The Eagles always seem to get the good lawyers, whilst we end up with the ones with commercials on the telly at 3am in the morning.
iirc we've had david grace represent us a few times before

Good call to make Nick Martin the rising star. Daicos, Rachele, JHF etc will doubtless have other good games and receive their nominations, but this relative "no-name" may never again play a game so good. You can always seem them struggling to find decent nominations in the later rounds of the year.

(And I'm still angry they didn't nominate Brayshaw in the game he had his face cowardly rearranged - he was never playing again that season so could never receive a nomination. Yet he would have easily finished top 5.)

It's a great story too. One that the AFL should be promoting i.e. it's not all over if you don't get drafted at 18 or 19.

I feel like it gets worse every time I view it. If Rowell had been concussed he’d have been ruled out for a month.
Consistency at the tribunal?

head hits still damage the brain. AFL's in deep sh5t once the scientists/docs work out how to measure and assess CTE progression in a live brain, particularly if they are still choosing to be wishy washy about it with all that is now known. Then you have Lobb who did the exact move to avoid such a head knock/brain damage and you have Lloyd who chastises him for it on national TV. Suspect this is becoming a serious growth area of law. AFL better get their insurance policies in order and lawyers at the ready.

I am so angry with the willfull ignorance and disregard for player health and wellbeing.
It is shameful and shames all of us.
The AFL could and should lead on this.
And...it just doesnt make any sense.
Penalise the dangerous ACT and wipe it out!

This is interesting.

Can we use all those times that buddy elbowed players in the head if anyone gets cited? Can we use footage from the 90's to argue a case? Can see why the AFL are considering an appeal.

We're trying to move forward as a sport, protect the head more. I think the AFL should also appeal the decision on the hit o the gut behind play, pretty sure the offending player got off with a fine.

I don't know why this keeps being brought up as a comparison - Riewoldt marked the ball, Rioli got there late and cleaned up the guy marking the ball.

It would be like trying to excuse a late head-high hip and shoulder by comparing it to an incident where a player arrived first and took the ball cleanly.

No one says you can't contest a ground ball - you just can't get there late and clean the other guy up head high. And no one says you can't fly for marks - you just can't get there late and clean the other guy up head high.

Yep.

IMO its' a footballing action as the game has stood for the last however many years.

The problem is that with that kind of hit 90% of the time the player is fine, 10% they're 'just' concussed and 0.01% of the time you get Dan Venebles, the intent is really irrelevant to the outcome.

I still play village league and one of my favourite things is laying a solid hit but at least at the professional level the risk vs reward is going to hit a tipping point for the AFL sometime soon. It will probably diminish my enjoyment watching the game but I guess that's preferable to turning the occasional young man into a vegetable.

Lloyd is an idiot and it just shows some people just don’t know when to shut their mouths .
It is patently ridiculous that the injury outcome should predicate the penalty.
Bizarre , backward logic in this modern educated world .
Possibly an insight into who’s making these decisions.

All preseason they (AFL) talked tough about any contact to the head from a bump would be harshly dealt with. I guess the MRP and tribunal didn't think Rioli actually made contact with Rowells head.

MRP did even though they were lenient with the week. It was the dipshits at the tribunal that didn't.

Apparently both Rowell and the GC medical staff provided written evidence that there was no head high contact (warning, was told this by an eagle supporting relative, unverified)

Maybe they just felt that as Rowell was a ginger, that there was nothing to damage? Shame on them. Think we need a round for those misunderstood bloodnuts.

Love that song. Minchin is a genius and being a Freo supporter makes it even better.

1 week wasn't harshly treating what looked to me to be a bump to the head region of Rowells body, which was lucky not to have caused more serious injury to Rowell. The MRP imo went soft on it which was in total conflict with what the AFL promised would happen.

I think that has to be right. He couldn't have got off otherwise. If true, then I still think a free kick plus 1 week would've been fair, just for being careless and very reckless.
