I really didn't want to start a thread though after reading an article on HFC today 'Fixing Fumbles Key to Hawks' I couldn't resist, were in a lot more trouble if that's all the club and players see wrong.

Whether the coaches or players want to admit it they have definitely lost the edge that made them so determined for success over the past few years. I know ppl are saying other teams have figured us out etc which might be true in part but the thing that's most glaring to me is the lack of ownership and total commitment that saw us win games when we had been out coached or outplayed or under resourced in seasons past. I also look at the language in the article and whether you agree or not it does appear a little defeatist. Whatever ever happened to never letting your guard down, would've been much more positive had Rioli been more critical on the team performance than talk about the opposition being hungrier. Put the blame squarely on the group, publicly shaming for what was so glaringly ordinary from so many. Everyone from the coaches down needs to give themselves an uppercut if they don't think the team has been beating themselves and not the opposition. And the glass half full luck bs has nothing to do with it either, you could write a book on the number of un Hawthorn like errors from last weeks game and from this season go on and write a series. By comparison to the last couple years you could barely fill a chapter we've been that good.

And for the record I don't blame Cyril for the loss he had been having one of his best games up to that point, we did this one to ourselves and now appear to think the opposition just wanted it more. This line of thinking didn't just come from last week either, it's been brewing after a number of defeats we've had with the familiar theme of could've, should've, stuffed it.

So here's the passage below where the white flag is waved and the fingers get pointed in the wrong direction.

http://www.hawthornfc.com.au/news/2015-05-26/fixing-fumbles-key-for-hawks

But he didn't think the Hawks had lost their hunger for success.

"I think other teams are just pretty hungry for that success. We're doing the best we can and teams are just a bit more hungry," he said.

"It's just the little things that are biting us in the end, missing goals and we're fumbling balls, and I think that's costing us.

"We feel we're giving effort and we're still halfway through the year so we want to finish off the year strong."

Admitting that the team thinks the opposition is more hungry should never have been printed and any thought of such coached right out of them with the reality of those losses. The team has to take the blame squarely head on themselves and tell everyone within the playing group that it's not good enough, and demand more from each other. It's a little flippant and casual when I would hope they be totally filthy with themselves. Don't waste words on the opposition, tell how everyone is pulling together and working harder on all areas of the game that's been dropping off. Clarkson needs to stop drinking tea thinking it will turn around and start getting tougher at selection by dropping players he doesn't want to and send a message that it's not good enough and everyone has to step up. He's a master and where lucky to have him I know, he's playing the long game but he's flirting ever so closely with the very things that got us into trouble in 09 & 10. He needs to watch the Collingwood prelim for 3 days straight back to back and maybe then we'll see some names called he's been holding out on.

The teams been putting up some pretty ordinary performances compared to 13/14 if you look at the number of skill errors, some of which by our best under no pressure at all, the reports and general hollywood stroke play it's pretty obvious they're not working hard enough or expecting the next person to do the bit they're holding back on. Can't help but feel partof them is looking backwards at the success and all the positive press, expecting it will come good on it's own. It's time the club puts out a total media ban, if not already in place, stop reading the press and be more disciplined in everything they do. Stop bombing in hope and bring back the patience and precision that has worked so well when the game tightens up and do the basics to absolute perfection which we all know they can.

If this season doesn't improve fast, these guys will have missed out on something more special than I think they realise themselves. Playing for the blokes who missed out is only part of it. Who could argue if they go on with it that they're not the greatest AFL team to have ever played? They would be the first AFL team to win 3 in a row with a team that was built from the ashes of merger, mediocrity recruited from the draft and slick player trades and then rebuilt again after losing so many key players after the glory of 08. And with respect to the Lions fans, what they did was still an amazing achievement in itself but but you can't hold these teams against each other and ignore all the concessions they had which included additional salary cap, extended player lists post merger and the cherry picking of Fitzroy players to Lions, some of which were traded for more pics. Amazing as they did (With an ex Hawthorn player coach), the team on paper wouldn't have been without all those concessions. I would feel the same if not more about GC or GWS if they go on to do the same.

