Hawthorn
I heard that the hawks are going down the pokies :(

Can anyone confirm this?

I thought we were meant to be a family club not breaking families up! Being a member this is disappointing! Russel Crow get rid of them at the Rabbitos, they are not good for a club

I did enjoy the win on the weekend though

Re: Happy team at Hawthorn? Pokies!!!!!!!

Yeah pokies so what? I play pokies, others play pokies and then a lot don't. I don't think Hawthorn is in it to "break up families". Yeah while it does happen, we all make our own choices and no one else is responsible for them.
Therefore if you feel you have a gambling problem, addictive personality or financial problems then stay away. For me if I have a couple of bucks to spare and I can enjoy a drink with mates at a nice venue then I'm all for it. If I'm dumb enough to throw my mortgage in a machine then who's fault is that? Mine I'd reckon. Why don't we ban party poker on the internet, close the tab and shut down the casino? Great sentiment and I agree gambling is not a good habit to promote but I don't reckon there's much we can do. Ultimately as long as some profits from gambling are put towards problem gamblers and helping people who do lose the plot, it's good enough for me.

Hi - just to catch you up to speed. Hawthorn had a Social Club with Pokies at Glenferrie for the past 16 years, but it has now closed.

It has had a pokies venue at Waverly Gardens for about 10 years and it runs very profitably for the club.

Thanks for your attention.

Re: Happy team at Hawthorn? Pokies!!!!!!!

Hawthorn is developing an entertainment complex, which will have numerous restaurants, a pub and a club, and possibly a movie theatre. It will vertually be a small version of Crown Casino. The main money generated will not be from Electronic Gaming Machines, but other things (listed above).

I would be more upset with the StKilda Football Club, who wanted to redevelop moorabbin oval to accomodate for a reported 250 MORE EGM's. the HFc were not going to have more machines. people forget that they lost a large amount moving from Glenferrie. The club would just be reinstated with the amount they lost in the move.

Has that development in Caroline Springs been approved by Shire of Melton yet ? Hope it get's to go ahead as it will be a good business venture for the Hawthorn F.C. and maintain the Hawks in the forefront with Collingwood,Essendon and the Carltons to gain the upper hand as the financial power clubs. All Victorian clubs have to think outside the square to remain competitive and be a force to survive with our interstate rivals as they only have two teams in their capital cities.

Not sure if it has been approved, however, everyone has just heard "Pokies" and kicks up a fuss, they ignore the fact that the revenue from the machines if the venue gets the go ahead will be minimal

Re: Happy team at Hawthorn? Pokies!!!!!!!

Nothin wrong with puttin $20 a month in. That's around about as much as I throw down the machines to try out the luck. If I win something, I win something if I lose it, oh well I lost $20. The problem is knowing when to stop. I've known people to blow $6,000 at the pokies. I honestly can't understand how they can spend that much. Those things are so boring.

The steal from their employers, they steal from their kids. They are sick people who are ruining their families and their lives, but eh, if we're getting richer....more pokies i say ;)

Re: Happy team at Hawthorn? Pokies!!!!!!!

.

Hawthorn Football Club Social have had poker machines since the Victorian government introduced licenses many years ago.

What I see of our club, we remain as big a family club as ever in spirit from the board of directors through to the administrators, staff, players and we the supporters - mums dads, kids, bachelors and pretty gals.

Pokies are only a part of the life of those who wish to indulge as is all other varieties, such as betting on most professional sports including football, horses, cricket, and silliness like two-up and flies crawling up walls.

I never bet because I don't have any desire to do so. It's called personal control and discipline. For each his/her own.

Gambling is in the eye of the beholder.

*steps down from soap box - removes clerical collar*

I like gambling, i.e. poker and the track, but pokies are just a leech on society.

Re: Happy team at Hawthorn? Pokies!!!!!!!

Guns don't kill people - people kill people.

Just like that, it's not the actual pokies machines that are to blame for peoples' gambling problems, it's the people themselves who spend money on it.

Let's legalize heroin then shall we?

I'm not saying I'm opposed to this development (In actual fact I'm with Philhawk in that stupid/weak people deserve little sympathy) but it's not exactly the non-issue it's being made out to be.

Re: Happy team at Hawthorn? Pokies!!!!!!!

I feel uneasy that Hawthorn have poker machines, however the Hawthorn Football Club is a business, and I would rather have a profitable football club in Melbourne, than an unprofitable Melbourne football club looking down the barrell of relocation or extinction.

In this competitive environment, Hawthorn needs to have as many different sources of revenue to survive, so I don't have a problem with them opening gaming venues, as long as they act as a responsible operator, and redistribute some of the revenue gained back into the community.

Everything seems to be someone else s fault these days!

I personally think that playing pokies is the most boring thing imaginable but people have to take responsibility for their own lives. If they want to play them it's up to them to keep it under control.

Otherwise we should be blocking every move/television show/song with violent content - people go on rampages and kill people because of violent entertainment.

it is worth noting that the Pokies at Glenferrie Social Club actually lost money, part of the demise of the Social club
