I know it probably has a lot to do with television rights/Foxtel.etc, but I was looking forward to watching the Carlton vs Collingwood match on the big screen last Sat, and then tuned in to see a VFL match I couldn't care less about, and remembered that oh no, channel 7 doesn't telecast any Saturday arvo games, the traditional time slot. It just seems odd they wouldn't telecast such a huge game, which is probably one of the biggest matchups in the normal home and away season. I have the AFL Live Pass, but why only on mobile devices? Why not on your PC? I remember you could last year, unless my memory is off, but I think I remember watching on my laptop. I used to only watch big games that weren't broadcast. I guess I could screen mirror, but for some reason I've forgotten how to/or my TV doesn't allow it anymore.

Wish there was an AFL Live App directly on Smart TVs, that would be great.

Huge game?

It was one of least significant match-ups so far this season.

Basically they're obliging people who want to watch the footy on their TV to get Foxtel. They've cracked down a lot harder on YouTube match videos as part of that.

Wonder if Foxtel had a sort of pay per view arrangement, if that would work out. Like say, you can pay $3 or something to download or stream a match. Then again they want to get folks to sign up for Foxtel, which is now just bundled with Telstra anyway. It's probably cos Telstra is such a big AFL partner/sponsor now. It's all about money...

I think it's almost always a big matchup, regardless of their respective positions. I mean, it usually gets at least 75,000 at the MCG, how is that insignificant?

It seems that Carlton often seem to upset the Pies, like they did. I went to one Carlton Collingwood match, and there were over 80,000. The atmosphere was great. Hate both teams, but seeing the sledging between fans was great haha.

That it is, and competition in the fixed-line internet market is pretty cut-throat, Telstra would be looking to lock customers in to packages on their network, far more reliable income stream than selling the rights to individual games on a piecemeal basis.

Yep, that makes sense. Telstra customers also get AFL Live for free.

Yeah unless Freo or the Eagles play saturday arvo, then WA channel 7 viewers don't get jack shit Saturday arvo.

Gag on a dick channel 7

I was always disappointed when they failed to show some really interesting match-up that didn't involve either WA team. Only Friday night and some big Saturday night matches are shown in WA.

Saturday afternoon football is not shown in Melbourne at all regardless of who plays (and hasn't been for a few years now IIRC). With such a big football audience, it's bloody stupid.

It was up until last year, just on a 90-min delay. And then the VFL match of the day was played at some early time like 12:30pm just to accommodate the TV timeslot.

$even realised that no one really watches delayed sport anymore so they canned the AFL match entirely, let the VFL go back to playing games at a normal time and decided to broadcast them instead

Because the game we love is gradually being turned into a TV product - a pay TV product. The biggest symbol of the shift in focus was scheduling the West Coast/Bulldogs final for a Thursday night. Make it much harder for a set of supporters to attend for no other reason than slightly increased ratings due to the Thursday novelty factor.

FTA coverage is getting worse and worse.

In WA this weekend we only get 2 live FTA games, the West Coast v Bulldogs game tonight and the Essendon v Geelong game tomorrow night.

Not only is there no live FTA game on Saturday afternoon, there is no live FTA game on Sunday either, we just get the Richmond v Freo game delayed.

We used to get at least 3 or 4 FTA games live here.

The AFL will shoot itself in the foot if it keeps cutting back on live FTA coverage, a lot of people don't have Foxtel where they can watch every game live.

The real winners of the record broadcast deal are the fans.
Our game is about you- the fans.