I know we've all been very lucky to this point as supporters and I wouldn't begrudge them if they didn't go on again but at least go down swinging rather than losing the way that we have. Total ownership and commitment needs to start now and hopefully can build that formidable never say die ruthlessness we know they can bring.

And of course... Go Hawks!

lol I did ramble a bit last night after a few brews, just been fuming as we all have with the way we keep kicking ourselves in the teeth. I did read a couple articles on the age which picked me up a little. I was channeling something else last night, I was surrounded in brown and gold for a good 6 hours yesterday working in the man cave putting up some weg posters and team posters. I've got a pretty good spread of Hawks memorabilia, club authenticated player framed jumpers, and signatures throughout.... 19 years a member and collector it's a pretty good place to watch the games up in QLD.

It's pretty uninspiring though 79 views and no comments, at least the voting tells me 75% (that's 3 ppl btw) don't agree with me... I dare say that's about the same number who can stomach (and actually read) all that I wrote above.

I know better than to write this team off and they have it in them to turn it around, a more disciplined Hodge wanting to redeem himself to the group should go a long way towards that.

If any other punters are feeling game to post in this controversial topic put up your perspective on the season so far, how do you see the way things are after 8 rounds? What changes or things you want to see starting from next week.

Our Sydney and Essendon losses have been extremely unlucky. Port and GWS away, less so, but we were dominating general pay for the majority of those games. In my view, apart from fumbles/set shots, the other thing we need to fix is our slow starts. We need to be hungry for the ball from the start, just like we were in the North game.

Whatever the issue is, I trust the coaching staff to resolve it.

And one final thing: we are still doing better at this stage than we were in 2012. I still look forward to big things this year.

I think the problem is mental. The team hasn't lost its skills or ability since last year.
I reckon they all think it will just happen. Too many players aren't playing with the desperation they showed last year. I heard both Lewis and Rioli comment on the Swans loss and they did not seem to be hurting like many supporters on Big Footy. They seem to believe that it will all come good and they will automatically just start winning games without making significant changes in mindset.

In short, I think the Hawthorn players are 'drinking their own bathwater'.

I think it is all mental. A team just doesn't lose its skills and ability overnight.

All in the mind,
We have lost the killer instinct - the ability to put the foot on the throat and make the opposition surrender.
We should have won all games this year - we have lost the surgical precision we have had.
You can see it in Gunston and Bruest's goal-kicking.
We can get it back.
And it will help if we enter the occasional game with a plan to nullify the opposition (so Richmond have a plan for Port but we don't).
Who is out opposition scout?

Mentally not switched on. After poor games, obviously they copped a spray from clarko. Smash whoever the team was the week after. The week after that they think the job is done again, switched off again. And the cycle goes around. Predicting a perfect, ruthless win this week

Stratton said it best last week " we're not winning the close grinding games". We are so use to switching on and running away with comfortable wins that especially after the GF'14 , some of our players think it's just going to happen for them! The opposition are almost expecting to get belted at the stoppages and general play so, therefor, they play the counter-attack style against us. And for FfS, we don't run both ways as everyweek there seems to be oppo players in acres of space to do whatever he wants! I also didn't like CYRIL and Jordi responses. Opposition more hungrier? Bad starts and we in rd8? If we don't get our shit together, this could be the season of waste or predominantly be known as 'downhill skiers'

Slow starts + drop in disposal efficiency + drop in goalkicking accuracy = poor start to the year.

Skills aren't lost overnight, especially not when you are back to back premiers.

The problem is mental.

This thread is an obvious highlighting of issues the club faces, but unfortunately those in the inner sanctum won't change anything up until it's too late. I've seen it before and sadly footy clubs are notorious for not learning from their mistakes. Perhaps it's part mental, part adjusting to a slight tweaking of the game plan, but Clarko will be relentless in pushing the ideal they've been highlighting all preseason and won't wake up to any deficiencies until it's too late (see 2009/2010 for classic examples). I hate to say it, but this year could become a write-off, which you just shouldn't do when you're in your premiership window, but I can see Clarko apologising at the end of the year saying that he didn't realise he had to change things up a bit, just like in 2009/2010. Hopefully, if it's purely a mental issue, the players can sort it out themselves. Nobody should be hungrier for a win than us. Ever.

