a possibility to get close.

The best thing about Fevola leaving is that it demands improvement from the other players in the team - and from what I've seen thus far this season they are ready to deliver. We may no longer have a superstar up forward, but we have a number of guys that are willing to all do their bit and work together to form an unpredictable and damaging forward line.

We saw a great improvement in goalkicking from the midfielders last year and there is absolutely no reason why a similar return cannot be expected. In fact, I expect them to improve on this.

We are now kicking goals as a team, rather than an individual - and we will be better off as a result, of that I have no doubt.

I expect 7 Carlton players to kick over 20 goals. Obviously that won't deliver us a premiership in 2010 and it is not expected to - but what it will ensure is that we are competitive in every game we play, and it will go a hell of a long way to ensuring that we make the finals once more in 2010.

I think we'll have quite a few...

  • Setanta 40+
  • Henderson 30+
  • Waite 30+
  • Betts 30+
  • Yarran 20+
  • Murphy 20+
  • Judd 20+
  • Simpson 20+
  • Gibbs 20+
And I wouldn't discredit Kreuzer chipping in close to 20 as well.

We are developing a dynamic mid/forward line goal kicking machine!

You forget McLean himself, 2 goals from 2 games puts him on track for 22 and the one from 50 on Thursday night puts paid to the comments that he can't kick 30 mtrs :)

I left out a number of players from my original post.

There are a fair few more players that could get to 20 goals but that doesn't necessarily mean I think they will. ;)

Waite & Kreuzer are capable of getting to 20 goals (Waite is capable of getting to 30) but I doubt they will.

McLean, as you say, is on track for 22 goals, but I don't expect him to continue getting 1 goal per game. Sure, it would be very nice, but I can't see it happening.

But hey, I'd love to be proven incorrect - the more the merrier!

I see a few similarities with the all conquering Geelong team. A-grade midfield, and not one real focal point up forward, but the much preferred spreading of the load. The 4 that I really think are dead certainties to kick 20+ are Henderson, Setanta, Waite and Betts. Waite will play the majority of the year in the forward line, and with the amount of opportunities he will get, should have no problems kicking 20.

There are a number of other players that could kick 20+ - Murphy, Gibbs, Judd, Yarran and Simpson. There's 9 players who could legitimately kick 20+ for the year, now all we have to do is take those chances and not waste them like we did on Thursday night.

Hate to be a negative nilly, but this year, no chance of this happening. If Henderson kicks more than 15, it will be a bonus. Waite won't kick 30, Sentanta will be pushing very hard for 40. Yarran will probably kick sbout 10. I would say in about 2 years time, this will be the goal kicking list.

You think once Judd comes back our key forwards will actually go worse than what they are now?

I think jj was overly optimistic but you're being way too reserved.

Yarran's had 5 shots in 2 weeks. Even last year he kicked 4 goals from 6 games. Will kick 10 in a canter provided he stays fit. Will be surprised if he doesn't kick 20.

Henderson's already on 4. Don't think he'll kick much more than 20 but I can definitely see him averaging a goal a game for the season.

Setanta will, Henderson will, Waite should if he plays up forward, and Betts will. Murphy likely will, Simpsons a shot, Yarran should and Gibbs will be round the mark. Hopefull Judd can hit the scoreboard a bit harder too.

Sounds about right. Though I think Yarran could push into the 25-30 mark. Hendo is definately looking like he could push above 30 comfortably.

Strong and promising showing from Hendo. Ave 2 goals a match so far.

geelong had 9 players with 20+, but they also had geelong's defence at the other end...

i don't care how our team wins games but if we manage the same output this time over a few players we probably still need to tighten down back. or tighten up in the midfield as ratts has alluded to.

setanta and hendo look the goods but you'd imagine there would be some goalless games in there. ala yarran + betts last game. i don't think kreuzer will kick many. will probably be some surprises. i like waite forward, you'd imagine he takes the best defender and leaves setanta/hendo with defender 2 and 3.

I love the fact that we can actually ponder on all these possibilities - it's exciting. :)

It is exciting, given that we were so Fevola focused up until the end of last year. As good as Brisbane looked on Thursday night, if the opposition can curb the impact Fev and Brown have, they'll really struggle to kick a winning score.

Setanta: 40-50 on current form
Waite: 30 goals if played at CHF continually
Henderson: 30 goals
Betts: 35 goals
Yarran: 25 goals
Murphy: 20 goals

^ if the above targets are met we'll play finals.

I'm hoping we target someone like Mitch Morton.

He can play okay at Richmond, imagine what he'd do playing in an AFL team.

Not necessarily him though, but someone like that (Mid sized)

Sorry - just didnt want to start a whole new thread.

Hopefully Tiller or Labi will develop into that player.

A midsized goal kicking forward is probably another 'lack of' we have. Labi is raw, and will take a long time, Tiller looks as though he will end up as a backman, Robinson is a great tackler and can find his own footy but doesnt have enough scoring shots for mine.
I assume the club will be looking at a player to fill this spot at the end of the year.

Mckinley might come cheap, as he is struggling for games. Perhaps even Ryan Gamble who has talent but is kept off the park by Geelongs stars. Maybe the club even views it as the biggest weakness and will throw big money at a Gray or Porplyzia, enen though it is exremely doubtful either would make the move.

At the end of the day the forwards we have all all bit players, if we are pining our hopes on HEnderson and O Hopeless we are in alot of trouble.

We need to recruit a decent KP forward at years end or run the risk of wasting all the good years we have with murphy, gibbs, kruze etc..and finsihing mid table and if we do make the finals be 1st/second week at best and bottoming out again.

Betts and Yarran can and will be hot and cold and not consistent (see last Thursday night) and O Hopeless/Henderson combo wont be kicking 4 every week..seriously.

Waite must go forward as a key postion forward at very least.

Setanta is third in the Coleman. Close to a breakout game.

Get on board.

Break out game this weekend... the bummers are going to be hard pressed finding someone to really match up on him.

I am expecting 6 or 7 goals from him this week to really put the cat amongst the pidgeons :)
