Was there ever a composite team of Woodville champions over their brief history ever put together? Not so much Team of the Century, but Team of the Late 1900's! If not, then lets make one, however I'd like to see the team if it were ever produced prior to the merger. I'm sure I could pick holes in it!

Could see much debate at whether both Brenton's, Coudraye's, Twelftree's & Richter's could be squeezed in. Would John Girardi knock off Blighty as Captain? Who would play FF - Blight, Roberts, Pierson, Hogavitch? Would Ken Deards manage to hold down the back pocket possy or would it be Greg Cox? Would Buff Tyrell play with one or both shoulders? JC would be a cert for the middle wouldn't he? What possy did Simmo play ?(before my time). Who at full back? With the number of hammerings we received they would have got a bit of practice!! I can recall only 2 household names at full back - Trevor Ettridge & Graham Linke ! Who would coach - Brehaut, McInnes or someone else? Where would "Needles" Winstanley fit into the team (maybe need extend the interchange to about 100!). Would it be the Peckers or the Warriors? Would Ernie or Singer be voted No 1 member (or maybe Peter Plus). Oh the debate will go on for months........ ;)

They say all great teams are based around the "franchise" player. This team would be no exception. Ralph Sewer on the (left) Forward Flank. The rest is secondary.

So it begins....

A friend of mine at uni, her dad was Lindsay Heaven, not a bad player. I think he played over 200 games i reckon?? He would slot in somewhere.

What til Mac sees this :D
Jimmy I have a feeling that Lindsay Heaven may have a back pocket spot with his name on it.
Also any arguements over Blight being the coach shouldn't be entered into!

Thanks Jimmy - "Pennies" is a cert for the BP - just don't tell Ken Deards!
Rooboy - Blight and Huppatz as "maybe's". Reckon Barry Ion's best chance lies with the mascot!

First ruck was always probably going to McKellar, Blight, Huppatz - altho I never ever got to see that combo in action. Colin MacVicar another chance at ruck. My personal choice would be Big Jimmy Brenton (McAlmanac knows I've always had a thing about JB!). I'll leave the 1R open until the other Pecker-philes come on board.

Not 100% with you on Blight as coach LL - Brehaut, McInnes, Goodingham have some claims on that spot too!!!

Note - a couple of other categories to fill as well.

From memory ( fading ) Bob Simmonson played in the centre. I think Tom Grlisich was a very good centre half back as well.

They did something like this in the 80's - about 1985 from memory. They ran a competition to pick it, I think.

McKellar Blight Huppatz - picks itself.

Eddie Holland would have claims to the back pocket spot.

Biggest dud recruit - have we got enough disk space? Ron Page, Robert Briedis (brother of Arnold), Ken Mansfield, Ray Boyanich (after being sorted out in a trial game by the Golden Elbow, Ray Hayes).

Best recruit - for performance (as opposed to how good a player he was), possibly Stephen Nichols. Was there a straighter kick for goal?

was tossing up between Boyanich and Stephen Parsons

McKellar now locked in. Heaven back to a "possible" thanks to Eddie Holland being brought to the selection table

Off the top of my head:

FF: K Harris, S Nichols, B Close
HF: J Cummins, A Taylor, R Sewer
C: P Maylin, R Simunsen, R Allen
HB: F Stemper, A Rogers, C McDonald
FB: L Heaven, M Parker, F Hansch

1R: C McKellar, M Blight, R Huppatz
2R: F Hansch, K Harris, B Close

Int: E Holland, N Teasdale, I Dettmann, B Tyrell

I'm sure I've forgotten someone.

Stephen Nichols has to be full-forward - kicked the ton twice in three years.

Some other names to consider...

Ron Fuller
Glynn Hewitt
Darryl Hewitt
Colin McDonald
Richard Champion
Daryl Panizza
Frank Stemper
Des O'Dwyer
Romano Negri
Steve Jacquier
Gary Haylock
Robert Lynch
Peter Schwarz
John Klug (career too short perhaps)

And here's an, um, alternative...

FF: R Briedis, M Doszna, T Sapwell
HF: P Harradine, W Carty, L Twelftree
C: G Edwards, R Fuller, B Winstanley
HB: R Boulden, R Boyanich, S Fowles
FB: K Deards, I Abraham, R Buckley

1R: J Coudraye, R Coudraye, K Mansfield
2R: R Buckley, R Briedis, T Sapwell

Int: D Boscence, T Pierson, D Koop, U Colasante

What a legend. Great personality at the club. Couldn't kick more than 35 metres but got plenty of them.

Do you know if he is related to the Panizza that played for South in the late 50's an early 60's?
He was a favourite to win the 1960 medal (along with Barrie Barbary) despite South's bad season. Unfortunately the umpires weren't as impressed (possibly due to South's bad season)and he finished equal eighth.

I started this thread as a bit of a joke, thinking it would take seconds. But there was actually some talent to choose from.
My 2 cents worth

FF:B Goodingham, S Nichols, D Christie
HF: R Sewer, M Parker, B Simunsen
C: P Maylin, J Cummins, R Allen
HB: F Stemper, R Champion, K Crane

Int: C MacVicar, A Rogers, R Fuller, B Tyrell, (J Brenton & B Winstanley)

Still no J Brenton????
L Callotto, T Ettridge, P Smith, J Girardi, G & D Hewitt would slot in well with this mob.

Is that Des Panizza? I don't know. Des Panizza was also a good squash player.

After witnessing his kicking first hand in the last quarter of 1988 I'd say no! His performance with kicking for goal that day was awesome (........bastard ;) )

My vote goes to Robert Muir.
Actually, Muir played some disciplined games for the Warriors. I was at Thebarton the day he went to jump the fence at the end of the match (even though I was at the other end of the ground) - a truly bizarre moment. I've never seen a group of people scatter so quickly.

The previous suggestion of Stephen Parsons wasn't bad. Explosive player, but very inconsistent and with a poor temperament.

Even though Blight is the obvious choice for coach, I think John McInnes would warrant serious consideration. The team that made the finals in 79 was built by him.

Another name that hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet - Bob Beecroft. Even in his twilight years, he was an imposing figure.

Ah yes, Gentleman John McInnes, an erudite component and educated man who ended Noel Teasdale's playing career. :)
I knew his last match was when he did knee ligaments against Norwood - didn't know it was McInnes who was involved. Looks like head trainer Ron Raymond attending to him.
