Is that really anything of note? Just curious.
It’s of note to me. The staff list has always been a keyhole into what’s happening inside the Club. That is why, of course, they’ve removed it.

Got a lot of feedback about 'Jordan Hinkley - Football Analyst' I presume.
Just wondering if those that have a problem with Jordan Hinkley also have a problem with Erin Phillips sister Rachel working at the club? I don't - but if you're sensitve to any family members being employed by the club she should get the chop immediately shouldn't she? What about Kara Fantasia do you have a problem with her as well? Or is it solely Hinkleys that you have a problem with?

The Port Adelaide Football Club has always presented itself as a family club. I've always expected to see Eberts, Williams, Obsts, Burgoynes, Phillips etc etc around the club - that's one of the things I love about our club.

This is rubbish. Those families are synonymous with Port because they earned their positions on merit. Any Port supporter worth their salt would despise employment by nepotism.

I'm pretty sure I've asked this question before but it remains unanswered. What qualifications does Jordan Hinkley have to hold the position of Football Analyst? It's a fair question.

There's a clear difference between family members of players such as Phillips and Fantasia being employed in non football department roles at the club to family members of the senior coach being employed in football department roles.

He has it in his DNA

His qualifications are that he is the son of the senior coach. His sister and brother-in-law were employed on the same basis.

It was all part of the package to entice the Hinkleys from Gold Coast to sunny South Australia.

Other parts of the package were no interview panel and, once Leon Cameron turned us down in preference to GWS having been the chosen one by said panel, no other requirement for Hinkley to independently prove he himself was qualified for the job. Text messages from certain Geelong players were considered proof enough.

Looking back across ten years … it stinks to high heaven.

I’m happy for anyone who is qualified whatever their surname to get the job. If you’ve got a degree in sports management and you want to be an analyst that’s fine, if you have a background in finance and you work for the finance team also fine, if you’re in event management and you want to do game day experience totally cool.

If you’ve grown up in a footy environment and been surrounded by football your entire life I understand the drive and the passion to stay involved. This is nothing new, it happens everywhere. 🤷🏻‍♂️ I freaking hate it when I meet people who work at clubs and they don’t even barrack for the team. Port used to outsource their game day team, I remember chatting to the woman who walked you out on the ground for the coin toss first kick etc and she was an Essendon supporter - nup - I’d much prefer to get the insight of someone who was as passionate as I was.

I’ve got a couple of my kids jobs through my contacts, I worked for and with my parents in various stages of my career. Maybe it’s nepotism but it’s also the way the world works, you get jobs through people you know and you keep jobs by being good at what you do.

Just to clarify the staff list is still available.

Storm, teacup.

He used to help with training while he finished high school, then went into a role with the club. But as has been pointed out, football analyst probably means he just cuts video together.

Haha someone has read this from the club and dumped it as a news item dated December 3 2019.

Look at the URL. I have split it so you can see it rather than BF just automate the link.

At 11.54pm this is what that Administration link looks like. No Staff link there like normal. Why??

You don't remove a whole link and dump it under a news item. Begs the question, how accurate is this December 3 2019 10.21am news article link??

Great question. There has been at least one debate on nepotism here already. The one I remember was even on Jordan Hinkley.

Just to see how long this saga has been carrying on, that conversation happened on December 2018. It is at the Darren Cahill - New Board Member thread. HinkleysHeroes started it, RussellEbertHandball and I took it over defending opposite views, and Tibbs added his two cents.

Here, it is, in full:
He has a big ugly head like his father. Instant success incoming!

Book mark it.

Or call it horrible nepotism like they do down the road and yet we celebrate it here.

Nepotism is NOT hiring family members, but hiring people solely because they are family members. If you have someone qualified in the family, that's one more reason to bring the guy in.

Nepotism = Family Values. Ever heard anyone campaign against family values?

The key is you don't give a family member a job past their ability.

Peter's Principle notwithstanding, doing that would be Nepotism.

Nepotism is the distorted form of what you have called "Family Values."

Nope dictionary definition - Oxford - is that Nepotism is just favouring relatives and friends.

NEPOTISM | Meaning & Definition for UK English | Lexico.com
The practice among those with power or influence of favouring relatives or friends, especially by giving them jobs.

But that's precisely what I am saying. The issue here seems to be on the meaning of "favouring."

If the person is (or genuinely thought to be) qualified, could it be considered "favouring"? Nepotism happens when there is no justification for choosing relatives to a specific position.

No it doesn't. That's not what the dictionary definition is.

You have 2 equal candidates. You know one - the family member, you don't know the other. You favour the family member because you have seen their output. That is nepotism as defined by the dictionary and is also justified.

I think such an understanding makes it harder to distinguish actual cases of corruption from regular common-sensical choices. Forget the blood ties for a moment. Things being equal, why would you choose the person you don't know?

Nepotism has a strong negative sense. It cannot be used to describe understandable, reasonable, and justifiable choices. Either that, or my comprehension of the meaning of Nepotism is wrong.

I agree ... although the basic dictionary just makes a general statement of "favoring relatives," which can be looked at as being nebulous, the common attribute associated with nepotism is unfairness, even corruption, and being given without merit. Its origin with the Popes and clergy of Rome using it corruptly to both own property and to retain power in their families, is testament to this.

In Brazil, it is commonly associated with public offices. In private companies, it is not much used (it still might happen); and, in family business, never (because there can be no Nepotism in this case).

In brief, Nepotism would happen when managerial decisions are taken based on the family being more relevant than the institution, except when the institution belongs to the family.

I repeat my point. If the person in the position is qualified, then, calling it "nepotism" just because there's family or friendship ties is unfair.

In this case, I have no idea whether Jordan Hinkley is qualified. He may well be. People are questioning his hiring because they mistrust his father; which is fair. Do people want to talk about it again? If so, the reply to such a question doesn't need to go further than one on any other hiring.

Does Jordan have the minimum qualification to the position? Or, since he's been working for a while now, is he doing what would be minimally expected of someone in his position? If the answer is positive, then his hiring would be justified, and the accusation of nepotism would be proved false.

Yet, people could still question whether it was the best hiring. However, that's an entire new discussion. For starters, they would need to bring better alternatives to the table. From then, the conversation would go on.

The same applies to Rachel Phillips.

So if you’re a child of a Phillips you’ve earnt your position but if you’re the child of a Hinkley you haven’t. Got it.
That's one fine looking strawman you've made there, my dude.

Those family names have become synonymous with Port because the individuals have earnt or respect by their achievements and dedication. They have also been afforded little consideration in the pursuit of success.

Why are you ignoring my statement that any true Port supporter would hate nepotistic appointments regardless of surname?

Hey Expat Power, Just one more thing....

Nepotism is just a reality of any industry. What do people think the father son rule is in the AFL? 3 of our 42 man list are father sons and none of them were particularly sought after draft prospects. Collingwood had 5 father sons in their 22 last week. This is nepotism too. You can't tell me we didn't overlook a more deserving player to draft Trent Burgoyne or Taj Schofield.

The real difference is that Jordan Hinkley was clearly parachuted in minus any sort of qualification or experience for the role. Any of us are just as qualified to do the job and would be 0% chance of getting it.
