I expected the Hawks to rise this year and finish 10th or 11th from memory and marginally ahead of Essendon. Albeit, that was before Injuries took hold.

They really took it up to the Cats a few weeks back at different stages and looked really good. I was quite impressed how they played and was genuinely worried they were going to overrun us at different stages.

The Gold Coast game was a shocker, but they haven't looked miles off it in most of the other games. Could have easily won a couple more. I could definitely see them rallying late in the season.I genuinely rate Sam as a coach and I'm sure he will get through this tough period and be the better for it.

Having said all that, they won't surpass Essendon who have started very well despite the terrible Power loss. People were saying they would be 7-0 to start the season, which was insulting and they have proven themselves to be a more than worthy opponent on their day.

Well the dons “walked the walk” and landed themselves a genuine KPD today.
Obviously McKay was impressed with the facilities on offer at the hangar which should assist the club’s cause in 2024 …
Except you it seems

McKay proving everyone wrong so far

He's been good. Still don't think he's worth the wage but that's probably just me not adjusting to the new era of big contracts.

North Melbourne is just a blackhole of development.

Ben McKay is literally 4th in total intercepts and 15th in contested marks (presuming 95% would be intercepting being a last line defender)

Think you're underselling him substantially

In my mind anyone getting paid 7 figures a year should be top 10 players in the comp. I'm talking the Judd's, Buddy's, Ablett's and Martin's etc.

Like I said my thinking is probably outdated. It's a new era of money now.

He's been good. Really tied your back 6 together anchoring the defense.

I dont think that is outdated. You dont pay the huge money for good or even for very good. Dons may have us this year, but its very easy to see it could be us next year.

He's also on a heavily front ended contract, so will be making peanuts relative to his contemporaries when he hits his prime

Id prefer to overpay someone who is worth it than overpay someone who is not.

Think you'd be happier paying Karl Amon $750,000 a year than Sam Frost $750,000 a year (not saying right now but the paint remains).

McKay is a very good, if not exceptional defender. Bordering on elite.

As a list with lots of cap space, its smart salary cap management to bank the money to guys who are worth it.

add in the Merrett, Parish, Redman contracts that no doubt will be front ended and im tipping Essendon could pay a mint circa 2028 when these long term deals are paying peanuts to the lot of em

You would think 26 turning 27 he would be well within the start of his prime years now.

This is about the most misleading poll I've seen on big footy.

You can't measure who is better based on wins over one season.

Essendon has been a basket case - in the genuine sense of that word, for a very, very long time. They've been worse than bad.

They can bank as many wins as they want in 2024, but the jury is still out on how good a club they are in 2024.

Maybe if they win a flag, and some serious humanitarian type gong they'd be in the frame.

As it stand now, aren't they just a club with more convicted criminals or drug cheating program organizers on their past senior coaching roll during the last 10-14 years, than every other club combined?

Ironically enough, they're also the only club I'm aware of to have falsely dobbed in another club for drug cheating.

If that is all correct, doesn't it kind of overshadow anything they've done on field for two odd decades by some margin?

I can only imagine how extremely p*ssed of you get anytime you see Essendon win.

I think essendon will win a few more this year so you might need to start listening to Enya or stay away from the internets.

It's honestly just not that big of a deal for anyone watching AFL, I believe you have what's known as a relevancy complex here.

The truth is that nobody likes Essendon or really thinks they're relevant. I'm definitely not going to argue that point with you.

But then by the same token nobody is that upset watching their fuddy-duddy supporters cheering the troops on towards another rendition of 'Flying up to win the Premiership Flag'.

It's just all very difficult to take seriously in 2024.

Very salty.
