none of the 22 players deserves to be dropped. Just looking ahead
the flip side to that is there was a fair few who also deserved a game.

A new season 6 months on and for the majority they are all fighting for a place.Another preseason and you hope the young blokes in particular improve significantly as compared to what improvement the older blokes have in em.

Here’s the 22 I’d love to see start round 1

Houli Astbury Broad
Vlastuin grimes baker
Lambert Cotchin caddy
Rioli Lynch castagna
Bolton Riewoldt dusty
Nank Edwards Prestia

Bench Pickett CCJ Ross Stack

Love soldo but Nank showed why he’s still the number 1 in the granny. 17 touches in 58% game time.
Ccj is our most exciting prospect alongside Balta. He’s ready to play

Emergencies
Graham soldo Balta

2’s

Miller Garth mcintosh
Egg Balta short
Naish rcd turner
Dow biggy cumberland
Aarts chol Markov
Soldo Graham Higgins
English Martyn Hugo

Gonna struggle a bit in the twos I think this year but still exciting for the young guys! Rance leaving hurts our kpp depth a bit but hopefully can pick up someone handy. Best recruiters In the land

Updated my 22 to account for Rance. This is what I'd like to see round one, then I'll judge going forward.

B: Astbusry Grimes Broad
HB: Houli Vlaustin Stack
C: Lambert Prestia Cotchin
HF: Short Reiwoldt Bolton
F: Rioli Lynch Martin
R: Nankervis Edwards Graham

INT: Pickett Caddy Baker Soldo

EMG: Castagna Balta Ross Martyn
I wish there were more players on the field or bench so I could fit more people in.

Stack to Shorts spot at HB as even though he was great up forward I think we need him to replace Houli as an attacking defender once he retires.

Short to HF with the intention of being a link up the wing player, and an outside 50 attacker as I really rate his kicking and creativity. I think people on here severely under appreciate what he brings to the side. Especially when you hear the players and coaches talk , not about the players, but the role that Short/Houli and now Stack play. Being a lesser light in this side is a long way from being useless. I think occasionally swapping Short and Stack could provide some match up headaches for oppositions.

Castagna is very unlucky. Want him in there. Would probably take Riolis spot, but I can't bring myself to remove Rioli yet.

Nankervis is close to being overtaken I feel, probably by Soldo. When he is overtaken I'd chuck Nank as an emergency, Soldo as #1 ruck and Balta on the bench as second ruck, and for a bit of defense practice.

Pickett on interchange as I'd like to see more before going all in on him.

Graham stays in for his aggressive attack on the ball carrier.

Baker ahead of Ross as he is another player who I rate highly as an attacking defender and I reckon those types are close to our most important players.

Will Martyn close to breaking into the team. He will be the first 2020 rookie to play for us out of his group.

I'm just interested in what the tigers fans would like to see the line up look like come round 1 next year.

Let's say they trial it during the preseason and it all works, so feel free to put players where they might not normally be of you think it would work.

Mine would look like this:
View attachment 768560
Broad Grimes Garth
Egg Arseberry Stack
Balta Pickett Kmac
Short Chol Bolts
Rioli Cut-Lunch Georgie

CCJ Sheds Ross

Caddy Baker Turner Naish

Give some of the Seniors a later start to the Season by running with the above....

yeah i think its a hard argument to put together to drop any of those 21 - 22 until rance called it a day

i like Baker, would like to squeeze him in somehow

ditto Ross

I love KMAC. I’m still a little mystified why the big man was dropped . But hard to argue as the end result stood up .
I reckon KMAC will be busting his left one to get back in . And then he will stay in !!

Works incredibly hard defensively but his possession rate is low for a wingman and can butcher it at times.

Big year for him 2020 I’m not convinced he’ll get his spot back there’s some talent to come into the side when you consider from the GG side -Stack, Graham, Ross, were missing and RCD will be pushing for selection

I will have a crack at a 22 closer to the season, but just some thoughts on some players.

Higgins: Footy aside I just really hope he doesn't try to rush back. even if it means he misses half of 2020. But when he is right to go, I think he needs to be aiming for midfield time. that is where he did his best work.

Short: Would love to see him on a wing or half forward getting long balls inside 50. Just wheel and get it in long and quick. with JR, TL and DM up there it will cause headaches for opposition.

Stack: I liked him at HBF, he defends better than Short. Would like to see some midfield rotation minutes too.

