Is everyone in agreeance that we'll be rolling with 2 ruckmen?
I keep seeing best 22s on random social media pages and they all keep leaving out Nank or Soldo.

I just can't see it happening unless one of them is unavailable.

I think it will be situational. Wouldnt surprise me to see us roll with 1 ruckman at times.

Sammy Mitchell might be a bit of a stretch but Daniel is a perfect comparison.
I think baker is ahead of what Mitchell was at same stage in afl career. 25 games or however many Baker has played. Might be slightly too small to reach Mitchell’s heights tho...
Excuse the pun 🤣

I can see Shorty becoming the new Ellis tbh.

I'm probably as big a Baker fan as there is. Seems a very smart footballer. His size does worry me though. Was watching a few of the finals series matches again and the one thing i noticed is one on one in a marking contest he really struggles with strength and reach. Unfortunatly the one thing you cant teach / develop is size. Now obviously that's not his speciality but i just reckon hes going to be one of those periphery guys who are constantly in and out of the side due to form.

But that aside its the quality that is still to come in. We are in a fantastic position it really is hard to fathom after living through the 90's and 00's

I watched a couple of the finals games over the weekend. If they were the incidents that stuck in my mind though was he was somehow matched up with players 190+. My feeling was it was just a mixup because he should never have been one on one with those players in the 1st place. Having said that, he obviously doesn't have many players that are small enough for a one on one even contest. He fought back well against the deadlocked collapser.

Yeah thats the thing. 95% of his matchups are going to be on considerably taller types. Just needs to make up for it in other areas which hes done so far.

Very very tough to do with our current list, you would think it will change based on who has a strong and injury free preseason
I expect Ross will get the spot earlier in the season over Graham while he recovers from his shoulder reco, but Graham has more credits in the bank

FB Grimes Rance Broad
HB Houli Astbury Vlastuin
CE Lambert Graham Caddy
HF Edwards Lynch Martin
FF Castagna Riewoldt Rioli
RU Soldo Cotchin Prestia

INT Nankervis Pickett Stack Bolton
EMG Short Ross Baker
Depth McIntosh, Higgins, RCD, CCJ, Balta, Chol

Do people not remember how well Sydney Stack performed before getting injured...BOTH, at first down back, and then as a forward. He DOMINATED, and with NO preseason.

Only a couple have him in the starting 18, most on the bench. One person had him starting in the ressies FFS.

I believe he is completely over his injury now and will for the 1st time have a full preseason at an AFL club. What can we expect to see of Sydney Stack come round one. Obviously nothing is guaranteed, but I am flipping excited. The only question for me is, does he START as a back or a forward?

How are we looking down back... only the backman of the century to come in. So Stack forward for mind!!

I've opted to place Ross in my side over Graham because I feel he has more upside offensively but still am on the fence about it. Pickett's in my side but will depend on his preseason. Otherwise I like the idea of Naish or RCD having an opportunity in the midfield. I've excluded Short for Stack but not in a straight swap. Stack's disposal in the F50 is exquisite so I like the idea of him playing off the half forward line. Baker makes way for Rance with a schuffle of roles on the cards in the F50 as a result.

Probably my biggest call is including CCJ in preference to Nank. I think CCJ has more talent as a tap ruckman and certainly as a forward. He's better below his knees and a superior mark. The only think Nank has on him at this stage is size for the stoppage duels around the ground.

It really is a tough decision choosing a team. Inevitably there will be injuries which will open doors for VFL players but just based on ability at this stage - its a wonderfully difficult exercise and speaks volumes of the strength of our list going into 2020. All that and our new draftees haven't even entered the conversation and are unlikely to given the pecking order atm!

id like to see Stack in the midfield, his best/natural position is apparently "inside mid"

if you have him on the bench he can do this role in an impact style and cover his lack of fitness

the forward and backline are hard to break into

Martin? Riewoldt Lynch Rioli Bolton George Lambert? Edwards? etc.

Grimes. Vlastuin. Rance. Astbury. Houli. Broad.

even with a defensive minded winger there is Caddy, Graham, Pickett etc.

OK... he is a mid. Then he starts at the centre bounce R1 and takes his rest when needed. ;)

Id be surprised if Stack, Graham, Ross, and Rance are not in the best 22 for rnd 1. If not for injuries at the wrong time all 4 would probably have played in the g/f and there is no way Pickett will get dropped if he does all the work pre season.

Im actually looking for change because unlike most i dont see it as a bad thing but a good thing.

All premiership sides have had their fair share of ordinary players and we are no different. The obvious way to look for improvement is to find upgrades on those average players.
Theres also the very real need to continue to get games into players where the depth may be a bit light or players are entering the back end of their careers.

If everything goes real well as far as development goes then come the end of the 2020 season there is room for 6 - 8 changes. For me Stack Ross Rance Graham and Balta are obvious ones so theres 5 without even thinking about it.If CC-J can improve his ruck work then he comes into the team in front of one of the dinosaurs especially soldo who continues to offer very little outside of his ruck work.
RC-D Offers a real point of difference to most of the mids we have if he takes the neccerary steps there is no way in the world the club wont play him.

No one talks about the players who are vulnerable if we dont have 4 or 5 new regulars by season end id say we have stagnated !!!!!i dont think we can win the flag again with the same 22 that did it this yr. I dont want us to play the regulars for so long that when its all done and dusted in yrs to come we fall of a cliff and become a basket case again.
Smart continual change is the way to go its succession planning and its also called honesty acknowledging who we need to upgrade on.

Hmm FOUR sliding door moments Balta, RC-D, CC-J and Ross all demand a game round one this is how id see it going.

Bolton - Prestia - Pickett
Nankervis - Martin - Cotchin

Edwards - Riewoldt - Lambert
Castagna - Lynch - RC-D

CC-J - Stack - Graham - Ross.

VFL
McIntosh - Nyuon - Broad
DE-S - Garthwaite - Short

Turner - Baker - Naish
Soldo - Caddy - Higgins

Markov - Miller - Cumberland
Rioli - Chol - Aarts

Grimes Rance Short
Vlas Ashbury Stack
Naish Cotchin Edwards
Rioli Jack George
Bolton Lynch Lambert
Soldo Martin Prestia
Caddy, Nank, Houli, Picket

Broad is the one to lose his spot for Rance. Injury forced us to blood some talent this year, i hope we get the opportunity to take a more strategic approach this year. Bolton, Naish, Stack, Ross, Balta and CCJ all seem in my opinion to be our best chances at unearthing elite talent within from our youngsters. I hope all get 5+ games this year hopefully in succession.
