Clay Smith (VIC – Mid/Fwd)
Height: 180cm, Weight: 78kg, DOB: 11/05/1993
Recruited from: Gippsland Power
Style: Kieran Jack
Player comparison: Mitch Banner
Range: 20-60
Profile: Hard inside player. Loves the contested footy. Real competitor. Great endurance. Great accumulator. Really solid clearance player. Midfielder who can play forward and get among the goals. Has the strength to break through tackles and can stand up in them. Really attacks the ball at pace. Always shows great tackling effort and tackles hard. Strong overhead mark for someone his size and marks at the highest point. Left footer, but wouldn’t describe his kicking as a feature of his game which is the main thing that will likely see him slide down the order a little.
Why:
Andrew Boseley (VIC - KPD)
Height: 194cm, Weight: 80kg, DOB: 04/09/1992
Recruited from: Geelong Falcons
Style: Matthew Scarlett/ Sam Fisher
Player comparison:
Range: 20-50
Profile: Athletic type full back. Still skinny. Lots of development left though. Looks allot like Dustin Fletcher with his skinny build and long arms. Has had some really promising games down back and has become a really good rebounder from defence with his ability to mark off opposition kicks because he reads it so well in the air. Skills need work and probably needs to clean up to maximise his game and become a better attacking defender – which stylistically he very much is.
Sam Kerridge (VIC - Mid)
Height: 188cm, Weight: 84kg, DOB: 26/04/1993
Recruited from: Bendigo Pioneers
Style: Chris Judd
Player comparison:
Range: 20-rookie
Profile: Really powerful midfielder. Racks up big numbers through the midfield. Has a nice burst of speed and was very unlucky not to get games for Vic Country. Always looks dangerous when he gets near it and gets big clearance numbers. Strong mark overhead. Really great size and can get among the goals. Has been very consistent throughout the year. Didn’t look out of place when he got games at VFL level for Bendigo.
Shane Nelson (WA - Mid)
Height: 178cm, Weight: 70kg, DOB: 11/05/1993
Recruited from: West Perth Football Club
Style: Leigh Montagna
Player comparison:
Range: 15-45
Profile: Big time midfield ball winner. Has standout endurance. Speed very good. Wins the hard ball on the inside but also has an impact running on the outside. Has a solid skill level and links up well finding targets by foot consistently. Marking overhead strong for size. Doesn’t really have the standout qualities of some of those I have a little higher, but very good all rounder.
- Daniel Markworth (VIC – Mid/Fwd)
Height: 189cm, Weight: 78kg, DOB: 03/04/1992
Recruited from: Calder Cannons
Style:
Player comparison: Nat Fyfe
Range: 10-35
Profile: Overager with nice positional flexibility. High character. Very intelligent kid. Comes from a tennis and basketball background. Has played as leadup forward as well as a midfielder and brings really nice versatility. Very high level athlete with a super burst of speed. Not bad by foot and has a good 55m kick on him. Good ball user by both hand and foot. New to AFL but showing some big progress! Looks very draftable. Still learning the game. Project. But has made big progress in a very short space of time! Just keeps getting better with every game he plays and there seems to be allot of upside!
Marley Williams (WA – Mid/Fwd)
Height: 181cm, Weight: 85kg, DOB: 22/07/1993
Recruited from: Claremont Football Club
Style: Paul Chapman
Player comparison: Alex Fasolo
Range: 30-rookie
Profile: Real angry ant. The thing that stands out with Williams is his super long kicking. Final game of the champs off one foot showed his penetration with a huge 55m bomb off one step for the goal. Looked routine. Has a really strong build and seems like that Alex Fasolo type where he could play in from season one. Has really nice speed for someone with such a solid build. Really like some of the hard bumps and team things he does off the ball. Enjoys chasing and harassing. Endurance needs some work but with time in the AFL system that will come. Can Paul Chapman style lose his temper and be undisciplined but hopefully that energy can be harnessed over his career and put to better use.
Why:
#33 Hawthorn – Josh Waldhuter (SA - Mid)
Height: 184cm, Weight: 83kg, DOB: 15/03/1993
Recruited from: Central District
Style: Patrick Dangerfield
Player comparison:
Range: 10-45
Profile: Has been good over the past two or three years at U18 level for SA. This year seemed to get overshadowed by the efforts of Grigg. Probably didn’t quite get the numbers I was hoping he would get but still is among the better midfielders in this year’s draft. Physically very mature and ready to play now. Strong tackler and gives those multiple efforts. Attack on the ball is absolute insanity and is really unrivalled in this regard. Has nice penetrating kick. Speed good also very good for an inside player. The criticism with Waldhuter is that he probably doesn’t get enough of it for my liking, but with greater inside minutes this should change. Also would like to see him improve by hand because sometimes he possibly isn’t as precise as I’d like.
