I don't think Smith has all that much upside.

In terms of limitations, he's small, and an outside player. He's not very creative, and pretty much kicks long down the line almost every time he gets it.
For an AFL footballer, he's very timid when the heat is on.

Upside is he's super fit, and an amazing runner. At this stage, probably due to very uncontested style he plays, he's very durable. I think he's only missed one game hasn't he?
He's young.

Right now, I'd say he's a handy player, that adds value as the 4th - 5th best mid. He gets little attention from the opposition as they are focussing on Bont, Macrae, Liberace, Dunkley, Treloar, Hunter etc.

The question is, how much better will he become?

He won't get bigger. He won't get faster. Very rare for a timid outside player to become a tough inside player. His poise will improve with experience, but this will coincide with the opposition putting more work into him.

When you looks at the real good mids, they all have a physical edge on their opponents - and they are can rip apart games by winning contests.

Is that something that Smith will ever be able to do? And therefore, will he ever be much more than Ok-good?

One thing is for certain, he'd have currency right now.

So should the Bulldogs sell high? Perhaps use the currency to get a ruckman in, and maybe a Luke Dunstan type cheapie to help Libba with the heavy lifting?

Bailey Smith for Luke Dunstan?

Am I reading this correctly?

Small, outside 3rd year players without much upside (your words) don't generally consistently stand up in finals like Smith did.

I'd kill to have him at Hawthorn but I wouldn't offer Ollie Hanrahan for Luke Dunstan.

No I wouldn't trade Bailey Smith. He has the power to burst away from stoppages like Petracca and Danger. Give him a few years.

If I were Bulldogs, I'd find an A-grade ruckman or KPD and use Dunkley as the trade-bait. He has decent value and I really don't think they need him.

Disagree. He has the pace to burst away from stoppages.

Not the power though. He's little.
Oh I didn't realise he was 185cm and 86kg. Probably because he is a giant compared to our midfield.

Even if he doesn't have the power, his pace complements their otherwise slow midfield. None of Macrae, Libba, Bont or Dunkley are quick. It's why I suggested trading Dunkley.

So Bailey Smith is worth a delisted type cheapie player?

Why dont the dogs just delist him and pick up a bigger VFL player?

Obviously don’t watch footy which is fine

No, his our best youngest (23<) starting midfielder and will be around with JUH, Darcy & Naughton. We do need a gun ruck and KPD though, so I'd trade 1 of our excess midfielders (e.g. anyone except Bont, Macrae & Baz, Libba would probably join them due to morale).

I'd' happily take Bailey Smith in a trade for Luke Dunstan but unfortunately I don't think the Bulldogs are that stupid.

After 3 seasons Christian Petracca had not shown anywhere near his potential.
Bailey Smith, 3 season in, is still only 20 years of age.
OP reckons a 20 year old doesn’t have much upside.
Give yourself an uppercut please.

Yes.

if there was a specific need and a player who filled the need was available.

he is a good player and will improve, but if you want quality, you need to offer quality.

And without stating the obvious - the Bulldogs have needs!

Would Gold Coast for example, consider a trade that involved Ben King and him?

Right now, that doesn't sound that absurd, judging by the responses in this thread.
But if Smith does have limitations that prevent his ceiling from ever being all that high - how good a deal would that be for the Dogs right now!!

They need a Ruckman desperately. They need help for Libba in the grunt/toughness department, and they need a key defender.

A small outside half forward/mid is something that they could sacrifice.

But Petracca was physically big.

He was unfit. He was over weight. He was off the pace in terms of his professionalism. He'd done an ACL too.

Smith is small. And he is already super fit, a great runner and professional. He's missed one game. There won't be much improvement.in any of those areas.

So where will it come from? And how steep will the curve actually be?

Don't get me wrong, he's not hopeless. But IMO, the current trade value could net the Bulldogs more than what Smith will offer in the future.

If Bailey Smith was on the market, I'd make the Dogs an offer they couldn't refuse.

Him & Walsh in the one team would be very difficult to contain.

To suggest he has no upside or question his contributions show that you don't watch games all that closely.

Give yourself an uppercut !!

You think he has limited upside yet think it’s plausible that King could be involved in a swap for him? This makes literally no sense.

The kid is 20. He hasn’t even peaked. He will develop physically even without picking up a weight (which he will do anyway). He will be one of the best midfielders when he was 23-25.

This is terribly narrow minded from you.
