The latest in a long and proud line of nepotistic appointments in the footy media. I try to emphasise the point to myself that there is no point getting frustrated over it because it’s always going to happen. But I can’t help myself here, is anyone else getting sick of his sudden omnipresence on every footy report on channel 9?

What grates on me is the way he chooses to speak, it’s the most infuriating thing I’ve ever heard. Honestly would love to know how much money was wasted on elocution lessons there.

"and we thank Xander McGuire for the story."

Yes but like you say, it's inevitable.
The worst is when Eddie says something like that, it happens often. Frustrating, but what can we do but laugh?

In fairness he is on a hiding to nothing. Whatever he does, he's going to be accused of being a nepotism baby and only getting the job cause if Eddie. Especially in Melbourne where his old man has an enormous public profile and pull in corporate circles.
I get that, I’m in a field that isn’t glamorous but pays well for what it is and if I had a kid I’d definitely give them a leg up to get in. The reaction was always going to happen here though, you just don’t see a kid basically straight out of uni shot up into such prominence immediately usually. I almost feel like they would’ve been doing him a favour if they eased him into it.

I don't really have an issue with someone getting their start due to nepotism. because I know I'd do the same if I was in a position to help kick start my child's career. It becomes an issue when that nepo baby is useless at the job and nothing is done about it.
I hear you, but as I said it’s just unusual to see someone launched to such a prominent spot almost immediately and we know why it’s happened. I know in Eddie’s day blokes like him and Quarters were prominent reporters at age 18-19, but nowadays it usually just doesn’t happen and it’s kind of jarring to see it. It’s not like he demonstrates some kind of star ability to have rocketed up like that.

Each to their own, but surely there are cushier jobs he could have slid into. Perhaps he genuinely likes being a reporter
I’m sure he does, but rocketing a 20 year old into the job is just taking the piss. They can’t argue that he’s exceptional or anything. They’ve set him up to be disliked. If he’d emerged into this role a bit down the track rather than now I probably wouldn’t be reacting like this.

His grates me everytime I hear his name after a report, so I'd say he has a disadvantage already as it's purely just cause he is a McGuire why he does irk me. Chip on the shoulder stuff.
Yeah I’m not gonna lie and say that’s not part of my issue. I really think they’ve done him a disservice in terms of his public image by rocketing him up so quietly. He really needs to speak more naturally too. That pompous voice he’s been taught does him no favours.

Agree with this, nepotism is everywhere, it's just the way of the world. More about who you know than what you know etc.

If the person knows what they're doing it's not a big deal but a bloke like Tom Browne becomes absolutely fair play after being terrible for a whole decade.

Agree with the other poster that it was dumb to put him into the spotlight so early in his career. Not a great look to be rubbing jobs for the boys in peoples faces.

He's an easy target to hate on I get it, but the kid has grown up his whole life around the AFL industry. He is better placed to do the job well than pretty much everyone who has just studied journalism at uni - and that is before Eddie pulls the strings he is able to. From every report I have seen him do on the news so far I can't fault him.

I can’t really fault him on how he has done (apart from the ridiculous elocution, sorry to harp on it), but there’s scores of other people there who could do the exact same thing and are doing the hard yakka. I don’t think he could’ve even completed his degree, unless I’m mistaken, he took up this role at 19.

he definitely got his dad's looks