This aspect was probably the thing that surprised me the most about the article in the OP. It's natural for players to rest on their laurels a little bit, particularly with what they achieved last year; but to effectively come out and say that you don't care about winning as much as other teams is not acceptable in my opinion. Clarko should be making it clear to the players that if winning isn't your first, second and third priority, then you don't deserve a spot in the team.

These blokes have a chance to make history, it would be a shame for them to piss it away just because they don't think they have to work for it. Still time to turn it around; it will require a major attitude readjustment though IMO.

To quote people early 2012: "Is our coaching staff as good as it has been in years past? Has the loss of Hardwick hurt?"

Those pesky people !!

Regardless of this season, the B2B will still count as among the best moments in our proud club's history. Of course if they win this year it will be even more special, but don't downplay the past 2 years.
It was never intended to be a downplay, full credit and respect for what they have achieved which I pointed out near the end of the 1st post, though equally that shouldn't mean they have the year off and be excused for how great they've been. It certainly appears with all that's wrong we're lacking a little motivation and wondered at the end of my first post whether the coaching and playing group had contemplated what success would mean for them and their legacies should they go again.

The other reason for bringing this up was to gauge what everyone else thought about the season so far. It's not another player x did y bashing thread.... just an observation born from the frustration in the way we've been losing. Also seemed that too many people were getting too much slack based on past performances, others who looked to have played in search of form and worse still.... some of the younger performers who have stepped up had been missing out as a result. To be fair I'm yet to see any argument that would convince me otherwise, we've had a number of things go wrong this season that we haven't had in years past, and from my point of view (not everyone's I know) they're the kind of failures that for the most part are completely of our own doing and capability to not have allowed to happen in the first place.

The motivation to finally post on this, as my low post count would attest, was a case of straw and camels back with the game day issues being hard enough to stomach, hearing the soft responses from the coaches and players I couldn't keep quiet anymore. We're well into the season now, the excuses and finger pointing has to stop now. They can still turn it around if they start being more honest with themselves, everyone agrees to forget about the past for the next few months and focus on getting back those core principles which was our strength. It's not fumbles, it's the old basic accountability, total commitment and unrelenting dedication to the team we're currently lacking. Bring those back for the rest of the year and the glory and accolades would be immense and last a lifetime.

I want SOMETHING positive from the season. It might even just be seeing the new young players coming on. I think we all wanted both this year (flag and prospect of future flags) I certainly don't want neither!! If we finish the year with Anderson, Howe and Hartung looking the goods there might be years of good times at the Hawks which I'll enjoy. The frustration is that we have a list right now that can make a real fist of it

After some pretty forensic examination of games from this year and last year, plus the 2013 GF it is obvious that other teams have accelerated their development and intensity at the football to a point that it now matches that of the Hawks. We have always experienced lapses in games in the past however that intensity hasn't always been there to expose us. Our goal kicking efficiency has pretty much killed our competitive advantage, get that back and at least we might find some more games heading in our direction.

Just looking through the results of late last year this pattern isn't exactly exclusive to our 2015 season...

We let Port get the jump on us early in the PF (lucky they had to take difficult/rushed shots and missed) and also switched off late allowing them to get a run on. We then came out all guns blazing in the GF.

In round 23 we played a young, injury decimated Collingwood side who jumped us early, got the first couple goals and won the opening quarter to everyones surprise (and no it was not a nothing game because we still could've potentially finished 4th and played Sydney in the QF). The following week against Geelong in the QF we again conceded the first 2 goals but won the first quarter and didn't switch off late.

Going back further there is less of the week-to-week switched-off-then-on pattern but troubling signs all the same...

In round 22 against Geelong (the 'Mission Accomplished!' game) we were dominated in the 1st half (3.2 to 8.3) before kicking 11.8 to their 3.2 in the 2nd half.

