Autopsy Round 5, 2022: Hawks skin the Cats

Our team overall was just so clean in the conditions.

From the kids in CMac who was just really clean and classy and composed, Ward who crashed bodies with the best and biggest, super composed and his class was really good in the guts. Duke was a wrecking ball and played superbly, he's very Petracca.

Worpel came on and had great intent, had some awesome moments but some iffy ones but you take the good with the bad and it's hard to come on when everyone else is already warm and you're not.

Titch in the guts unreal, his best of the year and was just freakish. Best i've seen him for a while.

Jaeger was alright and had some okay and good moments, but i need more from you skip.

Forward wow, Lewis was great, won plenty of the footy and got up the ground, was composed when he had it and his marking in a wet game was very good, kicked 3 and had another very good game.

Gunston was just pure class, Breust class and his intent and pressure was as good as i've seen for a while.

Moore is genuinely one of the premier smalls in the game, wins so much footy, endurance, class, game breaking ability, kicks goals, tackles. Does everything and more.
-
Down back everyone was good, DGB started slow but god he was good as the game went on, won some unreal one on ones.
Sicily was just the general down there, absolutely elite.
Frost was huge, intercepted well but defended well.
Scrimshaw was unreal, his composure is ****ing flabbergasting. His kicking even better.
Impey had a great game, so composed, tackled well and ran super hard, was good on the smalls.
Dimma aswell as Impey, both so underrated and Dimma even more so bloke is a brickwall and if they had a team of genuine small lockdown defenders included, he's a lock. He just does it week in week out no fuss.
CJ was quiet early but was great late in the game.
-
Probably forgot some people but just an all round great performance.
Kossie and Nash battled hard as rucks, Nash was good as a mid also.
Reeves was great till he got subbed off, his tap work is so good, will be missed but Lynch back so.

Good shit and onto Sydney.

Watching the replay, the Arms out 50 is exactly why fans hate umpires. They're shooting themselves in the foot by getting precious over stupid shit like this. When we need more umpires at all levels, why on earth would you introduce something to make them more disliked?!
The worst thing about it is its actually labelled "umpire respect" hahaha what a way to look like a joke of a sport

I remember Ling went through it for a while too. Now he's back fanboiing.
Yes, in 2015 he was talking the hawks up a treat at brownlow night. But last week against Brisbane, he was awful. Claimed the Porkins push in the back wasn't there. was utterly biased towards geelong.

A brave effort particularly after losing our sole specialist ruck. I love Worpel's endeavour but I hate it When he hacks it blindly forward when our forwards are outnumbered or all up field.

We should be getting some quality back this week with Day and Wingard. I wonder how far away Bramble is? I thought he was Round 6. Getting good ball users back will make us a far better team. Impey had a very good game. With CJ closely checked he helped us negotiate many tricky situations.

May be time to rest Ward or McDonald. They have had a solid block of games and know what is required at the highest level.

Scott in his presser made it sound like they dominated the game after the first 5 mins. Mate you had 1 more clearance and 3 more scoring shots which is probably attributed to Reeves not being there the last 3 qtrs. We had more possessions and won CP comfortably. Think he is in denial about the state of where his mob is at. They will play finals you would think but this team isn't winning a flag. Too much reliance on the top 5-6 players on their list. We shut down 2 of them today and look what happened.
This is a good thing, may he delude himself and his club forever.

Best win I've seen live since the 15GF! This was the old best players team effort, all 23 gave 100% for 120 minutes. So much to like, Newcombe ripping Selwood and Dangerfield a new one. I'm sick of hearing the media fawn over those two, give Jai some respect. MacDonald played his best game yet, he has speed, endurance and skill, and looks a steal for a 2nd rounder. Sicily played an unbelievable game, won't do his upcoming contract any harm. When Lewis kicked that last goal, the roof would have been lifted off the G... if there was one. That was more than a win, it was a statement

Wingard needs to show form at Box Hill before he returns, like Shiels and Phillips have done. We look better without him, particularly when he is not 100%. Make him earn his spot on form not reputation

By playing on, he made it a certainty. He made the right call
Goes back and misses that’s 30 seconds off the clock but gives them opportunity to go end to end and then score again from the centre, stealing the game.

Kicking the certain goal takes only a few seconds off the clock but forces them to kick at least 3 scoring shots (with 2 majors) to steal a win. A draw would suck but still better than a loss and very unlikely.

I think I'd give Bramble a week or 2 with Box Hill before coming straight into the team, just to get some match fitness into him

I don’t like booing a triple premiership Hawk.

Smith will not win shit at Geelong and in 10 years no one will remember he even went there.

Hawthorn are on a new and different path now and he is not part of it - his loss.

But he is a triple premiership Hawk and should be respected. Just my opinion.
I don't boo him, but he went to Geelong so he can f... off

Things we won today:
  • contested possession count
  • possession count
  • tied on centre clearances

Things we didn’t even get close to winning in any of the first 4 rounds:
- all of the above (more or less, and certainly never more than 1)

Change in game style to suit the conditions and opposition. And for the team to pull it off so well is a credit to both the players and coaching group.

Coming into this game it appeared we might be a little one-dimensional with fast, slingshot footy off halfback after intercepting possession. Now we’ve shown we can play otherwise as well, which makes planning for us a harder job.
