Why the hell do two channels broadcast the same game in S.A and W.A?

Okay, this has been happening all year. I like teams outside S.A, but i don't get to watch them sometimes because both Free to air TV and Fox Sports do the Crows and Port Adelaide games and no-one does the other games. I read in the paper that someone from W.A complained that the same thing happens with West Coast and Fremantle. This is pathetic, and it has to stop. Who agrees?

I get over to Perth a bit and yes it happens there quite regularly. Amazing in this day and age that the game channel 7 or 10 are telecasting couldn't be put on Fox Sport if FTA is showing the Fox game in SA or WA. IF NSW and QLD get the Friday night game on channel 518, why don't they do that instead of having the ludicrous situation of having the same game on 2 channels simulataneously, one would think it only logical.

Two weeks ago when i was in Perth, they had Kangaroos v WCE on both FTA and Fox at the same time. The Carlton v Lions game, on at the same time was not replayed until 0830am on the Sunday, f***ing crazy. They didn't even have the decency to reply it on Fox straight after the Eagles game, instead replaying the Hawks v Port game that was live on Fox, some 7 hours earlier. When will they get their shit together?

End Rant:mad:

It happens because the AFL has an agreement with the non Victorian teams which means they get ALL their games shown on free to air TV. Unfortunately FOXTEL which always gets the "best of the rest" pick of the games after free to air have decided have stitched up all the Crows/Power/Freo/Eagles games to make their packages more attractive to viewers in these states.

This means when Ch.10 or Ch.7 have got a Saturday or Sunday afternoon game that doesn't include one of these teams and they are playing somewhere else at the same time, the home team always wins and I get to see Port vs Freo instead of Collingwood vs someone else.

It's crap, and the non Victorian viewers have had it too good for too long. Not all Victorian supporters have the luxury of seeing their team play on FTV each week - forcing them to get FOXTEL.

It's quite simple. They are playing to the market. The majority of people in SA and WA want to see their local team play. So the televise accordingly with an agreement to get all local matches on free to air.

And because sometimes these are FOXTEL matches (actually more often than not) then FOXTEL and 10 or 7 will show the local match. Playing to the majority.

The ratings woudln't be too good if this wasn't the case.

If only they gave the same deal to Western Bulldogs, St Kilda and North Melbourne supporters etc.

then why did it only change when the rights went to 7? When Fox Footy was still around they used to switch games with the FTA channels on a local level so u didnt have this stupid double up.

I guess the only thing with the way it is now is that at least the Fox game is live into the market of choice, whilst the FTA game is often delayed by at least half an hour. Speaking of which, has that impacted crowds at all in WA, coz I am sure it has decreased crowds for both SA clubs

You can't watch them live there either. We've got Austar and can only watch the replay during the week.

Don't get me started on regional TV in South Australia - what you guys have to put up with is a crime. I stayed in Wilpena Pound for a couple of nights and Ch.9 I think was Impaja(?) TV which seemed to come from either QLD or NT. I was only 5 hours from Adelaide, yet kept being bombarded with ads for Katherine and Alice Springs.

Am I correct in that you don't get the Footy Show at all on Thursday night?

You can watch the footy show on Thursday but it starts at like 10pm. And what i said earlier even with Foxtel you can only watch the replay the next day. So it;s probably not worth it just for the replay.

i agree, here in NSW, no matter if sydney is on pay tv or not, free to air will show the game, just like on sunday, so we got swans/richmond on pay tv and free to air and miss out on the other games, it irritates alot of people because their assuming everyone in nsw follows swans, which we dont, i ____ing hate them..either have them on free to air or pay tv not both just to suit idiots who dont even follow the damn sport

yer its not foxtels fault its Channel 7 and 10
but living in sa if the put adelaide/port on 10 or 7 foxtel should put the other game on there channel

The whole thing is just bizarre at times.

Yesterday, Channel 7 showed both Foxtel games live into Adelaide but not their own game.

I can only assume it was because their game (Melb v St K) would have had to be cut short to get Power v Freo on live.

Also the Aker in a Melbourne studio / Aber and Dale Lewis in the Adelaide studio in every break (to avoid showing Fox's commentators) is rank.

That's what i think. The majority of South Australians are Crows and Port supporters and it's fine to show the Austar game on FTA TV. But they can have some common sense and show the other game on Austar. Therefore Austar/Foxtel is at fault.

But they do have the luxury of being able to go and watch their team LIVE at the ground 18 weeks out of 22, as opposed to 11 out of 22 for the non-Vic clubs.

If only they gave the same deal to Western Bulldogs, St Kilda and North Melbourne supporters etc.

If only the non-Vic clubs got the same amount of FTA exposure that the Vic clubs get, then this wouldn't be an issue. It's only a problem because the FTA channels continually reject the non-Vic games, forcing them onto Fox. They are getting the best of both worlds by showing the Victorian matches in Melbourne and the local matches in SA/WA.

Have you been asleep for 14 months? It happened all last year and will happen all this year and in 2009 and 2010 and 2011. There are 780,000,000 reasons why.

It also happens in NSW and Qld, with respect to swans and lions games clashing with another game.

Blame the federal government, of both political persuasions, for a) delaying cable tv into this country by over a decade, b) having an anti-siphoning list, c) having no rules and regulations on who has access to a pay TV providers cable or satellite platform, d) having no rules as to what is a reasonable access fee to these platforms and e) not ensuring there is enough competition in the pay tv and fta tv sports markets.

And blame Wayne Jackson for accepting $20mil of Ch 7's money in 1998 + or - a year and granting them 2 last rights of refusal options.
