Game Day North intraclub blue vs pink 15/2/25 at 10am

Was quietly impressed by Cooper Harvey. Seem to have developed a bit of c*** about him and looks really competitive type, which is what you need as a annoying small forward. Much prefer that than if he went out quietly & without much noise, if this really is his do or die year.
coop was very good especially as the ball was rarely forward for his team
has that mongrel we need also

hopefully they upload the stream to youtube

I didnt get to see the entire match but a few things i noticed
1. All of them look bigger. I know adding in Parker, Daniel and Darling will do that but even Powell, Whilphil, Tucker etc were in amazing shape. In years gone by we looked like a team that would be knocked over by a strong breeze.
2. Skills were reasonable for what looked to be a pretty intense match. Plenty of full contact tackling and very few blokes not put body on. Whilst they overall weren't super silky that was probably to be expected for Feb, in what looked a fairly breezy slightly wet day.
3. Young guys that have taken the next step. PC, RHJ, McKercher and ive got to say Coomer. They were all really noticable from what i saw.
4. Zurhaar looks seriously fit and invested. Having Darling with him makes a huge difference. Massive tick there.
5. FOS was as advertised. Has serious wheels and excellent vision. New Urquart has huge potential too.
Overall a good showing for Feb. Cant wait to bring on the real stuff.

It was only an intraclub match, but I liked a lot of what I saw, we will obviously learn a lot more when we come up against the Dees (IIRC) in a couple of week's time.
The biggest positive for me was despite still being a very young team, it looks like there will be a lot of competition for places this season. A lot of our youngsters look fitter, stronger and the experience we brought in has helped their development and they look more comfortable with ball in hand and not making as many glaring and costly errors.
  • Goad is still slightly built, but he looks very good and has surprising speed. Could he play a game this season?
  • Whitlock also looks a little light, but his reading of the play and his skills below the knees already look elite. Another youngster who could play as early as this season.
  • Finnbar Maley looks almost unstoppable up forward, but he needs a lot of work with his kicking.
  • The battle for the remaining small and medium forward spots (after Zurhaar and Curtis) is going to be very interesting this season, RHJ, Harvey, Duursma, Ford and Konstany all looked very good and all offer something a little different. I think RHJ is probably slightly ahead at the moment with his speed ability to hit the scoreboard.
  • I'm not quite as confident about our stocks down back, I actually thought our best small and medium defenders (besides Daniel and Archer) were from our VFL team which was a little concerning.

Overall, it was a nice start to season, I got to see a lot of players I haven't seen previously and was impressed by a number of them, I got to see how our senior recruits fitted into the lineup, and I got an idea of how we are going to use some of elite talents like Sheezel, McKercher and FOS and how we want to play in 2025. Exciting time ahead, I hope.

The performances are hard to measure because it’s not the real thing. However, both Larkey and Bailey seem to have noticeably bulked up. That’s goodness - as the assholes at work say. Also, Zurhaar is looking lean and mean and more like a serious footballer - as in, he takes his football seriously. That’s a change for the better from him. Also, the fact the blues won in a canter is sort of a positive. Last year, the VFL guys got a lot closer - I think.

Dees game is in seven days.

He would be an absolute handful if he had the old man's speed.
Yep, he’s not slow either, but an extra foot of speed would do wonders. On the positive, I noticed that he’s really filled out (like Boomer did as his career progressed from debuting as basically jockey size recruit). Not sure if it’s body naturally maturing or he’s really hit the weightroom (or both), but Coop looks a really solidly built unit now for a smallish guy. Definitely not a twig by any means.

My thoughts:

Pros

• lots of good overlap running and repeat efforts. Seeing Caleb Daniel, McKercher, Scott, Hardeman hit a target and then follow that up for the handball receive was really good.
• Darling seems to help us hold our shape ahead of the ball.
• Powell has put in some serious work and it's paying dividends. He and Colby looked far quicker than anyone else on the ground today.
• Curtis gets involved and looks ready to break out. Lots of good pressure too.
• Zurhaar working well offensively.
• Whitlock doesn't give up
• Cooper Harvey was involved.
• FOS looks like he could play a role long before settling into his best position.

Cons:

• Zurhaar's defensive efforts were pretty bad. Had the choice to apply pressure a few times and just turned his back on the play.
• Our probables started off getting flipping pantsed by a third string line up. In the "catch up" scenario they literally just gave up the first clearance.
• Our kick out movement - genuinely the worst I've seen it in a long time from the start of the game right to the end.
• Few blokes out there taking the piss need a rocket.

Most pleasing thing was there didn’t appear to be any injuries.

Skill level overall was solid. Especially considering the windy conditions and intensity. Some dodgy handballs at team mates feet still annoyingly present.

As ive said previously, a noticeable lift in nastiness. Ford burying archer in a tackle. Push and shove between
Cooper and Chom. Good to see.

Still feel that 2 old and eternal issues are still present.

1: poor inside 50 connection. Still too many players trying to get out the back/not come at the footy. Paul Curtis the main culprit here.

2: big holes on defensive transition.

Players

Typical LDU pre season match in second gear.

Thought Powell and Phillips were best mids on the ground. Phillips increased running capacity is noticeable.

Sheez underrated game as usual. Killed it.

Kerch, top 3 on the ground. I’ve long been big on his outside game, but I saw him at a stoppage on the far side of ground in the last qrt, break tackles in a phone box and exit the stoppage.

FOS, extremely promising as to be expected.

Goad, honestly he’s ceiling is incredible. Love to know what flicked the switch in him. So competitive which was the opposite of what he showed last year.

X - please stop taking it out of the ruck. We have 100 top 5 mid picks. Just get the footy down to them and smash an oppo mid with a shepherd/tackle.

Whitlock - thought his marking was a weakness yet everything I’ve seen over the last 2 months show it as a strength. Expect him to debut this year.

Finnbar - yes he obviously needs to work on his kicking for goal. But remember he is 24.11 at vfl level. Very handy around the ground as well. Nice tackling.

Darling - not sure what people expect. We know he’s mast his prime but he makes our forward line better which was the whole point in getting him.

Dursma - surprisingly good given his late start and different position. But am
Concerned that yet again we have drafted a difference making forward and people are talking mid field.

RHJ & Konstanty - I get the need to increase pressure inside 50 but with darling over teakle and Simpkin down there more often, I don’t think these 2 warrant a spot over ford and Dursma.

Chom - despite some brain farts I thought he was great. Again, great in his attack/rebound/intercept. But with Logue and corr, maybe that’s ok.

Daniel - very good as expected

Zuhaar - obviously no concern, and in ripping Nick.

The Richmond posters reading the reports of FOS, Jagga, Langford getting bucketloads of it whilst Lalor has had 3 kicks in a month in their match sims.
Was a baffling pick when you consider they have Hopper and Taranto.

Sounds like having a crack at the club how TAF have we not already had someone seriously addressing Maley’s kicking ability and routine. It should look completely different but looks exactly the same. Weird.

The kids in the end just working the ball around with nice skills and kicking goals. Sign of things to come.
When they played well, we played well.

When the fitter, more experienced blokes got involved in 2024, it went to shit.
