Stringer, Redman and Guelfi in for Waterman, Smith and Wanganeen.

Probably would have preferred for Wanganeen to stay in but hopefully he is the sub.

Good talent upgrade though.

Last game's sub: B.Ham (unused)

Out:
L.Stocker (omitted), M.Cottrell (omitted), J.Motlop (omitted), P.Dow (omitted), J.Weitering (AC joint), J.Carroll (Medi-Sub)

Love Durham named on a forward flank. Defends like a madman and has shown he can take a grab.

Not so keen on Heppell named on a wing, but that's old ground now so I'll leave it alone.

Would have liked to see some persistence with Wanganeen.

Are Carlton close to full strength? I can see Weitering, Williams and Pittonet missing from their best team. I don't know if Mitch McGovern is considered best 22 these days. I guess McDonald could be considered "best 22" from a structural perspective.

Makes the win even better.

Ed Curnow and Cunningham aren't really best 22. Alex Mirkov and Luke Parks clearly aren't best 22.

Kennedy, McKay and Marchbank are in the side. It leaves McDonald, McGovern, Pittonet, Weitering and Williams. The last 3 are clear best 22. I'd say only one of McGovern or McDonald if any would be playing with Marchbank back (though I don't know who would come out of the side for them to fit in). The named side is pretty close to full strength.

Marchbank is our 39th player used this year.

We're going in extremely underdone and understrength...whereas bombers are pretty much full strength.

Should make for a very close contest given our massive handicap.

Jog along. We’ve played as one of the youngest and most inexperienced side nearly every round this year.

Are you serious? Blues are close to full strength so you can't use that as an excuse. Carlton should win this game given the named sides. If you don't, then that's an issue for your season.

For Carlton it’s not about winning, it’s about stopping their rivals from winning. Think of Chris Grant. There was no need for Ian Collins to stick his nose in.

At the tennis, the people who clap double faults barrack for Carlton. “That’s business,” they say. Carlton supporters talk more about beating Essendon in 1999 than they do about their own achievements.

Carlton’s greatest achievement so far this century is beating Richmond in the Elimination Final in 2013. They only got there because AFL Supremo Mike Fitzpatrick expelled the Mighty Bombers and replaced them with his old team. I count that final as an Essendon victory because Carlton was our proxy. Too bad they couldn’t go on with it.

The day after their president John Elliot got off his $66M fraud charge on a legal technicality he walked out on the ground at Princes Park in his best suit before the bounce against Footscray and raised both arms in victory. The crowd went wild with delight.

It was a sight to behold. You had to admire their blind loyalty. Their man had stuck it to the man. They loved him for it. He was a blue-blood in touch with the common man who was extremely generous with player payments. And for that the AFL persecuted him. The AFL went so far as banning him from smoking at the footy in his own box. They stationed a bloke in a blue coat to peer through the keyhole to check if he was lighting up.

I hate Carlton but I love the contest they provide. Sometimes we are the thumb and they are the thumbscrew, and sometimes it’s the other way around.

Prediction:
Carlton are starting to fancy themselves again. Their supporters know the time is right for another historic Essendon victory. One thing is for certain: whoever wins — we will hate each other more. Football will be the winner.

No doubt about it, this is our crescendo game for 2022. Anything less than all guns blazing will be a big disappointment.

Line in the sand game, show nothing and heads should roll.

pretty funny. Usually oppo supporters try to troll you with the old "this is their grand final hurr durr" line. But, this time, this actually is our grand final! :drunk:

Still, if nothing else it will keep 'em in a state of high anxiety. Right up until at least halfway through the first quarter anyway
