Most Embarassing Drought Going into 2025 - Premiership (St Kilda, 1966), Finals Win (Essendon, 2004) or Finals Appearance (Gold Coast, Never)?

Again, what's this got to do with overall history of the league and its draughts? A 5 year finals draught is not even close to any overall league record, it's not even the longest current finals draught.

What's this got to do with the long time draughts that go back to a 12 side competition?
From 1972 to 1986, the VFL had 12 sides but only 5 finals spots.

The current system is 18 teams and 8 spots.

It's harder to win a grand final, let alone make one compared to 10 or 15 or 20 years ago

I'm surprised Fremantle isn't on the list, that would be so frustrating having 0 premierships in 30 years, but your cross town rival has 4 premiership. 2 of which West Coast got, after "Flagmantle" entered The AFL.

I'd probably say St Kilda has the most embarrassing history in possibly all of sport. 1 premiership by 1 point in 128 seasons is a joke. Not to mention Jason Blake should have won them a second premiership in the final 30 seconds of the 2010 GF, he literally soccers it to the opposition, when the ball was at his feet for him to quickly crumb and jam on his foot for a point to win it.

Fremantle would be my next pick, but The Western Bulldogs I would have put second if their draught wasn't less than a decade, since they've only had 2 premierships in 100 seasons.
What does the dockers have to do with this thread?

One premiership for their entire history which they secured by the smallest possible margin courtesy of a Barry Breen point thanks to a shite handball from Collingwood player Ted Potter.

The photos of their premiership captain Doc Baldock holding the cup has him wearing a Pies jumper.

The next closest they got to saluting was a draw in the 2010 GF but they got totally pantsed in the replay the week after.

When you add in some off-field scandals (dwarves, schoolgirls etc), they clearly are an embarrassment all round.

And yet, if we manage to jag one before the Blues, you guys then have the longest premiership drought.

Now THAT would be embarrassing.

Now that the lions have broken their premiership drought after 20 years, I hope st kilda, essendon and gold coast all break theirs.

2025 to be the year st kilda win the cup, essendon to win a final and gold coast to make a final?

Agree

Given 40% of teams each year make the finals and of those half win a final each year, the mathematical odds of not doing that in 20 years is staggering

I don’t even care. I’ve said before, I couldn’t really give a shit about meaningless elimination final wins.

The real drought is that we haven’t finished top 4 since 2001. It’s unbelievable stuff. Must be the only club to have not done that (aside from GC, who don’t really count).

Staggering failure.

Adelaide.. 1998
Blew it in 2005/06
shat the bed in 2017.

We should have at least 4 premierships. I worry that i will never see another one.

Come back to me when or if such a thing actually happens. We could still point to our 14 more flags in such a scenario as well!

You probably shouldn't have won in 97 (16 goals 1 behind in the second half is ridiculous) and North probably had you well and truly beaten at 1/2 time in 98 but had kicked 6 goals 15.

Amazing how important kicking for goal is. Went Adelaide's way 2 years straight. Not taking anything away from 2 amazing performances but 2 from 4 seems pretty fair to me. I know you probably won't agree.

The prelim in 97 dogs went 0.6 in the last ten minutes with a 28 point lead. Should have been a drought breaker match up grand final if we didn’t choke in front of goal

Freo were only ever bought in to stop WC dominance. They won 2 flags in their first 7 years and 2 in the last 30 since (1 of those was extremely dodgy due to player lifestyles).
If nullifying West Coast is the only thing you seek from your footy club then I'm glad you've reached the pinnacle of happiness.
