Opinion Our Current Rebuild Will Ultimately Fail - Prove Me Wrong

Interesting how a couple of weeks can change perspective dramatically. With a tough win against Port, a close loss agains Dons, and now a hard-fought win against the Tigers.

Which now raises an interesting question, “are we currently on track for a successful rebuild”? What factors would make it a definite “yes!”?
We've played bottom sides, beat a 0-5 Port after the siren and a fading Richmond, lets see how we go against the better opposition that will be thrown at us in the run from next week to the bye.

Tex is a factor now but probably won't be here for any march up the ladder, also no Sloane, but Berg is a massive surprise, can he continue?

I agree that we need to keep the lid on, but minimising the win over Richmond by calling them 'fading' is a bit much. They beat last year's grand finalists by 6 goals only a week ago.

The single biggest thing that’s happened since I wrote that OP is Rachele. He genuinely projects (not there yet obvs but showing the potential) as a player that you can build a premiership quality team around (like Bont or Dusty). Will he get to that level and can we keep him who knows.

He provides some hope as does the hope that Dawson could be a top 30 player in the comp and not just a very good HBF (ala Grant Birchall). That’s two guns - hopefully TT can be a third.

So I think we’ve moved the needle in the right direction but the weight of failure/uncertainty around a string of high draft picks still IMO makes the ultimate success of a premiership seem very distant.

Whilst we remain so dependent on a geriatric key forward it will continue to age tremendously

Tex isnt an issue right now. Looking around the league, Key Forwards are playing (and playing well) towards their mid 30s. By the time Tex retires players like Gollant, Rachelle, Thilthorpe will be taking on more responsibility

I see your point but we are choosing to waste Thilthorpe in the twos right now. We all know his potential. When Tex retires we will be well served. In fact it maybe better because we won't be Tex focused so leads of other forwards will be acknowledged.

Good grief it is hard to please people who flow this club. Have they forgotten what a basket case we were just two years ago?

When was the last time, we were headed twice in the last quarter and went on to win games.

The one thing this side does is it doesn’t give up. For a young developing side, you can’t want anything more than that. Yes, we will have some bad moments (ala Collingwood) but there will be more better than worse moments.

Exciting times I feel ahead and now I expect to win when I go to games.

The other positive is we will get better timeslots.

Completely agree. Yet I'm still worried about this GWS game. Expecting to win is sometimes worse....

It's a real question to be posed right now.

Have we actually done the work necessary, or are we trying to pull out too soon? Does the team have the degree of improvement in its current squad to become a premiership team?

We're still missing elite midfield quality. Are we taking ourselves out of the draft position to obtain it?

Don't get me wrong, this is fun and I'm enjoying it, but it's not clear that we're being smart.

I said it in the Nick's coach thread.

Sloane injury has improved our chances this rebuild isn't doomed just yet.

Still I'd like 1 more bottom 6 pick for an elite mid before we start going back up the ladder.

Yeah I still lean that way as well, I wouldn’t be upset if we fade to end the season and get into that 3-6 range of draft picks and pick up one more high class genuine midfielder.

Brilliantly said.

Well for starters we owe them for last year.

Based on yesterday side there would be 9 personnel changes that played last year but not this year - Seedsman, Mackay, Kelly, Macpherson, Schoenberg, Thilthorpe, Murray, Rowe and Fogarty.

Pretty sure this years side is significantly stronger than last year.

The first time for about three years that we'll go in with expectation on us

Interesting to see how we cope

I think we probably did when we played them last year as well at 3-1 and they smashed the hell out of us.

Weirdly, it was the exact same weekend (first weekend in May) at home.

Tex isn’t an issue, our reliance on him is.

He’s been incredible last season and this, but when he doesn’t fire neither do we.

Here’s a question is this weekend coming the last one in April or the first in May or both?
Sat 30th April, Sun 1st May

I agree that we are still missing a genuine A grade midfielder. I think the best thing for our rebuild long term, is to get 1 more top 5 draft pick and find ourselves that game changing gun midfielder that we have all been hoping for.
