Wow. Exactly double the next two teams and more than 4 X the Gold Coast. "But it's the way they play"

I see they are advertising for people to become umpires on the AFL website, it should read:

Do you fit this description?

1. Do you have narcissistic tendencies and want to be the center of attention?
2. Have you always wanted to be a dictator?
3. Do you want to be able to make grown men cry?
4. Are you able to make decisions that seem completely irrational to yourself and others?
5. Can you look someone in the eye and tell them they're wrong when you know they're right and then punish them for saying so?

We have the perfect job for you, an AFL umpire!
You forgot are you able to apply common sense to the last decision of the game despite the rule book saying otherwise?
Does your family hate you?
Are you a virgin?
Do you have no physical ability at all?

Why do people automatically assume any minority was only appointed because of “wokeness” rather than competence?
i agree in one aspect... but, let's say hypothetically the AFL made it so we had equal representation in umps but the signup rate for umpires was 80 - 20 male being the majority. It would be right to 'automatically" assume wokeness resulted from the other 30% of female umps being hired. I fully support a fair go and if the numbers were closer to 50 -50 then most people wouldn't have a problem. It's the fact that PC culture supersedes the best for the job.

The whole gender argument is simply a deflection from the AFL not wanting to pay proper wages for elite sports and invest in the grassroots for officiating. The AFL is being disingenuous like most money first organisations hiding behind social justice movements.

So the only way the umpires knew he was staging was because he made those comments? They couldn't tell for themselves in those first 24 games? They had no idea he was playing for free kicks? Just another stat showing how hopeless they are.

they will apologise now like they did with minnivan

How long until the AFL add interest rate rises to the list of excuses for low crowd numbers?

The list will be endless yet the rule changes / umpires won't be there.

Umm, about until Benny Gale gets in, and then 6 months later.

I've been thinking about this for a while now, after getting really frustrated at the lack of free kicks coming our way in comparison to those conceded to our opposition, week after week. I reckon we're being a bit poorly coached in one respect now - I think Dimma and the other coaches are missing a trick here.

Perhaps we need to respond to being tackled differently? For so long we've tried to stand up in tackles and free arms, or just win the little battle of strength in a contest. But maybe we need to start falling forward when tackled, like so many oppo's do, and win easy "in the back" free kicks.

After all, a cheap free is as good as the best speccy or greatest run-down tackle anyone can do. I don't mean going full Weightman or Ginnivan or any of those pissweak campaigners. Definitely no flopping or outright diving, but just milking a few soft ones along the way to even the ledger a bit. Otherwise we're missing the boat.

For years we didn't need to do it - our strength and pressure in contests more than compensated for opposition soft frees, but now we're not afforded that luxury. We could really use another string to our bow to get some soft shots at goals, or even some cheap centre clearances.

Something in that I reckon.
Our players always try to dispose of the ball, keep it moving forward at all costs. Occasionally results in a spillage/incorrect disposal Free kick against. Other sides tend to hold it in for the stoppage or try the fall forward trick to milk one.

I think the problem is guys not pulling each other up.

Derm is famous for saying he tried it once in one of his first games and was told you don't want to be known as a gutless campaigner. Times may have changed, but players can still pull each other up, just like Dusty did to Danger after he flopped for a free late in the 2nd during the 19 Prelim I think it was.

Coaches calling it a skill is also not helping