Soldo: I still think he has strong claims as number 1 ruck. Getting first use of the ball and more importantly, negating oppo ruckmans tap influence is critical. Needs to keep working on his around the ground work as Nank is far superior in that area.

Cotchin: I think we will see Cotch play more of a Luke Hodge role, a bit of a general down back with spurts in the middle. I'm not sure how i feel about him in the backline but even by his own admission there is a young brigade of mids coming through who need to carry us forward.

CCJ: 2020 will be the year he gets a few games no doubt. 5-10 games I reckon. Could see him involved in a 3 way game rotation with Nank and Soldo to help manage workloads as we work into the season and hopefully finals.

Balta: Personally would love him on a wing but the clubs looks to have him down for a KPD spot. Either way I think we need to keep getting games into him somehow.

I'd like to see at some stage Jack tried on a wing and CCJ as a forward/ruck with one of Nank and Soldo. When Soldo/Nank need a spell, CCJ goes into the ruck and Jack moves forward, same when CCJ needs a rest.

Not sure if he's ready just yet but it would certainly help our balance playing a genuine KPF/ruck option rather than Soldo and Nank splitting TOG between them. Jack doesn't have the tank Richo had but I can still see him causung major headaches off a wing and pushing forward. His aerial work, smarts and delivery by foot would be a huge point of difference. Plus two 2m marking targets inside 50 will stretch any defense.

Still have a lot of talent running around in the twos, may not be as dominant at VFL level as we lost experience depth in Townsend, Butler, Weller Menadue. Hard to see how we won’t be better at AFL level than last year if we get a decent run with injuries. Exciting times!

see, now I did intend to put Edwards in but somehow forgot, he’s in that team, this has gotten too difficult what a team

What have they done wrong to lose their spots?
Thats like asking why would you bring Dustin Martin back in if he missed the g/f.

Its also saying those who played in the g/f are the best 22 and imo that is not true.

Playing in a g/f does not guarantee a game the next yr just ask the plethora of players that this has happened to over the yrs.

We dont have a best 22 we hopefully have at least a best 30 odd. On top of that we acknowledge the need to get games into younger blokes in areas we are light on FOR AND areas where players are going to go soon.

As stated before there are players who are automatic selections but there are also plenty who are rightly in a dog fight for a spot.
If this wasnt the case we would stagnate and end up near the foot of the ladder.

I have no doubt if players like Ross, Stack, Graham Balta and even RCD and CCJ have big preseasons they will be in the mix.
Personally id be tempted to play the lot of them.

Okay, i'll have a crack -

FB - Short Grimes Broad
HB - Vlaustin Astbury Houli
C: Caddy, Martin, Costagna
HF: Bolton, Jack, Edwards
FF: Stack Lynch Rioli
Rucks: Soldo, Prestia, Cotchin
Int: Lambert, Graham, Nankervis, Pickett.

That was actually a really hard exercise to do.

Amazing how people go to the likes of Dusty or Rance when asking if I wouldn't bring them back in it they had missed the GF like they are comparable to the likes of Short Baker Stack Ross types who I have as those in the mix for selection.

I posted this in another thread yesterday, but this is how I see the breakdown of the list:

Locks in the 22:
Astbury
Broad
Castagna
Cotchin
Edwards
Graham
Grimes
Houli
Lambert
Lynch
Martin
Prestia
Riewoldt
Vlaustin

Then fill the 22 with your pick from the following depending on form and opposition match up:
Baker
Balta
Bolton
Caddy
Chol
Garthwaite
Higgins(when cleared)
KMac
Nankervis
Pickett
Rioli
Ross
Short
Soldo
Stack

These guys are in order of who I want to see step up:
Coleman-Jones
RCD
DES
Naish
Markov
Turner
English
Aarts

No expectations on Cumberland Dow Martyn Nyoun Ralphsmith

As it is I agree with you that we don't have a best 22, but more a best 30 where anyone could slot into the 22 at any stage and we're not going to lose too much in terms of performance, unless of course we're missing up to half of the guys that are locks for the 22 like we did on occasions last year.

Having said that, the last side we put out on the park won the game by 15 goals in the biggest game of the year, so I don't see much need to wholesale changes as we sit here in the middle of January, 2 months before the season starts, with just Graham replacing Ellis at this stage. As per previous summers though my ideal 22 likely changes as intra club & Marsh series games are played and you actually get to see who is in form and who isn't.