In round 21 against Fremantle in WA we were switched on from the start kicking the opening 2 goals but were terribly wasteful in front of goal kicking 4.7 for the quarter. That wastefulness cost us in the end as we ended the game with more scoring shots but an inferior score (sound familiar?).

You then need to go back to round 16 to the game where North beat us at Etihad ('chokegate') where they managed to run away with the game in the 3rd quarter with 6 unanswered goals against us. Potentially this is the game teams this season are using as the blueprint to beating us. How to get us off our game and how to get a run on against us.

To quote people early 2012: "Is our coaching staff as good as it has been in years past? Has the loss of Hardwick hurt?"

And don't forget the parallel post whenever Hawthorn won in 2012: "Clarko has no idea, the assistant coaches get us through"!

I think Hawthorn supporters don't realise what a fantastic achievement 2014 was. We just should not have won. We had crippling injuries and had lost Franklin. You just can't do that every year, and it has already been challenging this year. Do you think we would have lost against GWS & Swans with Hodgey in the team?
I think back to 1990 when our champion team just scraped into the Finals after losing Dermie and Dunstall for most of the season. We got smashed in the first Final.

For those questioning the players and the coaches, you can be 100% assured that they're are doing everything to get us right. If we don't make it, it won't be because our club's not trying.
If we do, wowee!

Strap in and enjoy the ride!

You'd have to spend time in the inner sanctum of the club to really know, but the fumbles, poor goal kicking, poor starts, over possession, general inefficiency etc all wreak of a premiership satisfaction attitude.
Maybe as seasoned champions we can flick the switch on as September nears... I remember John Newcombe talking about struggling for motivation at Wimbledon in the latter parts of his career until he reached the 1/4 final stage, then he was all systems go.

Also just a side note ,we seem to excel as underdogs not topdogs...maybe the underdog perception gives us more determination, we weren't fancied as the favs for the GF in 08, 13, 14 but were in 12.

We were favs in 2013, there was just a late groundswell of support for Freo because of their manic pressure. I think it was more hope that they would get us more than a realistic assessment of them being better. I'm not one to look as odds as I don't bet but I would guess we were still reasonably comfortable favs even if all the 'experts' wanted to jump on the purple train.

Read an article this morning on the train regarding Freo where which ever player it was they were quoting was claiming that they are "still the hunters and not the hunted". I reckon most teams would prefer to feel like they're not expected to win by those outside the inner sanctum, with the clear distinction that they expect themselves to win. It's that mix of confidence in your own abilities without the weight/pressure of external expectations that is a winning combination. The thing Freo are probably going to realise soon is that when you're placed first on the ladder, several games clear of your challengers and undefeated, it doesn't matter how much you try to claim you're not the favourites that pressure is going to come anyway.

It's too ridiculously stupid to entertain as an actual possibility and in reality it would be totally arrogant if we were doing this but imagine if our 4 close losses were in fact "manufactured losses" like Sam Newman has been claiming on The Footy Show every second week this year. A clever ruse by Hawthorn to defy the odds of their situation and manage to fly under the radar in their quest for a 3rd consecutive flag.

The betting odds were certainly in our favour going into the game - but that would've been due to the sum of money that would've been coming in for us over the course of the entire season. The media hype and the slim majority of public opinion was that Fremantle's pressure would get us after we "fell over the line against Geelong" and Freo "convincingly defeated Sydney with relentless pressure like no one's ever seen before".

Hawthorn have probably been given less airtime in the lead up to the GF in the last 2 seasons combined than either Freo or Sydney did individually in those respective years.

I heard Derm talk about the 1990 season after the back to back 88-89 wins.
I remember us thrashing the eventual premier Collingwood at Waverley and thinking a 3-peat was a real chance.
Somehow the Hawks just couldn't get it together to win the flag in 1990.
They made amends in 1991 but Derm said he believes the team should have won 4 in a row and he still regrets the 1990 season.

I was at that game, so great to smash Collingwood.

And it should have been 6 in a row if you count 1987.
We had injuries in 1987 as well - Dunstall missed the Grand Final
