I'd say a big portion of his support comes from name recognition alone, and that's it.

The reason they put Assange in the slammer for so long is no leaking info, or his dealings in the 2016 campaign, but because he so clearly articulated the way that forever war in its differing theatres (Afghanistan, Iraq, Ukraine) is simply a way of laundering money from US taxpayers into the pockets of the political and business elite.
